You're going to have to qualify that.

That's a class move and you are probably a cool person to work with.

It's not a failure if you make plastic bags or you're a retailer.

Do they charge you for a bag in Chicago?

>Estimates indicate that, for adults, the association between cigarette taxes and either smoking participation or smoking intensity is negative, small and not usually statistically significant. Our evidence suggests that increases in cigarette taxes are associated with small decreases in cigarette consumption and that it will take sizable tax increases, on the order of 100%, to decrease adult smoking by as much as 5%.

roghummal··on Marathon Editing Brings New Rigor to Wikipedia Physics
>For example Feynman couldn't explain to a layman how magnets work, but explained why not:

And it's possibly his failure, not some intrinsic property of MAGNETS WORKING that's impossible to explain to laymen. In his own words,

"I can't explain that attraction in terms of anything else that's familiar to you."

"... because I don't understand it in terms of anything else that you're familiar with."

roghummal··on Marathon Editing Brings New Rigor to Wikipedia Physics
In my experience (outside Wikipedia) it's easier to shoot something down than it is to fix it. There's a proxy effect where the thing you fixed becomes your problem even when your fix has nothing to do with the (potentially future) problem.

If this holds true for Wikipedia it'd make sense to see more rejections than fixes. Let the person submitting it fix it. It's their problem.

roghummal··on Airbnb Horror Story Points to Need for Precautions
It was interesting watching you edit the shit out of this comment. Iteration is great but, man, sometimes you should iterate alone.

And when you fuck up as badly as you did, own it. You'll do better next time.

EDIT:

Not so sure about "but, man, sometimes you should iterate alone." Others learn from our failures.

EDIT:

Hurt feels? "A troll, ignore."

showsomeempathy looks to have been created to post in this thread.

I think I made a straw man!

>There are what, more than 100k stays every night in an Airbnb? I'm sure you could find a horror story for Hilton, or Walmart, or Apple, or any other company that operates at such a big scale.

Hilton, Walmart, Apple -- 100k? Big scale?

EDIT: Ambiguous reason.

jk.

Just noting that this was oskarth's original text (as I saw it).

EDIT: I'm the nitpicker not the straw man D:

roghummal··on OpenBSD removes support for non-UTF8 locales
>but somehow I still feel weird telling people a meeting is at 15:00 in an email.

It feels weird because you think people will think it's weird. You're probably right.

Personally I use a 24-hour representation and convert it to 12 when communicating with others.

11:59AM -> 12:00PM, 11:59PM -> 12:00AM caused me mental discomfort for a long time. A 24-hour clock made a lot more sense, but it doesn't seem like most other people have a problem with 12.

They'd rather you used "normal" time. If you want to fight that battle go for it. I believe you're right.

Next: Date format!

roghummal··on Why Debian returned to FFmpeg
>both sides think they are the one-true-ffmpeg but both have valid claims.

ffmpeg is the one-true-ffmpeg. If libav surpassed ffmpeg, we'd have libav. The one-true-libav. libav doesn't have a valid claim; It's a fork second to ffmpeg.

Somebody put the cart before the horse. Happy to see it fixed.

Consumer,

You may have seen some news coverage of a potential problem in Cyberdyne's HUman(TM) line of products. I'm contacting you personally because you ordered or expressed interest in this product line.

Original thought is a defect we are aware of and are in the process of correcting. Very few units display this behavior and every unit you received was fully tested and within parameters.

I personally apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and there will not be any further issues on my line.

Thank You,

Allen Cheise

But you're naming instances where inferior technology "won" over better technology.

?

Wait, are you saying Europe is the reason those inferior solutions are the world's problem? That's a big accusation.

They're really smoothing out the edges. I could see myself advocating for this the next time we're shopping but I'd like to see an option to set a limit on response time.

Great project!

Here? Vim won. Emacs is the phase you go through before you go back to vim or go forward to Word or Sublime Text.
