robotrout··on America’s Need for Skilled Immigrants Isn’t Going Away
I"m not sure this should be a consideration. If that midwest company cannot compete, it should not exist. That is tghe essence of capitalism. You should not subsidize it by making it not compete fairly for H1B applicants.
robotrout··on Electrical properties of dendrites help explain our brain’s computing power
Any digital analogy fails, since the biological signals attenuate with distance from source. A digital gate acts as a repeater, re-boosting the signal strength to original level. That is not the case with neurons/dendrites.

Perhaps a better model would be for each neuron to be modeled as a current source instead of a voltage source. The more parallel paths that current is funneled into, the smaller it gets, until it is below the threshold of detection. You can have your transistor model allowing/blocking that current, but never boosting it back up.

robotrout··on DRM for chargers? Google Pixel 3 locks fast Qi charging to its own stand
Your logic allows me to lock up all hardware in an Applesqe way and get praised for my altruism as I pocket hundreds of millions in extra peripheral sales.

The world has gotten this far with standards that allow equipment from different manufacturers to function together in a system. What a shame if marketing people and greed destroys that ecosystem.

That was a very educational tweet steam. I hadn't heard of 2/3rds of the issues he raised.
robotrout··on New Evidence of Hacked Supermicro Hardware Found in U.S. Telecom
There was mention of one being discovered buried inside the FR4 PCB material.
robotrout··on Shutting Down Google+ for Consumers
Not me. But it reinforces my commitment to never get attached to any Google service.

The new GMail is also helping me with that.

robotrout··on The Tyranny of the U.S. Dollar
Inflation can indeed be caused by supply and demand, which is what you're referring to. However, if an open market is allowed (no price controls), generally supply will rise to meet demand and price will fall back.

Unfortunately, inflation can also occur when too much money floods a system. We see this in the case of college tuition. Giving college loans to anybody with a heartbeat floods the system with money, causing tuition price inflation.

This does happen with countries as well. Every dollar that a government borrows and then spends, is money creation. The act of selling the treasury notes allows them to obtain money today for the promise of paying it back with interest in the future. That new money is spent into the system and much of it takes the form of bank deposits which can then be inflated 10:1.

> nobody's falling for the lies. They're too transparent.

I would be pleased if you did not personally insult those who you are speaking to.

The lack of evidence is a farce, since any attempts to collect such evidence are met with stonewalling and refusal by democratically controlled local and state government.

In 2014, a study released by a team of professors from Old Dominion University and George Mason University estimated that approximately 6.4 percent of noncitizens voted In the 2008 presidential election. (Versus 56% of legal citizens voting)

As immigration reform becomes more and more of an issue, there is incentive for that 6.4 percent number to further increase, and indeed it may have in 2016, but that data is proving hard to pry loose. Since there are 11 million illegals in the US by the lowest estimate (high estimates are 20 million) this is not a non-problem.

As for the disenfranchisement canard. Even Nate Silver acknowledges it's non-validity. Silver has noted, this argument doesn’t make sense because the vast majority of adults in America hold some form of photo identification and states with voter ID laws offer qualifying documentation at minimal or no cost.

robotrout··on Voting Machine Used in Half of U.S. Is Vulnerable to Attack, Report Finds
Nonsense. We've been asking for voter id for years and you've been opposing it for years. Why is that? You talk about conspiracy theories. This notion that there is this huge population of legal, eligible voters who are functioning in our society without ID is ludicrous.

But if you want to implement paper ballots across the board at the same time, or even 1st, than let's make that happen. As you say, any progress is better than none. Since you are obstructing voter id and not obstructing paper ballots (I assume), than by all means, let's do that first.

robotrout··on Voting Machine Used in Half of U.S. Is Vulnerable to Attack, Report Finds
I will support any system that insures that all voters have verified citizenship.
robotrout··on Voting Machine Used in Half of U.S. Is Vulnerable to Attack, Report Finds
I'm sure their friendly neighborhood community organizer will charter a bus for them to get their ID cards. If they're citizens, there will be somebody who wants their vote badly enough to walk them through that process and even buy them a sandwich for their trouble.

Let's join the rest of the world and make sure that the people voting in our elections are citizens. Community organizers have proven to be extremely effective at getting voters to the polls. If a preliminary step is for them to get them their card, I'm sure they won't flinch from that duty.

robotrout··on Voting Machine Used in Half of U.S. Is Vulnerable to Attack, Report Finds
I prefer a physical thing that somebody has to physically steal, hide, replace, destroy. Something that can be signed for, locked up, and monitored with cameras for years after an election.

Computers are about convenience. Elections are important enough to do things the hard way.

Paper gives you natural decentralization. Computers will tend to be purchased from and serviced by a small number of companies.

Paper please.

robotrout··on Ex-Google Employee Urges Lawmakers to Take on Company
No, it removes them from one, since the decision is made by the state, not by hubby and brother. Also, appeasement is not the answer. This fundamentalist backslide that has occurred over the last 40 years must be confronted, not encouraged. Liberals of the future will look back at how liberals of today are embracing this oppression with horror and disgust.
robotrout··on Ex-Google Employee Urges Lawmakers to Take on Company
That's sad that liberals consistently condemn christian fundamentalism but never fail to coddle Muslim fundamentalism out of some misguided liberal virtue signalling. Muslim women had it much better 40 years ago. Why are liberals so quick to side with their oppressors?

robotrout··on Ex-Google Employee Urges Lawmakers to Take on Company
I applaud France's action here. Should have done it earlier. These women are often forced to wear such garments or face severe retribution from their fundamentalist communities. Making it illegal allows them a similar loophole that a US law not permitting US companies to implement surveillance programs would allow US companies. It takes the option off the table without inciting retribution against the women or the companies.

robotrout··on The Justice Dept's secret rules for targeting journalists with FISA court orders
What reasons exactly?

