rodyancy··on Ask HN: Developer world Mac obsessed?
Apple makes the best hardware. I'm not talking about ram, processor speed, power, blah, blah, blah. I'm talking about the best integrated package, between design, specs, and OS. Apple also makes some of the best software.

Developers make software that they want to run on all hardware, especially the best hardware. They appreciate software when it works, and is designed well. Some developers value design more than others. Those, developers understand and appreciate the value in Macs.

rodyancy··on Why I think the Amazon App Store will be a better deal for developers
They won't be unique to the device. The iPhone already has crosswords, writing apps, twitter apps, sudoko apps, etc.

The only things unique about Kindle apps will be the slightly larger screen, lack of animation, lack of color, and lack of unlimited data transfer.

rodyancy··on ‘Piracy Isn’t Killing Music’ Says Ed O’Brien Radiohead’s Guitarist
I think this is an overly extreme view and you may be able to see it from another light is you take a second to think it through.

First, let me say, I'm not defending the past or present practices of the major labels. I agree that their tactic of suing file-sharers was too heavy handed and did more to harm their business than to help it. That being said, what would you do if you had a business model that successfully created, delivered and received value and suddenly new technology made it dead simple for people to illegally obtain the end product you relied on? Sure, they could have released an early competitor to Napster, but they would have had to drop the price to free, and that wouldn't have sustained their model.

And don't forget, we wouldn't be having this conversation at all without the benefit of the Label's old business model, because Radio Head wouldn't exist as it is today without early support and promotion from their original label.

rodyancy··on How a spare server turned into Twitpic, the $1.5M+ a year startup
That was a joke, really. The scene here is limited. There are a few of us working on interesting things. The problem is when they take off the founders tend to move, like the guys behind Ping and Noah.

Anyway, when you do move look me up.

rodyancy··on How a spare server turned into Twitpic, the $1.5M+ a year startup
The real story is the Tulsa tech scene. First, the Ping.fm acquisition and now the Twitpic story. Tulsa FTW.
rodyancy··on Yesterday Was Twitter’s Highest Usage Day Ever. Today Will Be Bigger.
You would think that Techcrunch would understand that even if uniques visitors to twitter.com may have "stalled" many users are moving away from twitter.com and to api services.
rodyancy··on Ten Rules for Web Startups
The protocol doesn't have to be open for everyone forever. When these feeder companys begin profitting, and when Twitter determines the time is right, they can charge for acess to the protocol.
rodyancy··on Ping.fm acquired by Seesmic
I've met Sean and Adam and they seem to be smart, hardworking guys. I remember Adam saying Ping.fm is about the tenth app, or "thing" they worked on, although I'm sure many of those other projects were completed over a weekend or given little attention. At any rate, these are the type of people that should be successful. I think Seesmic made a good move.
rodyancy··on Ask HN: Weekend update -- What weekend projects are you up to?
I'm building a photo subject generating/photo sharing app for the iPhone.
rodyancy··on Why Terrorists Leave Me Bullish On Apple
Lets give the author a break. I'm pretty sure it is written as a joke. Is it a waste of time? Yes. Should it have been on HN? Probably not.
rodyancy··on In 2010, Demand For US Fixed Income Has To Increase Elevenfold... Or Else
I appreciate your analogy, however, I believe the author is saying that discontinuing the use of the antibiotic at anytime in the next year, will lead to a detrimental relapse.

I don't necessarily agree, but the argument is predicated on, amongst other things, the Fed not being able to raise interest rates and maintain steady 3% growth.

rodyancy··on Ask HN: What are the current best solutions for the 30 YC 'ideas'?
1. Avatar, or other movies that can't be fully experienced without 3D or other tech that is only available in theaters. For music additional offerings like I Am T-Pain.
rodyancy··on PPK: "Apple is not evil. iPhone developers are stupid."
And, the payment system you end up incorporating will not be as dead simple to use as iTunes.

As bad as Apple is at vetting and distributing software (when compared to the web they are bad a distributing software, at least in terms of speed), they are terrific, although expensive, payment processes.

The fact that every iPhone user necessarily has an iTunes account, and they are only one touch and a password away from paying you for your software, can't be overstated.

rodyancy··on IPhone Owners Demand To See Apple Source Code
I'm inclined to agree. Trade secret would be one of the compelling objections I left room for in my my comment.
rodyancy··on IPhone Owners Demand To See Apple Source Code
From what I read, Apple isn't agreeing to, they may be compelled to by the judge. You are correct, apple isn't selling users the software on the devices, they are licensing it, and the terms of that license likely stipulates that users have no right to the code (I don't know for sure, because I've never read the license, even as I type this from my iPhone).

