robotnikman··on I have a theory that software drives people insane
Man I wish I was born 20 years earlier so I could be working in the golden age of developers like this (and also buy a home at a decent price)
robotnikman··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
>This reminds me of a mod for Rimworld that adds in other people's failed colonies and decays the structure making a real ruins from other people's playthroughs of the game. Awesome concept

This sounds like it would be a great mod for Factorio. Adds other players factories but in a dilapidated and decayed state.

robotnikman··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
I actually created a Minecraft server plugin a long time ago which did this. It allowed server owners to create their own dungeons/buildings/etc and they would generate randomly in the world. It even supported custom procedural generated dungeons and structures.

I feel like this is where AI would come in handy. An AI can get a lot more 'creative' than a procedural generation algorithm.
robotnikman··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
Thats the nice thing about alternate frontends like Nitter, if the main instance goes down you can just clone the repo and make your own very easily, or choose from one of the many alternate instances out there.

I highly recommend the extension libredirect, which will redirect you to instances of your choice (or just stick with the defaults). It doesn't just work for Twitter/X, but also Reddit, Tiktok, Youtube, and many others

robotnikman··on A practical guide to running 8x RTX PRO 6000's
My bad, didn't mean to derail things with my little quip, for what its worth I did read the article and it was an interesting read. Overall I do hope for more smaller models in the future which I can run on my 3090 that deliver similar performance, or for hardware costs to drop in the next few years to prosumer levels.
robotnikman··on How the Tobacco Industry Drove the Rise of Ultra-Processed Foods (2025)
Not sure why this comment by KurSix is marked dead:

>What stands out to me is that the real transfer wasn't a specific ingredient or recipe, it was institutional knowledge: how to engineer repeat consumption and then market the hell out of it

But this really is the gist of it. The execs from the Tobacco industry saw the writing on the wall, and moved over to the food industry where the knowledge of making things addictive to consume was applied to food.

robotnikman··on I wanna live an NPC life
>Being nothing special is quite different.

Related, I would also recommend the book "The courage to be disliked"

robotnikman··on A practical guide to running 8x RTX PRO 6000's
Now if only I could afford 8 RTX PRO 6000's
robotnikman··on 'Mad honey' that can stop your heart is being sold online
>Eat a teaspoonful, and you might feel pleasantly warm and slightly lightheaded. Eat more than a few tablespoons, and your heart rate can drop to life-threatening levels.

Reminds me of the Futurama episode with the space bee honey. Wonder if the writers got the inspiration from this.

robotnikman··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
IIRC a decade ago Samsung smart TV's were found doing this.
robotnikman··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
Another reason to use your own Wifi router and modem
robotnikman··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
>You know what? There's really nothing good to watch on TV anyways. If Hollywood has to subsidize the television industry just to keep its base, it doesn't have any money to invest in anything new. Every channel just wants to brainwash you. So throwing the Flat Panel into the garbage might be a good idea anyways.

Definitely have to agree with the author on that. Only use for a TV for me is for playing on the Steam Machine.

robotnikman··on Interactive Warhammer 40k Galaxy Map
As a big W40K fan, holy shit this is awesome!
robotnikman··on Windows 95 released August 24, 1995
I still have nostalgia for Window 95 and 98, they were the OS's I grew up with as a kid

robotnikman··on The Dutch community where people live on strips of land in a lake
I wish I could live there, seems like the perfect spot.
robotnikman··on Mark Zuckerberg attacks 'closed' AI rivals as Meta returns to open models
I saw a report recently that they are behind 80% of the lobbying for age gate laws in the US. Obviously for their benefit.
robotnikman··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
This time its the entire white collar industry though. The scale of job displacement will be at a scale never seen before. If there are no societal safety nets in place for this then I can see things going south quickly
robotnikman··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
There's a reason why people either stick to Win32 or go with something like Electron when it comes to making Windows apps.
robotnikman··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
Compared to the old Win32 apps and settings menus of Windows Server, the Azure web interface is a disaster.
robotnikman··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
I encountered bugs when it first released even with a decent PC. IIRC there was a mission where you were running away in a truck, and it would crash every time at a certain point so I could never complete it. Also the whole save file size limit debacle, where they never actually removed deleted items from your inventory and the save file would reach a certain size that the game could no longer read (10mb or something like that)

I've always felt the elimination of their QA department once the current CEO came in is what really started the decline in quality. Now they are being called Microslop for good reason.
robotnikman··on Parody Hacker News (2013)
Speaking of Hacker News parodies, I wonder what happened to n-gate. They stopped updating their site around 2021
robotnikman··on Bitcoin trail, Google cookies and Uber Eats orders help tie man to Steam malware
>Why didn't he just try find a job that pays $200k/year ?

Probably was not able to get into MIT or another prestigious school that many of those companies look for on a resume.

robotnikman··on A 77-year-old Republican man is staging a solo protest against Flock cameras
Indeed, I'm happy too see the majority of people are united on this issue.
robotnikman··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
Window 7 was the apex of Windows as an OS. Its been downhill since then.

robotnikman··on Critical Minerals: Reducing U.S. Import Reliance with Substitution and Recycling
I hope its less because of war and more because its better to not be so dependent on other countries, similar to how Europe is trying to rely less on the US for digital infrastructure.

I also feel like the boomers offshoring everything to China in the 70's is one of the reasons things are worse off nowadays, but I digress.
