rogerthis··on Free prison phone calls boost family ties, rehabilitation
In Brazil free phone calls would* allow criminals to manage crime from prison, through family.

* would = do; prisoners have easy access to cellphones, etc. Very common are scam calls originating from prisons. Classic real life meme is one criminal calling one person who happened to also be in another prison.

rogerthis··on The deindustrialization of Germany
It's always one aristocracy fighting another. It will always be. Some are better, some are worse for those below.
rogerthis··on JupyterLab 4.0
Good enough for me and, clients love it.
rogerthis··on Microsoft-branded mice and keyboards are going away after 40 years
A friend used to say those were the only things MS do (did) right.
rogerthis··on Ask HN: Is it normal for Microsoft Azure support to send you to a 3rd party
My experience is unless you're a big payer (1000s), you are a long way until getting to a MS guy. And the first and second level (3rd parties) I've got are mostly "have you read this part of the manual?".
rogerthis··on How to Beat Russia [pdf]
Looks like a consulting company report (I could say a name, but there are more that apply).

Also, despite "...with combat-experienced...", it feels like no skin in the game.

rogerthis··on Where are my Git UI features from the future?
git add -p

or by right clicking in the diff pane in git-gui (which is almost never mentioned).

Although I use the cli more, gitk and git-gui solve all my GUI needs.

rogerthis··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
Every time I read things like this I take the opposite as the most likely.
rogerthis··on Brazilian vote counting (real time)
No one sees a vote. It's just bleebleeblee and it's magically computed.

PS: Weirdly.

rogerthis··on Five years later, Google is still all-in on Kotlin
> That number, the company said, is now doubling every year

Does it really matter when other langs LOC can been growing faster, maybe much faster?

rogerthis··on Ask HN: Why do you trust electronic voting machines?
I really would like to hear the opinion of HN people about the Brazilian system.
rogerthis··on A meteor or alien tech: Harvard professor plans UFO expedition
As I always look at the comments first, I've got confused with no information about if he died or not. Had to click the link.
rogerthis··on Vatican’s list of films
Groundhog Day (1993).
rogerthis··on Prince Philip has died
I think he was friend of Martin Lings, who was very close to the Perennialist School (René Guenon, Frithjof Schuon).
rogerthis··on The Kotlin Foundation
That's not news. It exists since, well, I really don't remember (2018, I guess).
rogerthis··on Congressional investigation shows Celgene, Teva plotted to keep drug prices high
In Brazil they control the prices and keep them... high.
rogerthis··on Players are fixing Microsoft Flight Simulator’s monuments with Google Maps
I think FAA has some nice material publicly available.

I'm not much aware of details, but it seems it's thriving here in Brazil.
rogerthis··on Federal Reserve slashes interest rates to zero
Poster probably not human.
rogerthis··on Why SQLite succeeded as a database (2016)

rogerthis··on Brazilian Judge Orders Release of Former President Lula Da Silva
That's not the truth. That's the version they are pushing since then..
rogerthis··on Everything Is Getting Louder
That's surely a sign.
rogerthis··on 5000 years ago Sahara was a green landscape with lakes and rivers
Goat?
rogerthis··on ‘Knitting Is Coding’ and Yarn Is Programmable in This Physics Lab
Old domestic knitting machines had "software" in cards that were interpreted mechanically by the machine. Mom sill has an old Elgin in her house.
rogerthis··on European Parliament approves copyright reform
Lots of laws propagate to other places, as time passes. Brazil now has its own GDPR version, which is heavily inspired by EU's GDPR. Some laws are good to be the same, others are not (this is one of the reasons people has been supporting the most recent nationalist movements).
rogerthis··on Gatwick Airport: Drone sightings cause delays
Some don't even need GPS, just an inertial measurement unit onboard.
rogerthis··on Group led by Thomas Piketty presents plan for ‘a fairer Europe’
The problem with every large scale plan is how to bring the "russians" on board (by russians I mean the people, but maybe also Russia).
rogerthis··on Ask HN: Could programmers convince society not to use software voting systems?
Do you want horror story in this area, look for how elections are done in Brazil. 100% digital, from voting to counting to totals.

It remembers me a book: The Best Enemy Money Can Buy, by Antony C. Sutton.
