roflyear··on The new skill in AI is not prompting, it's context engineering
Why?
roflyear··on Human coders are still better than LLMs
It's better-than-senior at a some things, but worse-than-junior at a lot of things.
roflyear··on Management = Bullshit (LLM Edition)
yeah, for sure. occasionally it came up and we had to give small feedback.
roflyear··on Claude 4
Can you share the code?
roflyear··on Management = Bullshit (LLM Edition)
People will down vote you, but when I worked for a mega corp and a hurricane knocked out our office, they had a plan, and it worked: they set up in a hotel, and continued operations, people stayed employed, people got the products (which were largely essentials) in their supermarkets, etc.

This is not like, super trivial. People needed to figure out power, hardware, networking, vpn, etc.. etc.. etc.. and staffing. A lot of that had absolutely nothing to do with IT, but some of it did.

roflyear··on Claude 4
It matters even with recent cutoffs, these models have no idea when to use a package or not (if it's no longer maintained, etc)

You can fix this by first figuring out what packages to use or providing your package list, tho.

roflyear··on A Research Preview of Codex
No, we're trying to have a conversation.
roflyear··on A Research Preview of Codex
I'm skeptical. I wouldn't call brute-force creating, not really. And Google obviously has an interest in promoting AI.

Not to say it's not impressive and good.

roflyear··on Building my own solar power system
You mean roaster? ceto.coffee
roflyear··on Building my own solar power system
What's your farm? How can someone reach out to buy small amounts of coffee from you, say 2-3 70kg bags?
roflyear··on Getting AI to write good SQL
Or, just let their users deal with the bugs b/c churn will be less than the cost of developers.

> AI is creating novel solution to problems humans haven't cracked in centuries

Really?

roflyear··on A Research Preview of Codex
"After a couple of million suggestions and a few dozen repetitions of the overall process"

How much of it is brute force?

roflyear··on A Research Preview of Codex
If you mean create as in literally, sure. But not in being creative. AI can't solve novel problems yet. The person you're replying to obviously means being creative not literally creating something.
roflyear··on OpenAI reaches agreement to buy Windsurf for $3B
You can't really make a living anymore being a furniture maker. Even semi-famous people in the industry have a hard time doing it. Only a few make enough to feed their family.

Making cabinets, etc.. sure. But woodworking has drastically changed, and maybe programming is changing that way, too.

roflyear··on U.S. Economy Contracts at 0.3% Rate in First Quarter
Right, but those $11 products have not been sold yet b/c companies were trying to import as much as possible to avoid tariffs.

I've seen this in coffee - roasters buying a year's worth of packaging.

roflyear··on U.S. Economy Contracts at 0.3% Rate in First Quarter
They're going to weigh what they think is the greatest risk overall and tackle that if they have a high-unemployment high-inflation environment. That won't mean cutting rates in all cases.
roflyear··on Whistleblower: DOGE Siphoned NLRB Case Data
Sorry, I didn't mean to frame this in any way, just meant to say what's going on.
roflyear··on Whistleblower: DOGE Siphoned NLRB Case Data
It's a great case study of someone having no knowledge of something coming in and saying "we can save half the budget" then, oops - saying maybe they can do 5% of the original promise, lol.

I wonder how much DOGE is going to cost at the end of the day? I hope not literally billions of dollars, so maybe the $100b-200b they save will be net positive after the lawsuits, etc..

roflyear··on Whistleblower: DOGE Siphoned NLRB Case Data
Stuff gets flagged as "flamebait" or something similar (forget the exact term) on HN - I think this can be done manually and is also automated, but it can definitely be turned off manually by mods - and it gets sent to the void b/c of risk of starting unwanted conversations.
roflyear··on Whistleblower: DOGE Siphoned NLRB Case Data
Well, kind of. There are people there who don't care about that.
roflyear··on $70M in 60 Seconds: How Insider Info Helped Someone 28x Their Money
Long term this also really hurts the faith in the market, so it's going to hurt a lot of people who have exposure to anything on US exchanges.
roflyear··on $70M in 60 Seconds: How Insider Info Helped Someone 28x Their Money
There is some kind of weird issue here, not sure what it is called, that where if the media were to blow this up everyone would say they are overreacting.

So it becomes a "seat at the table is better than no seat" thing where they won't ask Trump these questions.

roflyear··on Trump temporarily drops tariffs to 10% for most countries
They literally just declare the item at a lower value. It isn't hard.
roflyear··on China raises tariffs on US goods to 84% as rift escalates
Companies will just lie to get around the tariffs, anyway. See here: https://decentespresso.com/blog/trumps_tariffs_impact_on_you...
roflyear··on China raises tariffs on US goods to 84% as rift escalates
This specifically, no reason, Trump administration is just doing whatever they want moment from moment.

Largely, China is a threat to the US politically, and they are a threat to our industry and global economic dominance.

roflyear··on Ask HN: I'm an MIT senior and still unemployed – and so are most of my friends
This is also your school's problem, you should talk to them.
roflyear··on U.S. stock futures tumble indicating another plummet on Wall Street
Nah probably around 30% from ath, or a little more. 50% would be really extreme. The tariffs will have a massive impact but not that big, imo. It won't completely destroy the US economy.
roflyear··on U.S. stock futures tumble indicating another plummet on Wall Street
Yeah but it's been >20 a few times, but sure it does look high.
roflyear··on U.S. stock futures tumble indicating another plummet on Wall Street
I think people will tend to argue two points:

1) Debt isn't bad in itself, running a deficit isn't bad in itself. (though they can be bad in some situations!)

2) The US is in the position to "fix" the debt problem in a lot of creative ways (I mean, some pro-tariff are arguing this too, right? just that the creative way is tariffs).
