rock_artist··on MXC - a sandboxed code execution system
That’s exactly it. There should be some permission logic for delegating.

But as always, there are rivals trying to set their tone on what’s the standard. We all wish there was one unified agreed concept that will work but I guess the most common one will eventually survive.

Just as Microsoft in a sense embraces Linux with WSL and also Apple has their virtualization framework.

I hope we’ll eventually get unified model management system to include also permissions designed properly

rock_artist··on ArtCraft Apps – open-source Adobe compatible suite written in Rust
As many companies, we've started to use AI on a daily-basis. Yet, it didn't cut the need for testing (both automated and manual) and reviewing.

Now here we see a fully blown suite which is already alarming for basic testability.

Also, we had several apps targeting directly at Adobe in the past.

* Blackmagic DaVinci is the biggest, and it also bought several companies to start fusing a one-stop solution.

* Affinity also started with single app that got attention before being swallowed into Canva.

Leaving compatibility and ui-workflow (which is important to existing users), It's much more sane to start and focus on a single app instead of a fully blown package.

From Adobe/Creative Cloud users, I do know Acrobat Pro is one of the problematic apps they have in terms (it freezes, guess a lot of legacy code, etc). And yet, even where there is some competition on PDF editors, Acrobat is still strong also due to UX and features.

rock_artist··on We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare
Indeed from a company targeting global market, scoping the contestants to US & Canada residents is already not very welcoming.
rock_artist··on Updates to Full Disk Access in macOS
being a nerd here, sudo - yes, but indeed I thought the entire UNIX design of everything is files and there are permissions, groups, etc, should be sufficient.

But I think the "new world" is, we are over stimulated (eg. agents ask us 'permissions' for a long command) so we might give a sudo not fully aware of it where a big bold UX message box after a 'pseudo' sudo would better catch our eyes.

So it seems this is about adding additional layers over already existing ones in a way?

rock_artist··on Apple Pass Designer
> Pass Designer beta requires macOS 27 or later

Interesting if this is due to concrete reason or not.

rock_artist··on Sudo – A dedicated music player designed around listening to music
Maybe it’s me being old but I don’t understand why I’d want this device for 249$.

I know some younger gens are looking for phoneless experiences, but for that price you can find old devices and simply recycle their usage. There are enough roms aimed and making a “dumb” mp3 player and include 3.5” and decent audio.

So I wonder if I miss something. The fomo here is messing with me.

rock_artist··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
What's surprised me, just earlier today I let Codex write a minor PR for simple open-source webapp. I needed HTTPS for testing secured context Web API. (Web Bluetooth)

While testing it locally Codex by itself suggests using CF Tunnels but what's more interesting it actually used the Quick Tunnels.

Coming from days where I get warnings of vibe-coded generated code using deprecated code or older APIs, I must say using something so fresh is quite impressive.

rock_artist··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
I believe people in HN also remember the days before we had MMUs.

And I'm sure everyone remembers ransomware.

No one is saying OS shouldn't have security measures, permissions/entitlements and app sandboxing, user land, etc.

I still don't understand why my desktop/laptop is allowed to be 'owned' by me. but my iPhone is a closed-gardened where I'm just a guest in a device I own. and that's nearly what Google is now doing.

rock_artist··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
A little off-topic, I have to admit, I did play Doom back in the 90s and I know it is just a game.

But is it just me or other folks feel uncanny seeing "a machine" playing Doom with low-latency as the first demo.

While I'm optimistic that humanity is good (but sometimes makes bad decisions), My first thought was seeing such models used by armies.

rock_artist··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
We already had enough proof of vulnerabilities in the OS code and Manufacturers (eg. Samsung/Lenovo/etc privileged apps), there were enough reviewed apps that were used for fraud or access as bad actors.

My banking works in my 'unprotected' computer browser. So I'd expect giving anyone equivalent freedom. I don't mind if there's a default for gate-keepers as long as they allow competition. but I would expect to have same freedom on my mobile devices as on my laptop.

rock_artist··on Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows
Apple Foundations Models Framework already aimed towards some generalized API for models. Personally I like it, just as I would be a little happier if instead of codex/claude/antigravity (rip gemini cli) I would have single standardized interface.

With mobile devices especially where ideally models could be shared across several apps.

But this specific code I'd assume is targeted to comply with EU regulations more than anything.

OT:

Since I've moved to Spain my principal Apple account is still in my home country but I've made another one for local app-store (since some local apps aren't available if you're not in the Spanish store).

iPhone is acting really strange, I'm logged to my principal account for iCloud+ and anything and local App Store.

