robsinatra··on In praise of property-based testing
In praise of being paid to write unnecessary tests that break within hours after writing them and then spending hours incrementally fixing these tests as they break with every. fucking. commit
robsinatra··on Working for a startup makes less sense
Dunning and Kruger explained how people drastically overestimate their value. The author won't be earning what he thinks he deserves, isn't working on projects he thinks he deserves, and doesn't get the promotions he thinks he deserves wherever he goes. His reality may never change for him and that's his cross to carry.
robsinatra··on French executives convicted in the suicides of 35 of their workers
Executives at a French company couldn't treat people as resources and fire at will because France has employee protection laws (sounds good but only in theory). So, the executives made employees miserable, intending to push them to quit. Instead, employees killed themselves. You want to fire people but you can't, so what do you do? Make them not want to be there anymore.

There is a case to be made that these employees would have killed themselves if they were fired. This is an important distinction because it's the loss of employment, not harassment, that lead to suicide.

It's crazy to think that there are people here who will read this and think that with this given, firing should be illegal and executives charged for manslaughter. You are thinking dangerously and need to study history. Or, you are French and there is no difference.

robsinatra··on Share Now, formerly Car2Go, is leaving North America
You say this as if a government with the capacity would save the day? The government already has the capacity to solve problems but this is the best that it can achieve. This is it. It's not being held back because it only had a trillion dollar budget to work with.

Close enough
robsinatra··on Kansas City is first major city in U.S. to offer no-cost public transportation
Kansas was running on fumes for a long time by not taxing. Now, this? One group of idealists were replaced with another with no more sensibility than their counterparts.
robsinatra··on Amazon is now delivering half its own packages, rivaling FedEx and UPS
These are people who are competing with unionized drivers at UPS. Why feel any compassion towards them about their work conditions? They are only serving their own interests.
robsinatra··on What Happens After Prisoners Learn to Code?
I'm waiting for the moral grandstanders to take to social media and try to publicly shame companies for refusing to hire their trained ex-cons
robsinatra··on What Happens After Prisoners Learn to Code?
I'm unclear whether you're OK with spending other people's money but not your own. The fund supporting this initiative accepts donations. Have you donated? Have you volunteered? No, you haven't and you won't.
robsinatra··on Leadership behaviors that nurture collaboration are the true drivers of change
Going to MIT Sloan for an MBA won't transform your career but will put you deeply in debt
robsinatra··on Refinery: SQL Migration Toolkit for Rust
Rust doesn't seem to lend any advantages for this kind of tool, but I'm sure it took weeks to write (months?) rather than just a couple of hours. What can this do that bash scripts couldn't? This migration tool uses plain sql files. I'm not hating but questioning the use of a complicated language to do no more than what native shell scripts can, with ease.
robsinatra··on Hash – Complex Systems Simulation
Your comment looks like someone who wouldn't use the service even if you understood what simulations as a service actually were. You still get your moment to express a distrust of marketing copy and a chance to vent about bad decisions you've made in the past. Enjoy.
robsinatra··on California is about to allow former felons to serve on juries
They should require a former felon on every jury
robsinatra··on Brave Passes 10M Monthly Active Users, Sees 19% Growth Since 1.0 Launch
That is bullshit. Unless a trusted third party verifies this claim, it must be considered marketing lies and manipulation to encourage bandwagoning.

Galloway is trying to cash in on his cred from having a pulse and noticing the huge gaping goatse financial wreckage that is WeWork

robsinatra··on Amazon Dodges Responsibility for Unsafe Products
It's as if the Wall Street Journal has conveniently ignored how markets work and the legal system governing them so that it could target Amazon for something that no other reseller has responsibility for.
robsinatra··on Yes, And – How to be effective in the theatre of work
Before reading that article, I was intrigued by the hyperbolic title of the platform: American Greatness. My alt-right BS alarm was immediately triggered. So, I opened another article to get a feel for what it was about. A wave of unsubstantiated lies and storytelling that rivals anything published under Political Fiction.
robsinatra··on Novelty and Heresy
Paul Graham, Eric Ries, Steve Blank, Sam Altman, and many others have promoted their share of ideas that entrepreneurial and VC communities have latched onto as sacrosanct. Take, for instance, the notion of "minimum viable product". Do the absolute minimum of work to validate an idea because that way you didn't spend years of your life creating something that there was no market for. If you didn't go to market after 3 months of development, you're doing it wrong. If you didn't seek sage advice from a panel of... "experts"... trying to convince you why you should give up 10% of your life's work for $100,000, you're doing it wrong. If you take a principled approach to your work and do what is right rather than what is popular, you're doing it wrong. Ship as quickly as possible. Go fast. We need Velocity©! You don't need to do anything right, just focus on appearances. Generally speaking, whatever you're thinking and doing is wrong. They know what is best.

Herein lies the great dead zone of missed opportunities, rejected by venture capitalists and entrepreneurship thinkers who worked too hard to advance ideas that aren't universally applicable and in many cases are simply wrong.

robsinatra··on Ask HN: Anyone else in constant anxiety and how do you cope?
My dosage was ridiculously high after adjusting it many times over years. I was on maintenance mode for a long while, not really thinking about how I was feeling and just carrying on. Then, I finally took stock and realized I wasn't feeling emotionally well. It occurred to me that the way I felt at that time was very different from when I just started taking lexapro (it was a dramatic improvement and I was much brighter). I then spoke about my condition with my general physician who seemed to only have a comment about it after I brought it up, such as "yeah, that is a high dose". I felt disappointed in my doctor for not being proactive about it with me but maybe the doctor assumed I knew what worked best for my self.

I cut my dosage by 5mg every 3-5 months until where I am now (5mg). All the while, I supplemented with hemp cbd flower.

Be very careful about reducing dosage. You can get headaches and feel ill. Withdrawal symptoms are pretty bad. Reducing dosage may also have inadvertent psychological side effects. Speak with your doctor before you give it a try. I am not a physician. :)

robsinatra··on Ask HN: Anyone else in constant anxiety and how do you cope?
You must stop drinking alcohol. It is a depressant. You are literally making yourself feel worse. No amounts consumed in moderation are helpful. Stop, cold turkey. Don't wait to make this change, either, and try not to replace it with an alternative. If you absolutely must find a replacement, try vaping high-CBD hemp flower. I don't know what your country's legal status is for this, though, and that may not be possible. It can be mail ordered from the U.S. (see Tweedle Farms or Fields of Hemp).
robsinatra··on Ask HN: Anyone else in constant anxiety and how do you cope?
Lexapro worked for me until it didn't any more and then made my anxiety worse
robsinatra··on Ask HN: Anyone else in constant anxiety and how do you cope?
Please consider making time for therapy. See a psychologist who specializes in cognitive behavior therapy. Finding a doctor takes work and then dedicating time to see one takes even more so. However, this is the kind of effort that really pays off! Don't do nothing about how you feel. No one on HN can replace the sessions you'll have with a licensed therapist.
