Then I took another look on the aws pages, and, hooray: elastic ip's were introduced yesterday!
Coming from PHP, you'll probably see some benefits right away.

Rails is just a pain.
Python has a longer history on the web. Give cherrypy a try, which, although not as powerful as Rails, is lightning fast.
Was kind of hard to get into though last time I looked, probably better now.

It's definitely ok to release an alpha that only works in a certain browser, but make sure you tell people, and be prepared to cut some people off.
How would you determine that though?
I have my doubts that approaching this by finding some kind of formula on people-attributes will work.
I believe it is best for me to say who I work well with.
What is needed is a collective intelligence augmentation tool. Which the internet basically is, but how can it be improved? I.e. what we really need is more, and more relevant information at my fingertips.
Is there a modern implementation that's well supported by a community?
Would I use something like a wsgi webserver, that runs as a daemon, and occasionally dumps the data structure to disk?
Or is something like memcached better?
My preferred way of storing into RAM would be of course only storing changes, instead of storing the whole tree into RAM on every write.
I figure 2 GB will last me 4 months. Then I can go up to 4, 8, 16, ...