If I log back to my principal account, I loose HCE mode and my building NFC app stops working until I re-log in the Spanish Apple Store.

If I'm logged at the Spanish account, I loose Siri AI which is blocked in the EU...

rock_artist··on Norton Neo Browser
Norton is very heated in the comments here. But even separating this concern.

Personally, the landing page itself hurts my trust of the goal.

Why?

When we think of a browser, before anything. We want something that feels snappy and performant. Even if the browser IS snappy. the fact that this page feels unresponsive in a way on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro. already raises concerns of performance.

For my sanity, I've tried Vivaldi's website, Brave's website. All feels "light" and scrolling is a breeze on Safari.

Those are just my few cents, but I'm pretty sure others might feel the same when making a landing page for any product where it should feel responsive.

rock_artist··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
> I wonder what the common thread is.

Regulation.

For China I would assume like other services, if there's some cloud involved, it should be on Chinese soil and accessible to China.

For EU harder to guess, but again the lock-in with "Private Cloud Computing" feels related.

rock_artist··on Apple Unveils iPhone Duo
Microsoft also had Windows XP Tablets [1] and also WinCE/PocketPC many years before.

While the Duo is more subtle for some changes, it might show us the "new" Apple where the innovation comes from fine-tuning and getting a mature product to the market.

At least from their presentation, it looks like they sat on the fence and looked at pretty much any good or bad thing that happened during the past years.

Seeing some reviews on the Samsung Fold for example, mentioned the speakers feeling weird as the audio orientation is fixed to the speakers location. Those little details make a difference.

I really hope modern Apple would go back to the details and nuances.

rock_artist··on DaVinci Resolve 21.1
AI is elevating one’s capability but not replacing it.

Then you have experience and skills.

Someone with zero skills in music will be able to make a 'song' but a savvy producer would use tools differently and could leverage them to actually make something creative.

Anyone can make an app those days (or a website or whatever) but mileage varies based on one's nature, also the gotchas of someone with zero knowledge of a field could result issues that someone with experience would've noticed and resolved much earlier or avoided completely.

Me with zero knowledge in architecture can "design" my house but I wouldn't trust my plan without someone looking at it.

AI and AGI provides great lengths in empowering but it might also introduce the false feeling of being capable.

Creativity, capability and motivation still takes important place even with AI.

rock_artist··on Afterglow: Run classic After Dark screen savers on modern macOS
In our age of mobile devices, especially with modern phones having always-on displays this nostalgic experience would’ve been appreciated on phones and watches. (They can even show up / start moving only after picking the device for battery concerns :) )

Anyway, the flying toasters has some meditation vibe. Even compared to screensavers back then.

Nice anecdote, With all the changes, screensavers have become less usable with screens being able to simply turn off pixels while toasters are still being used everyday.

rock_artist··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
It depends and also is culture based. In Spain you can find some places (eg coffee place) with 1-2 workers.

Sometimes it takes a lot of time to get your order at rush hours, but the culture tolerates patience and waiting.

rock_artist··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
There’s still one mystery for me.

I’m now at the iPhone 16. The performance of those chips with 8GB in non throttled environment (Neo..) can run as a fully performant macOS.

Yet, as a phone I don’t feel upgraded performance since my SE 1st gen days.

Sometimes I get stuttering, basic browsing can get the device pretty warm, sometime camera lags to launch.

My usage profile didn’t change much over the years.

So I can only assume codebases became more bloated, websites became more heavy on resources. Because, if my device now throttles to what I was happy with years ago assuming the software would behave the same, I’ve expected my usage to give me at least cooler non stuttering performance.

But that was never the case.

rock_artist··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
It's funny that at some point we'll have completely different tech and all those screens would look like old tech :)

Anyway, I have fiddled with it few times in stores.

* It feels nice form factor for holding. but the folded 'passport' screen still feels it's not yet caught by websites or apps.

* The claims are Apple is suspected of doing this form-factor (and as a display manufacturer I guess Samsung could sniff it...), meaning Samsung tried to be first. like the Galaxy Edge.

I guess the discussion over the form factor would be more valuable in a year or so after Apple drops their product. If enough actors has similar form factor, I'd expect designers to caught up with it.

rock_artist··on I hate packaging my software for Linux
I agree with the author. I've made nice cross-platform pro metronome (as some use timer which is bad)

https://tick.talaviram.com

Apple, Microsoft, Google - none is easy meaning you need to have Play store, certs, codesign, submit... But there are steps with few results making it easy for those platform to get the software.