Will the governments being dissuaded from influencing ours include allies such as Saudi Arabia, Israel and the UK? Or will it just be Russia, Iran, and China?

I would personally be in favor of stopping our allies from influencing our government as they do it constantly and blatantly. If you influence it enough, perhaps that's how you become an ally in the first place and how you remain as one.

robotrout··on How to Tell Us a Secret
I did a 10 second google. Here's a couple where the NYT issued their little correction as unobtrusively as possible, which happens often, after they enjoy the click-bait traffic the erroneous story give them.

Small print corrections issued days later, are not effective in undoing the damage an erroneous blaring headline did.

robotrout··on How Puerto Rico Became a Tax Haven for the Super Rich
Exactly. Price controls result in famines and shortages.

Allow gouging, and the gouger will soon have competition to drive the price down. Very quickly, the price will drop to a reasonable level. Conversely, if you price control, there is no incentive to provide the good or service in the first place, and shortages ensue.

Government price control regulations distort markets in a dangerous way.

robotrout··on Evernote just slashed 54 jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce
I would love an opensource replacement for Evernote. But it must allow me to clip images into it. Life is not always just text, and most of the programs that people claim they use to replace Evernote are text only.

Evernote also allows me to embed PDFs (or any file really), which is nice, but as a minimum spec, I insist on the ability to drop in images.

robotrout··on $250 Trillion in Debt: The World’s Post-Lehman Legacy
The last 10 years of "recovery" have themselves been on the back of more and more credit and leverage. Pointing to them as some sort of proof that the system is not fragile is an error. The system has much more debt than it did in 2007 and is more fragile than ever. The stock market recovery that comforts you was partially due to central banks such as the BOJ and SNB actually buying stocks. That is not normal. What happens if they need to unwind those positions?

Sometimes people discuss things at a systemic level, rather than a personal level. The person you are lecturing to deleverage may be debt free, with $5M in Gold in a vault, but still be wistful of a less fragile world economic system.

robotrout··on Japan starts space elevator experiments
The rails? The car will travel over a stationary structure, not be pulled up by a pulley like a conventional elevator is. So it is failure of that stationary structure that we are talking about.
robotrout··on Why do women live longer than men?
The whole "life expectancy" calculation which takes into account infant mortality, death by accident, death by childbirth, death by violence, etc., seems to cloud the issue that most people are more interested in, which is "death by aging".

Do women tend to get older than men? Yes they do, and talking about non-age related causes of death, such as the article does, just confuses the issue. Such a question should ignore non-aging causes of death that skew the statistics such as death in childbirth and infant mortality in earlier eras.

Women often complain that men lose weight easier than they do, and that men don't get cold as easy as women. Both of these point to generally faster metabolisms for men, which I would think would cause men to "burn out" their bodies earlier.

robotrout··on NYU Makes Tuition Free for All Medical Students
As the supply of available money increases, there is no incentive not to increase tuition. Any system that is flooded with money experiences price inflation.

Because students are not able to discharge their debt in bankruptcy, they constitute a riskless loan opportunity to the lenders, who throw money at them.

A sad side-effect of this as that the price inflation that this causes is forcing more and more students who might have otherwise been able to finance their tuition without loans, into needing loans also, thus dooming more and more of the next generation into huge debts that will effect their ability to buy houses, start families, and save for retirement.

Nice that your mom got better with her breast cancer. I'm sure you know that a lot of breast cancer "survivors" are victims of an over hyped mammogram screening that calls any lump, no matter how slow growing, "cancer". Whether that's what your mom had or not, it's still scary though. [1]

My mom died of ovarian cancer after living a lifestyle that even you would approve of. Victim shaming pisses me off.

Shaming the victim with this lifestyle bullshit is not productive, and neither is minimizing people who actually search for cures rather than preaching lifestyle.

[1] https://www.bmj.com/content/348/bmj.g366

robotrout··on Liquid water 'lake' revealed on Mars
OK. You tell your mom that, after she's gotten cancer, asshole. How did her lifestyle cause her cancer in her ovaries (another inflammation caused cancer), I wonder?

While you're chastising your mom for her lifestyle, the rest of us will be looking/hoping for a cure.

You should know that even you will experience increased and chronic inflammation as you age, no matter how much better than your mom, your lifestyle is. Increased chronic inflammation and aging are linked and we're still trying to understand why.

robotrout··on Liquid water 'lake' revealed on Mars
Yes, there are many causes. We are in violent agreement. If you focus on the causes, you are preventing cancer, not curing it. You are playing whack-a-mole.
robotrout··on Is America Encouraging the Wrong Kind of Entrepreneurship? (2017)
What if your product never gets built, because you are unwilling/unable to navigate the legal and regulatory barriers that have been set up to keep you out?

Not many startups do medical devices. Everybody knows why not. Many other industries are just as walled off.

robotrout··on Liquid water 'lake' revealed on Mars
Cancer is often caused when tissue is damaged and needs to heal or try to heal itself repeatedly (inflammation).

Sunburn, smoking, chewing tobacco, HPV, acid reflux, can all cause cancer. Saying those are all different cancers that require different cures is a good way to waste a lot of effort and money. It is more accurate to say that inflammation is a cause for cancer, and focus on that.
