Hong Kong based fintech guy.

Any views were my own at the particular point in time in which they were expressed.

robjan··on Managers exploit loyal workers over less committed colleagues
Guy 2 sold more of his time and compromised his health and personal life by working 50+ hour weeks. He probably also made more mistakes than guy 1 because he wasn't well rested. Nobody got screwed out of comp but their manager who values bums on seats.

robjan··on Microsoft 365 Copilot – your copilot for work
In any sensible organisation the manager will be the accountable party regardless of whether the frontline staff are human or AI.
robjan··on HSBC to Buy UK Arm of Silicon Valley Bank
The full name is still printed on most of our banknotes (alongside Bank of China and Standard Chartered who issue a smaller number of notes). I think it's just the parent company who deleted the original meaning.
robjan··on HSBC to Buy UK Arm of Silicon Valley Bank
HSBC is a British bank with most of the profits being made in Asia (specifically Hong Kong). They may be selling off their unprofitable subsidiaries but the UK operations are pretty stable.
robjan··on Urgent: Sign the petition now
The ceiling for coked up bank managers is orders of magnitude higher than 120k.
robjan··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
Wouldn't a preface achieve a similar outcome without changing the original work? The conversation about things having changed is valuable as it demonstrates how society is progressing.
robjan··on Portugal proposes to end Golden Visas, curtail Airbnb rentals
It really depends on where you move. I would never move to suburban America, for example, because of what you mentioned. But if you're young(ish) and/or don't have too many family commitments it's pretty easy to find a hobby based or cultural community in most cities.
robjan··on Bing ChatGTP demands an apology from user for claiming it's 2023
It's interesting that Bing always uses a list of three adjectives to describe both itself and the user.

robjan··on Ask HN: Is anyone successfully self-hosting Firefox Sync?
If Firefox is backdoored, as per GP's hypothetical situation, your data can be sent to a sync server other than the one you configured.

The only realistic way to stop it would be to only use a specific audited version of FF. If that's the case then there's no need to use your own sync server because you already know it's not backdoored.

robjan··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
I find Brave slower than Chrome on my phone even on sites filled with ads.
robjan··on Intel Cuts Employee Pay to Maintain Quarterly Dividend
I have a feeling that increases in foreign investors also discouraged companies from issuing dividends. For example, I pay 0% capital gains tax but have to pay the US government (where I have never stepped foot) 30% on dividends.
robjan··on Japanese explained to programmers
Chinese characters/Kanji are typically monospaced and characters are written within a box.
robjan··on Ask HN: How to Deal with ChatGPT Anxiety?
A few years ago everyone was saying that low code tools and "citizen development" will destroy the industry. The reality was that they just allowed more small players to increase their efficiency / productivity. We're still here today.

As an additional moat, any non-trivial business has a lot of context and tacit knowledge that will not be within the corpus of "knowledge" that AI models have and there will be many non-technical hurdles (regulatory, political etc) before any of that business context can be fed into the model, if ever. Remember these models only have access to public information at this point in time.

robjan··on Ask HN: Is it just me or is 5G strictly worse than LTE?
I use 5G home broadband because I live in an old building with rusty DOCSIS 2 cables (and also because there was a risk of being sent to quarantine camp in recent years). I get a very stable 200mbit connection and can ping Google with 5-7ms latency.

Note that I live in one of the most busy parts of Hong Kong so YMMV elsewhere. In case anyone's interested, I'm using SmarTone which is the only provider in HK offering unlimited full speed 5G

robjan··on Japan has changed in important and visible ways
This is my point. Japanese people can have multiple citizenships but in order for a foreigner to gain Japanese citizenship, they must renounce at least one of their other citizenships to fulfil the "single citizenship" criteria.
robjan··on Slack is the opposite of organizational memory (2018)
Teams creates knowledge siloes which is worse than Slack. Every company I have used ends up with people creating various "Teams" and channels under them, then everyone just creates group chats all the time because it's easier.
robjan··on Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem?
In the case you're describing, the hypothetical person is going into the hobby for the wrong reason. The primary objective should be the hobby, if you happen to find someone you get on well with all the better.

robjan··on Amazon job cuts: Read the memos
I used to work in a unionised engineering department. There were benefits, such as being hard to lay off large amounts of the workforce. There were also disadvantages, such as collective bargaining which meant high performers generally weren't rewarded and salaries were generally below market.
robjan··on Plant-based meat is turning out to be a flop
I think it depends on the restaurant, I'm definitely not the kind of person who goes to nood food, Mana or the other upper-middle class restaurants where plant based is in their branding.

We have restaurants which are quick, cheap eats (Cha Chaan Tengs and other fast food) and restaurants where you can sit down an talk for a bit. The latter is what I am referring to. Saying that, even CCT chains like Cafe de Coral and MX are starting to introduce these options and these lower end restaurants are the companies that OmniFoods have been targeting with their partnerships. They are also on the permanent menus of McCafe and KFC these days.

I've also noticed that Park n Shop and Wellcome now have dedicated plant based option freezers.

robjan··on Plant-based meat is turning out to be a flop
Same in Hong Kong. Recently Impossible, Beyond and (our local equivalent) OmniFoods have been introduced to almost all restaurant menus. It's died down a bit, but still quite popular. And this is the place with the highest meat consumption per capita in the world.