I have tried my best getting also Linux but as the author said, there's nothing trivial (as my metronome GitHub issues can show https://github.com/talaviram/TICK/issues)

The name is exactly the tricky part... Linux has so many flavors. Even without installer, you have X server and Wayland and snap, AppImage, .deb each differ. add to that audio plug-in formats (CLAP, LV2, VST3) and the fact that some formats has no specific path for putting files.

For simple apps (not cli tools or ones aimed for package managers I start to think best is just providing an archive file (zip/tarball/etc)

While Linux is growing and is my goto for non-macOS, with so many releases, it still feels most users are more technical than other platforms. Add the LLM age where you can ask it to install it for you. a zip with binaries might be simplest for simple software.

rock_artist··on 2027 memory capacity is reportedly sold out
That's tech... Moore Law was steadily going until raw CPU got stuck for a few years, switching from single core to multicore then heterogeneous cpus, all those requiring to rewrite software in a scalable manner and then consider newer schedulers switching between performance/efficiency cores and changing CPU freqs.

Also, you have Meta and Google investing in simplified performant versions of their stack for developing countries which is similar.

What's funny though, I see people that sometimes says it's cheaper to build the app they need in a single prompt than to search for it.

rock_artist··on Microsoft Is Quietly Deleting Mentions of 32 GB RAM Recommendation for Win 11
I think that is a bold statement.

It depends on who’s promoting as well as the stack and the app and the complexity.

To be honest (no pun intended here), I’ve actually benefited from finding leaks and optimizing code paths by such tools. As long as something is measurable and testable you can benefit from AI. Worth mentioning, I mostly do C++ code at my work.

rock_artist··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
For non-graphene users (eg. Boring iPhone people like me).

So there’s a feature called Duress PIN which as explained through some comments means you put a different pin which intentionally wipes the phone. It’s not auto wipe or wipe after several failed attempts but intentional wipe of device. (Worth explanation as the current title nor the article doesn't easily explain this was made by the US citizen providing the alternative passcode)

For more technical details:

> GrapheneOS provides users with the ability to set a duress PIN/Password that will irreversibly wipe the device (along with any installed eSIMs) once entered anywhere where the device credentials are requested (on the lockscreen, along with any such prompt in the OS).

rock_artist··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
I'm not sure as others why others feel this is a major change.

OnePlus was always a subsidiary by Carl Pei [1] who eventually left the brand to create a new gadgets/tech company.

Nothing [2] is the next project he started that keeps many of the ideas started with OnePlus, good value for money and aim for quality Android.

Bootloader also seems to allow unlocking [3]

In recent years OnePlus was just another Chinese phone.

But if I've misunderstood something, I'll appreciate me being corrected.

rock_artist··on Reynard: A real Firefox web browser for iOS 13 or later
I wonder if there's simple way in the EU or markets that allow non-appstore to install this without TrollStore or something that needs to re-certificate each time.
rock_artist··on Show HN: Clawk – Give coding agents a disposable Linux VM, not your laptop
> Requires macOS 14+ on Apple silicon. (Linux is supported via firecracker and currently experimental...)

So should be noted it's mostly macOS out of the box with some Linux support if I understand right.

rock_artist··on Meta reuses old RAM in new servers with custom bridge chip
of course, but I was under the impression the real shortage is RAM mostly.
rock_artist··on Meta reuses old RAM in new servers with custom bridge chip
The interesting part of this "RAM crisis" is similar to other fields where a problem results multiple parties looking for alternative solutions.

This yields for exciting ideas or workarounds that might result a post-crisis memory boom (hopefully) also for local machines.

1. Lowest, Apple is evaluating new Chinese manufacturer which means change of supply demand if indeed it has reasonable QA. (https://www.ft.com/content/f4ac5c92-03be-4499-b16a-017a7e9ee...)

2. Companies tries to workaround performance - suddenly single channel is 'ok' ? :) (https://www.gigabyte.com/press/news/2403)

rock_artist··on List of European organizations that have banned personal messaging apps at work
I also didn't fully understand if the context is:

- Ban ANY use of your personal chats / device at work (eg. your wife texts you to bring milk on the way home)

- Ban WORK communication (eg. My colleague don't understand recent commit I've made)

So the web really isn't explaining how things enforced or what is being done. I do know of some industries where you put your personal phone when entering specific locations or having stickers on cameras) but here I didn't fully understood the scope.

I saw already lots of comments about Nintendo, but one interesting bit I didn't see yet in comments here is the fact Nintendo just raised base salary.
