robotmlg··on Employee #1: Apple
I always liked this story, also from Andy Hertzfeld: http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?story=Negative_2000_Lin...
robotmlg··on Employee #1: Apple
I know, and it's a great series. I just always liked this story about Jobs.
robotmlg··on Employee #1: Apple
Technically speaking, Woz was employee #1 and Jobs was employee #2, although Jobs assigned himself #0 and always had 0 printed on his badge.
robotmlg··on America’s Last Top Model
Ah, I remember this model from the episode of Mythbusters where they escape from Alcatraz. They used the model to test potential routes across the bay.
robotmlg··on The Apple Goes Mushy Part I: OS X's Interface Decline
In the sphere of "talks," I know TED puts a big round carpet on stage that you're supposed to stay on while speaking. More generally for "carpets on stage," I've seen some smaller music venues and studios with carpets to make a nicer area for performers and to absorb unwanted sound (in the case of studios)
robotmlg··on The future is fewer people writing code?
People seemed to like Scratch [1] a lot a few years ago. Haven't heard much about it since, but IIRC it can switch between flowchart and text mode.

robotmlg··on Grace Hopper explains nanoseconds [video]
Just buy a spool of wire, a ruler, and some wire cutters and cut your own!
robotmlg··on Riffle: an efficient communication system with strong anonymity
Yeah, I saw that and wondered if my comment was the inspiration for that post :-)
robotmlg··on Riffle: an efficient communication system with strong anonymity
The name reminds me of the Solitaire cipher from Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, which is calculated using a deck of playing cards: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solitaire_(cipher)
robotmlg··on Happy ManhattanHenge
It does happen at sunrise, just on different dates, around the Winter solstice
robotmlg··on As Online Video Surges, Publishers Turn to Automation
NWS actually stopped using all-caps in its forecasts back in May: http://www.noaa.gov/national-weather-service-will-stop-using...

Can a US court order compel you to provide your nose print?
robotmlg··on Are we getting enough sulfur in our diet? (2007)
I consider that to be at least partially cooked. Enough to destroy the anti-nutrients? I dunno.
robotmlg··on Are we getting enough sulfur in our diet? (2007)
Good thing no one eats raw eggs then
robotmlg··on Show HN: AutoMicroFarm Is Ready for Shipping
Cool, thanks
robotmlg··on Show HN: AutoMicroFarm Is Ready for Shipping
What about the soil? I'm no botanist, but does the fact that you're using sand affect the types of plants that grow well?
robotmlg··on TP-Link forgets to renew two domains used to connect to its networking devices
It's not supposed to be a public domain. They use the domain for the router's internal config page. So instead of going to 192.168.1.1 to configure your router, you can go to tplinklogin.net. Of course, if they don't own the domain, a malicious actor can set it up as an actual public website, where they can phish for router login passwords and such.
robotmlg··on Wanted: Ninja Rockstar Code Monkey Hacker Unicorn
I'm betting "Yes you’ll get all the usual benefits, but if you’re really going for perks, Google is your best bet! If you want to make an impact, then please apply." and "We’ll have a large variety of alcohol in the office as well as an assortment of video games for the perfect frat environment" are the two sentences from real job descriptions
robotmlg··on Reusing Abandoned Big-Box Superstores Across America
The bathrooms in Snow Crash are full bathrooms with showers and such. Plus you can pay more and get the super-deluxe bathroom with plush towels and an attendant.
robotmlg··on GoToMyPC has been hacked, all customer passwords reset
Gmail doesn't need any config. Add whatever you want to your usual email after a + and it'll just work
robotmlg··on Autonomous Mini Rally Car Teaches Itself to Powerslide
When they announced RoboRace, I was fully hyped, but lately I've grown skeptical. The season is supposed to start in October, but they just announced that the cars would be powered by NVidia chips in April, and they still haven't announced the 10 participating teams, with less than 5 months to go...
robotmlg··on Tesla Model X owners finding car doors won’t shut, windows won’t close
> And figure out where a piece of plastic that popped off a chair is supposed to go.

This has happened in every car my family has owned for the past 20 years. Some piece of plastic appears on the floor one day and not even the dealer knows where it's supposed to go. We always keep them in the glovebox in case we figure it out some day.

robotmlg··on Space X lands Falcon 9 stage 1 on drone ship (picture)
That was mostly the audience that showed up to watch the launch, not so much the SpaceX team
robotmlg··on I stayed in a hotel with Android lightswitches and it was as bad as you'd think
What would you consider a good IOT company?
robotmlg··on I stayed in a hotel with Android lightswitches and it was as bad as you'd think
> It's easy to build it in a way so that the worst that the software can do is cause it to turn into a "dumb" fridge.

If it's so easy, why don't more companies do it? Why didn't Nest build their thermostats so that when the battery runs out, it reverts to a "dumb" thermostat instead of turning off your heat? http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jan/15/bug-nest-t...

robotmlg··on 52-hertz whale
They're still order cetacea though, which is then split into baleen whales and toothed whales, which is where dolphins and orcas are found.
robotmlg··on “Me”: The one word journalists should add to Twitter searches
Thank you for de-clickbaiting the title
robotmlg··on Soon You'll Hate Group Chat as Much as You Hate E-mail
> In future Group chat may evolve to be Slow-First, instead of Fast-First: Present an email style interface - no chat context, lots of white space, Subject line, etc. Then if you are both online and the recipient(s) respond quickly, dump the email stream into a chat window.

Wasn't this the one of the central ideas of Google Wave?

robotmlg··on Virginia Tech Professor Spent $147k to Help Uncover the Flint Water Scandal
I met Marc Edwards in 2010. when I did a summer program at Virginia Tech. One of the most passionate people you'll ever meet. The big news then was water contamination in D.C. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_contamination_in_Washingt...), another project that Edwards spent much of his personal funds on. Fortunately then, his work earned him a MacArthur Genius Grant in 2007, helping him to pay back his debt.
robotmlg··on Ask HN: Good programmable robot kit for teens?
The NQC implementation for the new Mindstorms kits hasn't been updated since 2011: http://bricxcc.sourceforge.net/nbc/

A better and more up-to-date C implementation for Mindstorms is RobotC: http://robotc.net
