robinson-wall··on Why Monzo's bank transfers weren't working on the 30th of May
It's used exclusively inside the Gateway's infrastructure. They're a mix of Java and Erlang but I'm not sure on the proportion.

FPS uses ISO8583 for its messaging format, and I suspect at the edge the Gateway translates it to a BERT blob for passing around internally.

Ah "any more technical questions"... except this one.

Sorry, but I can't name our partner.

robinson-wall··on Why Monzo's bank transfers weren't working on the 30th of May
Yeah, instead of `20190530` we were getting `['bert', 'time', 1559, 238096, 0]`. My understanding is a race condition put the code into a situation where it couldn't determine how to format that field, and we just got a default string representation of the underlying value.
robinson-wall··on Why Monzo's bank transfers weren't working on the 30th of May
I just posted this semi-technical post-mortem on Monzo's about why we had an outage with Faster Payments (UK bank transfers) last Month.

I'll hang around here to answer any more technical questions if anyone's interested.

robinson-wall··on The death of a TLD
My HN username is my surname... so naturally I snapped up https://nick.rw/

I wondered if they'd refuse it, for being close to "nic.rw" but they don't seem to use it.

robinson-wall··on How to become a bank (2016)
We have just one Scala service - it's not a language we use day to day.

We're almost entirely Go, but do use other languages where it makes sense to - usually because there's a useful library, or great tooling / community for a particular use case. For example we have a handful of Python services for ML.

robinson-wall··on How to become a bank (2016)
It doesn’t have to be this way - e.g. https://monzo.com/terms/

Disclaimer: I work for Monzo

robinson-wall··on Server room with seismic isolation floor in Japan earthquake disaster [video]
Depends which aisle you're in :)
robinson-wall··on Blockchains are the new Linux, not the new Internet
How is Proof of Stake useful in an interbank network though? My understanding of PoS is that everyone wants to follow the same chain because the interest payments on your stake make it beneficial to you to accept a new block. Presumably there wouldn't be anything to stake in a private blockchain.
robinson-wall··on Realtime Bitcoin
This is part of the reason behind efforts like moving Ethereum to Proof of Stake instead of Proof of Work.

> I remember getting pinged quite regularly over the course of 2 years of people asking in a support thread

Unfortunately, this is standard for all Atlassian products. Years ago I naively subscribed and +1ed a few "I can't believe this is not possible" style issues, occasionally I see a hopeless soul adding another "still no update?" comment.

robinson-wall··on Keybase is out for iPhone, Android
Can I confirm my understanding? In my graph https://keybase.io/nickrw/graph if I lost the key "panya" I would still be able to use either of my other two device keys to add another device, even though they are child nodes?
robinson-wall··on Apple acquires sleep tracking company Beddit
Sometimes not if I'm quick or it's been used for exercise tracking the day before, but by "shower" I really mean "morning routine". Take it off when I get out of bed and then put it on as I leave the house for work. It's always at 100% in that case, and I'd guess it's usually charging for 45 minutes to an hour.
robinson-wall··on Apple acquires sleep tracking company Beddit
Specifically for the Apple watch, people did with the original, but the newest model has enough battery to survive longer than 24 hours. I sleep with mine on for (3rd party) sleep tracking and charge it while I'm in the shower.

Anyone confused about what parent's comment is quoting, this HN link was originally pointing to http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-39856391
robinson-wall··on Traceroute Mapper – Show Your Traceroute on a Map
Someone has set up the routing to 162.252.205.157 so that it passes through many other address which they control (162.252.205.130 through to .157) the reverse DNS for, and customised them in the appropriate order:

robinson-wall··on Man jailed indefinitely for refusing to decrypt hard drives loses appeal
The problem is it feels like they're using this case, where the guy is obviously guilty, to set a precedent despite having enough evidence to convict him already.

Maybe next time they won't have evidence, but there's a handy encrypted drive to get someone with instead.

robinson-wall··on Happiness report: Norway is the happiest place on earth
Money can't buy happiness... but not having to worry about money buys less stress.
robinson-wall··on Syncthing Usage Data
Interesting drop in the numbers when version 0.12 was released. Does anyone know what that was about?
robinson-wall··on Monzo: All payments are failing temporarily
Was it contactless? I've found staff really aren't used to online contactless transactions which can decline, they just take the "card read successfully" beep to mean transaction approved.

I've (accidentally) had a free dinner once when I used a locked prepaid card and neither me or the staff behind the bar noticed that it declined.

robinson-wall··on I spent three months working full time to get a job
That just seems odd. How were they checking that you were the one who completed them?

All of the interview processes I've had recently have checked I did the exercise by either asking me to describe what I built with no aid, asking me to walk through the code with it in front of me, or asking me to conceptually expand on what I built on a whiteboard.

robinson-wall··on Growing a cron job monitoring side project into a real business
As a customer I can highly, highly recommend Cronitor.

The service is continually improving and the customer support has been second-to-none, they have gone above and beyond to meet my needs.

This is nice work, but anyone wanting to try it for themselves should be warned that you shouldn't unpickle data received from an untrusted source.

robinson-wall··on The Mind of an Octopus
I expect we'd be perfectly happy, not realising that we are the pet. Cats and dogs seem to be.

Of course that's my human arrogance, assuming the cats and dogs don't know.

I don't think iOS is to blame for the binary choice that you get with Uber / Waze. I have some apps which have three choices in the location services settings (Always, While using the app, Never) so it seems like a choice by the developer.
robinson-wall··on AirPods are now available
Fun fact, siri happily does this when the phone is unlocked so you can happily screw with someone who has M-F alarms set up and doesn't usually turn them off.

"Hey siri, delete all my alarms"
