rodorgas··on Frameworkless Movement
I think this document reverberates a feel that people uses what’s trending without considering its tradeoffs. This article is more on point about this subject: https://www.gregnavis.com/articles/the-architecture-no-one-n...
rodorgas··on Frameworkless Movement
Your code uses libraries, while frameworks uses your code.
rodorgas··on Russia, after protests, tells Google not to advertise “illegal” events
Another examples are dictatorial coups in Latin America supported by USA: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_involvement_in...
rodorgas··on iTerm2 3.3
I think that iTerm is prettier. The font rendering looks better to me.
rodorgas··on Uncap - Map Caps Lock to Escape on Windows, Linux, and macOS
I use vim, so esc is one of the most important keys. But I use esc in most apps very frequently. I don’t use Caps Lock at all.
rodorgas··on Guido blames social media for his decision to abandon the supervision of Python
A dictator that can’t stand to others questioning your decisions is a weak dictator. Python is mature enough to have the current governance model, but his exit could have been less noisy.
rodorgas··on Update Regarding Add-Ons in Firefox
I don't like the fact that I can't run an extension that wasn't signed by Mozilla. This behaviour lacks freedom.
rodorgas··on How I'm able to take notes in mathematics lectures using LaTeX and Vim
Caps Lock is the original placement of the Esc key. It's much more useful having Esc on your home row.
rodorgas··on How I'm able to take notes in mathematics lectures using LaTeX and Vim
You don't need any external program. Open System Preferences, go to Keyboard and click on "Modifiers Keys...", then you can map Caps Lock to Esc.
rodorgas··on W3C approves WebAuthn as the web standard for password-free logins
Passwords will continue to exist. But it has a lot of flaws, so it's nice have alternatives.
rodorgas··on Software Engineering at Google (2017)
It’s not a physiological problem, it’s a technical problem. They do it so they work gets easier. It’s much easier to write code than to read code.
rodorgas··on Status.github.com: “We're failing over a data storage system”
I’m receiving emails (a lot of duplicates) from comments in PR, but they won’t show up in the browser. I guess people are trying to submit multiple times, the email is sent but comment isn’t posted.
rodorgas··on Why I’m done with Chrome
I have perfomance issues on heavy JS websites. Facebook is almost unusable. But I have a bunch of extensions. If I try using a new profile (no extensions, default preferences, etc) it's nice and smooth.
rodorgas··on Tell HN: Using Gmail? You will be force logged into Chrome
I have performance issues with heavy sites because I use many extensions. Sometimes, I disable all extensions and it stills sluggish on Facebook for example, but the issue goes away when I use a new profile. Maybe you can try it.
rodorgas··on A Popular Mac App That Sent Users' Browsing History to China Has Been Removed
> The next release of macOS, macOS Mojave, will protect content like Safari History or cookies from apps, even those to which users have granted access to their home directory.

What about other browsers?

rodorgas··on RssHub – A feed aggregator that can generate feeds from pretty much everything
Facebook used to have a RSS feed, but was shutdown: it's not interesting to Facebook that users spent less time on their plataform. AFAIK RSS feed are currently only supported by https://fetchrss.com/, but it's paid or ad-based.
rodorgas··on Um – Create your own man pages so you can remember how to do stuff
What’s the meaning of such name?
rodorgas··on Ask HN: Can companies stop using Google's CAPTCHA?
Please elaborate on your rationale.
rodorgas··on “I'm basically giving myself a permanent vacation from being BDFL”
It's the same behaviour of ordinary users, in general. A developer who uses your library is, basically, a user. They see your work as an obligation, not as a gift you are giving to everyone.
rodorgas··on Firefox Lockbox
I paid a one time license fee of 1Password, then I use it offline on laptop and iPhone. I sync them through wifi regularly.

This offline use option is not very disclosed on the website but it’s possible and in my opinion it’s more safe.

I’ve tried open source password apps but the problem it’s they are all from independent developers. These developers can’t afford security reviews and I can’t tell if the version on the App Store is the same of the version on GitHub. If there’s a vulnerability and passwords leak, a company can be legally responsible, it’s not the same with independent developers.

And it’s not practical to install an app and its updates from source on iPhone. So I went with the closed source 1Password because it’s a big company and everybody is looking at them.

rodorgas··on Youtube-dl: Command-line program to download videos
When I want to download a video from a site I always think “it would be great if youtube-dl worked with this niche website, but I think it’s too specific”, then I try and it works, I’m always surprised.
rodorgas··on SMS over IRC
Why choose SMS today given it’s message length limitations? Also there’s the lack of security: SMS isn’t encrypted and can be sniffed. It’s expensive, while other modern messaging alternatives doesn’t charge by message.
rodorgas··on Doing Windows, Part 1: MS-DOS and Its Discontents
The default on Windows 10, Gnome, Unity, KDE and Xfce is double-click to open file. Otherwise, how would you select an file without opening it?
rodorgas··on Doing Windows, Part 1: MS-DOS and Its Discontents
Sorry but all items seem invalid.

- Do you move the mouse cursor with the keyboard? The cursor is designed to be used with the mouse, controlling the mouse cursor with the keyboard is slow.

- Every modern OS have menus across the top of the screen. If you think it's a bad choice, you're alone.

- Double click may sound bad, but right-click is worse. Look at non-tech people using a computer, they will double click instead of right-click and run.

- To paste without formatting, you use Ctrl+Shift+V in most programs.

rodorgas··on Doing Windows, Part 1: MS-DOS and Its Discontents
Google Docs has the paste without formatting. In the top menu, click Edit > Paste without formatting. You can also use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+V.

This shortcut is common in many applications I use.

rodorgas··on Show HN: Mimicking the Bloomberg menu widget without JavaScript
Between zero or all, could be many or some.
rodorgas··on YouTube’s Piracy Filter Blocks MIT Courses, Blender Videos, and More
It’s so expensive that only Google can afford.
rodorgas··on Batch editing files with ed
You can do it using multiple cursors. On Sublime, you place the cursor on beginning of “value”, then press Ctrl+Shift+Down until the end - there will be a cursor on every line. Then you press Ctrl+Right to select all values on the second column. Then press Ctrl+P and choose “Convert to Upper Case”, or just Ctrl+KU.
rodorgas··on Is it worth supporting Firefox?
Companies simply get better leads with tracking. You don’t really know about your audience when you are online, because there are so much traffic and so many users.
rodorgas··on Hello: A new social network founded by Orkut's creator
Google don’t care about shutting down products with large user base. Like Google Reader.
