robjan··on The 'Quiet Quitting' Phenomenon
Work to rule is more deliberate though and usually involves using company policies against them. e.g this situation happened in HK where the bus drivers, who are usually very efficient, went upstairs after every stop and checked that everyone was safely seated before setting off. The result was gridlock and increased journey times. QQ is more about refusing to go above an beyond.
robjan··on Is engineering management bullshit?
In the scrum guide, the scrum master is considered to have a management role. Although it's a management role, I don't believe it's a people management role. That's what the Engineering Manager does and ideally they wouldn't be attending the scrum.
robjan··on Euro falls below parity with the dollar
Borrowing becomes more expensive so it reduces the amount of cash sloshing around.
robjan··on American Airlines agrees to purchase Boom Supersonic Overture aircraft
A few years ago BA specifically excluded the idea of supersonic travel because you can provide a much more comfortable sleeper service at a similar price while making more profit.
robjan··on How to Delete Gmail Attachments Without Deleting the Emails
Emails are just text files including the headers, contents and encoded attachments. Unless they are digitally signed (usually not the case) it's trivial to edit.
robjan··on Is this the end of social networking?
I'm from Hong Kong. English is pretty widely used here.

Tried to download the app but it seems to be geo-restricted
robjan··on How and why to host a blog at home
Yunohost packages aren't updated regularly enough with security patches.
robjan··on GraphQL kinda sucks
It could be the contrived example, but REST URIs are supposed to represent resources, not UI pages or elements. When the endpoints start to become coupled to the UI the backend can get messy, as you described, very quickly.
robjan··on A Love Letter to Geocities Sites
I think it was called "Mastering HTML4.0" or "HTML4.0 No Experience Required" if that narrows down your search. I also remember checking this book out from a library in my teens.
robjan··on PiBox: a tiny personal server for self-hosting
"value proposition" is about how you demonstrate the value.
robjan··on Librarian's Letter to Google Security
I wonder if that's deliberate. My bank also accepted an email utility bill but they said they only ask for the utility bill to prove that you didn't make a careless mistake when entering your address.
robjan··on IPv6 Only Cloud Server
Looking at the ASN of this company, it would appear they are reselling Hetzner nodes with IPv4 disabled.
robjan··on What happens when a reservoir goes dry
In Hong Kong, 80% of homes flush with seawater [0]. It's provided for free by the government to encourage people to connect to that supply rather than the drinking water supply. I'm sure this can be done elsewhere.

robjan··on Americans still think they can make money flipping houses
In that scenario the value is going up relative to the currency the property was purchased in but that's because the value of the currency is diminished.
robjan··on Life Stats
I think this one is a lot less positive
robjan··on As eng manager, you so frequently get request to drop what you are doing
If the backlog keeps growing either the tickets aren't important or you need to grow your capacity through additional headcount or vendors. As a manager it's your job to communicate the implications of both.
robjan··on Laundry symbols make no sense
What happens when the garment manufacturer or the URL shortener they used to reduce the complexity of the QR code goes out of business? I've experienced this before.
robjan··on Cheat sheet for if I'm gone
If the owner of the website dies, the site may shut down due to not paying the bills.
robjan··on Toxic Productivity
Most Olympians train less than 40 hours per week. Yes, they make some sacrifices, such as not having that ice cream or drinking water at the bar but it's very possible (and normal) to have a life outside training.

Besides, nobody's gonna sponsor a boring Olympian.

UK passports are very much valid for entry to the US and do not contain fingerprints

> The International Civil Aviation Organisation recommendations for biometric standards include a digitised photograph embedded on a chip in the passport. Countries wishing to stay in the US Visa Waiver programme have had to start issuing biometric passports in line with these international recommendations.

The UK passport contains a digitised photograph which meets the ICAO requirement and is therefore valid for entry into the US without a visa.

The UK passport does not contain fingerprints. This is one of the opt-outs the UK received when it was in the EU.

robjan··on I've locked myself out of my digital life
We were talking about our UK passports not having biometric data contained within them. The US and UK are different countries.
robjan··on I've locked myself out of my digital life
UK passports don't have fingerprints. The only biometric data is depth information calculated from the photo you provide.

robjan··on Don't send to Gmail over IPv6
That's sort of how Gmail does work in my experience. Once there is evidence of an account replying to email from a "less reputable" domain / IP, they tend to let all follow-up correspondence through.

The problem is that people managing their own server wouldn't be able to initiate conversations with people who give them business cards, for example.
