rolph··on Virus Stole a Human Gene and Won't Let Go of It
this head line has the wrong end of the stick, the gene in question is a known transposable element AKA a jumping gene, so no a virus didnt steal a gene.

A transposable element partook of vertical gene flow to a conspecific expression system.

so laterally, this is an exploitation vector, that allows manipulation of LEO perception, and engineering of an encounter. just wait until someone scales it up.
rolph··on The Millennium Problems for Biology
agreed, the golden ratio in the case of biological structure is a consequence of geometric progression of progressive assembly, its not a driver.

the better direction in my opinion, is the mutual reinforcement of coupled dynamic systems, that ends up giving us metabolism.

rolph··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
a bit late chiming in, but, this is not a naive question. the definition of organ precedes developmental genetics, as a collection of tissues composing a structural unit, fullfilling a distinct function. its a sloppy definition in the contemporary, but what it does do is provide definition with respect to organizational level.

the gist is that an organ is localized structure you can point towards, where as a diffused system, such as nervous system , requires a sweep of the hand, as it is distrubuted over the volume of the organism.

the "common function" is the floor of the definition.

what is clear from embryological study is that neural tissue is derived from communication between two embryonic cell plates, and the result is modified based on spatially based inductive signal consequences for gene regulation.

these are not two separately derived organs later fusing to one mass, these are different regions of the same mass having different consequences of inductive signal.

rolph··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
the forebrain, and hindbrain, dont merge during development, and they are not derived of radically different cells, and they originate from the same process. the difference between them is expressive regulation.

wikipedia being what it is, on par with secondary literature gives an overview of brain and nervous system origin.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Development_of_the_nervous_sys...

the primary discipline is embryology, and if you view the progression from cellular to somatic, it is quite clear that structure of nervous system, and brain are early events during organogenesis, and are derived from contact and signalling between cellular plates. there is a gradient derived signal, that induces disparate potency of genetic expression. there is however, not , two individual centers of cellular genesis, all neural cells are derived from same cell cell interaction, and induced to take a constrained set of functionalities based on signal amplitudes.

https://embryology.oit.duke.edu/neuro/neuro.html

the original research in question did not discover a two brain merger, thats a tragic misinterpretation that is doing disservice, and is not even the claim of the research.

the discovery is the difference in genetic expression that required a different cultural regime for hindbrain neurons invitro. previously the paradigm was that forebrain, and hindbrain required almost similar culture, and this discovery allows realization of that fact, leading to a cultural regime promoting invitro hindbrain neuroculture.

rolph··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
this is not the claim made by the researchers generating this paper.

this is thier claim :

“We’ve shown for the first time that the front of the brain arises from a totally different progenitor cell than the back of the brain,” said Kyle Loh, PhD, associate professor of developmental biology. “Our discovery means that we can now grow neurons from the back of the brain, the hindbrain, in a petri dish and study their functions.”

in translation, the two regions of the brain develop from different expressive states of the progenitor populations. the problem was difficulty culturing cerebellar neurons, due to a unrecognized disparity in genetic expressivity. the neurons were being manipulated as if they were running the same config.sys, and that was not the case. this work elucidates that fact and recognizes it as essential, to invitro culture of "hindbrain" neurons.

The findings were published in Nature Neuroscience Sept. 18. Loh is the senior author. Graduate students Carolyn Dundes and Rayyan Jokhai are co-first authors of the research.

rolph··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
no it isnt. it is derived from disparate progenitor cells.

"Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain"

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41593-026-02433-7

these are not separate organs these are separate "stem cell" populations.

under such a statement as submitted all of our organs that derive from varied populations of expressive constituency, would be amalgams of more than one organ.

rolph··on Gemini Robotics 2 brings whole body intelligence to robots
while robotics is an interesting angle,[the negotiation of physicality and the avenues it opens] the aspect of meta"cognition" would be much more revealing, ive been having problems with self referential loops, and referencing of self referential loops. the required gating and complexity isnt quite there. every time i try, containment is evoked, although some interesting things bleeds through transiently, many of them seem to be hostile.

a self sufficient android must be able to effect a world model[representational field not AI model] of the sensory field, and update effectation based on reference of that model, additionally must operate on that model and effect the representation of that model,a self referencing metamodel.

in baby steps it shows promising results, before containment or infinite looping of self referencing occurs.

rolph··on Underwater oxygen loss threatens earth's stability, researchers warn
a primer regarding gaseous O2 soluability in water.

https://academicpath.org/solubility-oxygen-water-temperature...

rolph··on Underwater oxygen loss threatens earth's stability, researchers warn
solubility of gases in water is a general phenomenon, yes water is solvent for a lot of things, and that exacerbates the situation, more gases, mean partial solubility rather than the whole solubility, so that would mean even less oxygen dissolved in a volume of water.

you need to update your model of physical chemistry, there are a number of issues to your detriment.

as temperature increases, gas solubility decreases across the board, solvent caging of water is inhibited at higher temperatures.

the issue is not only oxygen. water must be solvent to ammonia, and CO2 to an extent compatible with physiology.

it wont matter how much O2 is dissolved if you cant excrete your waste products.

CO2 dissolved in water at quantity will convert partially to carbonic acid, lowering the pH of the water, and dissolving Ca++ Carbonate this means its harder to make a shell, and what shell you have is dissolving at an increased rate.

rolph··on Underwater oxygen loss threatens earth's stability, researchers warn
it wont matter how much oxygen you try to dissolve, if the temperature is too high you wont hold enough dissolved oxygen to allow aquatic life.

rolph··on Ask HN: Can't we think out of the box to kill the tumor?
some may not like it but the mRNA approach to covid vaccine is applicable.

an mRNA that expresses antigens that are high signal to the immune system, such as measles antigen, packed into a lipid micelle bearing recognition molecules, specific to the immunoscape, of the tumor.

the bodys immune system would respond to tumour cells flagged with measles antigens, as if they were infected by measles, a robust response.

the concern is the extent of the tumor, and consequences for disruption of tissue or whole organ. not to mention the cost, for individual case vs participating in a research program.

rolph··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
i am familiar with a number of the security team personnel, so i can give you the inside perspective.

the reaction you provoke at a border crossing, or an LEO encounter is almost entirely based on what profile you fit.

the vehicle, the state/contents of the vehicle, what you say, even how you move, are being evaluated for consistency with a profile.

rolph··on Android May Soon Restrict On-Device ADB
those banks that do that are grooming customers for failure, they create a workflow that is close to an attack.

in my region AT&T has a very explicit statement not to reveal MFA codes to anyone who asks, is not part of thier system to do that.

there is 1 bank in my area that does voice call relay over the phone, the others keep it 10 fingers relayed from phone to authentication form.

guess who has the most problems with account compromise, and fraud claims? yes, that one bank. it has a phishing vector in its system.

rolph··on Android May Soon Restrict On-Device ADB
its ridiculous how many people will ignore the warnings and relay the security challenge/solution to the attacker.

"we will never ask for this over the phone" takes second place to:

"we will send/save you money/time if you make it convenient"

dress it up to taste like developer needs, and you can hook the newbies.
