How exactly is AI crashing the economy....? Do you walk around with these beliefs every day?
rockemsockem··on AI is propping up the US economy
I almost always validate what I get back from LLMs and it's usually right. Even when it isn't it still usually gets me closer to my goal (e.g maybe some UX has changed where a setting I'm looking for in an app has changed, etc).

IDK where you're getting the idea that it's fading out. So many people are using the "slightly better chatbots" every single day.

Btw if you only think chat GPT is slightly better than what we had a decade ago then I do not believe that you have used any chat bots at all, either 10 years ago or recently because that's actually a completely insane take.

I'm not talking about time saving. AI seems to speed up my searching a bit since I can get results quicker without having to find the right query then find a site that actually answers my question, but that's minor, as nice as it is.

I use AI in my personal life to learn about things I never would have without it because it makes the cost of finding any basic knowledge basically 0. Diet improvement ideas based on several quick questions about gut functioning, etc, recently learning how to gauge tsunami severity, and tons of other things. Once you have several fundamental terms and phrases for new topics it's easy to then validate the information with some quick googling too.

How much have you actually tried using LLMs and did you just use normal chat or some big grand complex tool? I mostly just use chat and prefer to enter my code in artisanally.

I find that almost all doctors give useless advice. On multiple occasions I've been advised that there was nothing wrong but they can run a scan "if I insist" and then bam, the exact problem I expected shows up clear as day.

They're morons for the most part.

Elizabeth Warren has gone on several talk shows insisting interest rates should be lowered. If you look at video from the last time Powell was being questioned by Congress there were many other Democratic congress-people asking him why he wouldn't lower rates.

Personally I trust Jerome Powell more than any other part of the government at the moment. The man is made of steel.

Tbf I think most would say that the VR/AR boom is still ongoing, just with less glitz.

Edit: agree on the metaverse as implemented/demoed not being much, but that's literally one application

I'm continually amazed to find takes like this. Can you explain how you don't find clear utility, at the personal level, from LLMs?

I am being 100% genuine here, I struggle to understand how the most useful things I've ever encountered are thought of this way and would like to better understand your perspective.

rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
There are tons of doctors and lawyers that are bad. If you aren't vetting them as much as you can then you're going to wind up with some pretty bad apples eventually.
rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
> I don't consider myself being a person with an oversized ego.

People with oversized egos never do.

Lots of people can talk at length at a high level about complex systems and can't even write a for loop. If you think you're somehow special and should get to skip that basic validation then IDK, sounds like egotistical behavior to me.

What year was this? Google mostly stopped asking these sorts of "you gotta know it to get it" questions a while ago. Probably different if you're a file systems expert, but I'm guessing that's not the case?
rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
Your cool prior work got you the interview. The interview is to interrogate how you think and small problems are the best way to do that. You're sounding a bit arrogant, as if writing binary search is beneath you. Possible that they marked you as a bad culture fit if you acted that way in the interview.
rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
How do you expect to measure their ability to code after hiring though? They could just be getting chat GPT etc to write everything.
rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
It usually takes significant time for someone to get up to their base level of effectiveness in a new organization, so I don't really think this is better, in fact it's much worse because "doing the job" includes a lot of ancillary things like familiarizing oneself with the tools, metrics, codebase, etc.

Much better to just have a live coding test that tries to measure your communication, effectiveness at working on a problem, and your raw coding skills.

rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
What engineering interviewing process catches things like this?

Most coding interviews are accompanied by work experience discussions which CAN identify stuff like this, although obviously people can BS.

rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
Have you interviewed people recently? The "worst developers" absolutely cannot solve basic problems.
rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
> And even in the trades it isn’t common.

Source???

I'm definitely aware of welders and machinists having to show the quality of their work for interviews.

You might not think that basic coding/algorithms problems are good tests of actual performance, but being able to solve a problem, talk about your approach, debug issues when they come up, and then discuss expanding the solution in prod including trade-offs is actually a really great indicator of future performance in my experience.

rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
So much this.

Some people so often say that credentialing helps all these industries that they know nothing about, when in fact the norm or high-performing end of those industries do the exact same thing.

rockemsockem··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
Personally I definitely feel the stress impacting my abilities during coding interviews. Last time I interviewed I used a few live coding prep tools to prepare and realized that the main value I got was just getting desensitized to the stress of solving a problem in front of someone.

That being said, IMO there is no good replacement. Especially with LLMs being as good as they are you simply cannot trust someone to solve a problem without supervision and rely on the result alone as a signal. Not just because they might cheat, but moreso because the main signal you get from these interviews is watching someone think through the problem and talking through it with them.

These should not be pass/fail tests, there's so much more that goes into a good evaluation.

rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
This is literally an ad hominem.

Meta is capable of having correct actions and opinions and you are grossly oversimplifying the EU regulation.

rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
Lol, I try to do as little frontend as possible anyway, seems like React is better than many alternatives though?

The comment I responded to said Meta didn't do anything good, which is obviously affecting their opinion on whether Meta opposing European AI regulation can possibly be good. Certainly there's a lot of not great stuff Meta does.

rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
I don't recall sharing my opinion on this particular regulation.

I think perhaps you need to reread my comment or lookup "irony"

rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
Idk I feel like there are a lot of non-technical people who work in tech here now.
rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
But the law still caused that, of course regulation is going to be adversarial and they should anticipate that.
rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
TBH I would most prefer that models weren't forbidden to answer certain questions.
rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
I don't think good intentions alone are enough to do good.
rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
That's fair, but you don't need to blindly side with anyone.

My original post was about all the comments saying they knew nothing about the regulation, but that they sided with Europe.

I think that gleeful ignorance caught me off guard.

rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
I think your command of the English language might be your issue
rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
See that's crazy though.

You don't like open source ML (including or not including LLMs, depending on how you feel about them)

You don't like React?

You don't like PyTorch?

Like a lot of really smart and really dedicated people work on pretty cool stuff at Meta. You don't have to like Facebook, Instagram, etc to see that.

rockemsockem··on Meta says it won't sign Europe AI agreement
Yeah I think that's part of it.

Probably partly because reddit somehow seems to have become even worse over the last several years. So there are probably more people fleeing