In this case the license isn't the issue. The court isn't bound by the license, and if it deems it necessary for evidentiary purposes, over and above any objections Apple raises, then it will order Apple to turn over the code.

rodyancy··on Ask HN: What are the best places to publish/sell downloadable software?
When you run that adwords campaign, split test. I have a suspicion you are going to make how a user can download an app from your site far more obvious.

The site looks attractive, though.

rodyancy··on Netbooks are the new Razor Scooter
You make it sound like a heavy, cumbersome, iPhone that can't make calls.
rodyancy··on How I knew I was done with my company
How did they respond to that? Obviously, they were still interested enough to proceed with the offer, but do you think they offered less because of that condition? Also, what went into preparing them to take the reins? I guess you probably had key employees that you could transfer your responsibilities to before the sale. Were there any other logistics that went into it?
rodyancy··on HN review: thoughts on Blue Frog Gaming's new Twitter game?
There are several iPhone apps linked to twitter that notify users that they are about to tweet such and such. If you do this, make it easy to decline and continue to play. You will lose some of the viral aspect, but you will satisfy the HN crowd.

To gain back virality let players gain points or money or whatever on a per tweet basis. I'm sure you already do this.

Which brings me to my next point..I don't know if you do this, because I signed up and tried to play and I had no idea what to do. Granted, I'm probably not your target audience, because I've never played these types of games (Mob Wars, Youville, etc.)

Basically, you've got to boil it down either on the splash page, or the initial load (maybe with a modal popup), if you want inexperienced users, who don't have hours to investigate, to play.

rodyancy··on Ask HN: Please review my startup. theBuzz.at
I'd be interested to see a service like this track what is happening real time. So, imagine a user goes to a bar and texts/emails/iPhone app, whatever, that would buzz up that local for the night. Then users could look to see what is going on in real time. That may be what you are doing here, if so, I would make it more clear. As it is, it seems like a review site, almost like Urbanspoon.
rodyancy··on I have failed twice. Business tips in hindsight.
I don't necessarily disagree with the author, but I would be more inclined to take his advice if I knew he had succeeded at least once.
rodyancy··on The anti-if campaign
Agreed, I read the comma before people as adding emphasis, almost like saying PEOPLE.
rodyancy··on Startup school emails sent
Bummer. I was not accepted. I guess that is what I get for having a non-technical background (attorney). At least it is streamed!
rodyancy··on Ask HN: How do you concentrate?
I'm excited about simplynoise.com. Thanks for the tip.
rodyancy··on What's the Secret Success of Mint.com? The Real Numbers...
Would anyone have a problem raising 100k from friends and family, knowing that in 12 months if you were unable to raise a series A, you would be forced to tell them that they had little chance of seeing their money again?
rodyancy··on Ask HN: Feelings of regret over career path?
I agree. And, the quest for knowledge makes the study of Philosophy look appealing. It appears to be a mysterious field where all truth resides.

Take it from me, it isn't. I got a degree in philosophy. It isn't all bad. It will teach you to read fast, write well, and think logically. It is basically the study of logic and how it relates to language.

If it makes the OP feel better, I went Philosophy, Law, and now all I want to do is hack. The grass is always greener.

Now, we should both just make something.

rodyancy··on Dan Pink on the surprising science of motivation [video]
When he mentioned the experiments where monetary reward is shown to stifle creative problem solving, it made me think of the frequently quoted advice: do what you love and the money will come. I wonder if there is a link there?
rodyancy··on An Insider On the Apple Tablet
The majority of the market this is targeting doesn't "do work" on computers, they consume media.

I remember after first getting my iPhone 2g, and playing with it for a day straight, when I went back to my laptop I wanted to manipulate the UI by touching the screen. When I say "wanted" I mean I uncousciously reached for the screen on a couple of occasions. I got over that quickly, but it made me consider what this form factor would be good for and whether it would sell.

I agree that this machine won't replace the laptop as a work machine. I do think that it may be a better solution, from a UI standpoint, than the current netbooks on the market. Have you seen people at coffee shops typing on those things? I know it will be better than a netbook in bed or while laying on a couch, which is were I find myself using my iPhone and not my laptop.

Also, $700 isn't that much when you consider that the Kindle is $300 and used to be $500. Think how much more you will be able to do on an iTablet, or whatever you want to call it.

rodyancy··on Ask HN: Income on the Side?
I write contacts for businesses, file trademarks and copyrights, and an occasional probate. Unfortunately, the law degree doesn't help the day to day start-up too much.
