robinj6··on Hello Yarn 2, Goodbye node_modules
Kind of frustrating that this article doesn’t really describe in a nutshell how they do it, despite it being the title. It kind of assumes you already read about dropping node_modules.
robinj6··on You need Software Developers to believe in your project (2020)
This was really capturing my interest until I saw their title-cased Invented Solution that they were promoting to fix this.
robinj6··on US Navy set off a 40k-pound explosive to test its new supercarrier
Any idea of the budget for a test like this?
robinj6··on Google executives see cracks in their company’s success
I have little sentiment for Google, but this article seems to be arranged as part of a campaign. The statements of a small number of x-Googlers is taken as a generalization of the company’s sentiment as a whole and is used to seed doubt, while acknowledging very little specific mistakes.
robinj6··on How Intuitive Are Macs Really?
I’ve used a PC heavily for 15 years and 6 months ago switched cold turkey to a Mac. There is only one thing I found Windows to handle better and that is file system navigation (via UI). I just cannot get used to finder, from the default lack of an address bar, to individual windows not showing up on your tab switcher, to the lack of an equivalent run dialogue, etc. It just isn’t as intuitive to me and dealing with the file system is unpleasant.
robinj6··on Company Lets Celebrities Digitally Clone Their Voice So They Can Loan It Out
I can’t see the benefit of this outweighing the potential future catastrophes it will create, not to mention the future inherent distrust of audio we will develop.

We’re going to start missing real things.

robinj6··on What I learnt roasting 200 landing pages
SEO has made the Internet so toxic. I can’t stand wading through data these days, it’s written for bots.
robinj6··on HN: The Good Parts (2016)
I expect this post will get few comments out of self-consciousness.
robinj6··on Instagram ads Facebook won't show you
Moxie wrote the Cellebrite article.
robinj6··on Google penalizes you for using Google Analytics
This has frustrated me so much, as I spend a lot of time optimizing web performance. Gtag.js is pushed by analytics, however after loading it then async loads analytics.js. It is very inefficient, especially for sites that do not much more than track page views. It is the worst scoring factor on sites I optimize because there’s very little you can do about it without hacks.
robinj6··on Request for comments regarding topics to be discussed at Dark Patterns workshop
Worst dark pattern IMHO these days is the free trial that requires a credit card and rolls right into subscription, especially when it defaults to annual and there’s an early cancellation fee. Canceling subscriptions is also a labyrinth that differs by site.
robinj6··on Request for comments regarding topics to be discussed at Dark Patterns workshop
Love that this website requires following a link for every comment.
robinj6··on Beginner’s guide to mechanical keyboards
“Beginners Guide” para 2: 2KRO, 3KRO...

Lemme go Google these terms so I can make it through my beginners guide.

robinj6··on Show your costs to boost sales
I’ll bet the Harvard students saw a new fancy chicken bowl and bought it out of novelty.
robinj6··on Show HN: Science and math-flavored programming problems for beginners
What do you use for the interpretation of so many languages? Did you just build a bunch of sandboxed vms?
robinj6··on 7% of Americans don’t use the internet. Who are they?
Now that it has become such a media item, how many shooters in the past few years do you believe had a partial motive in a near certainty they would achieve broad recognition in their otherwise meaningless and miserable lives? When you read the news and Wikipedia on the latest shooter, you’re contributing to future shooters in about the same magnitude as being a single voter.
robinj6··on 7% of Americans don’t use the internet. Who are they?
Johannesburg, relatively speaking, is similar to this. People will use the Internet in business parks to do their jobs, but you don’t see people walking around staring at their phones. People use WhatsApp to curb high talk and text rates, but that is a lions share of what phones are used for. It feels very similar to 90s America technologically and it’s strangely relieving.
robinj6··on FileZilla now contains adware if you download from the official homepage
SourceForge is to software as maggots are to meat. Don’t know how the people behind it have an ounce of self respect.
robinj6··on Show HN: Ape Playground
Reads very similar to JavaScript.
robinj6··on Today’s biggest threat to democracy isn’t fake news–it’s selective facts
This is exactly why I brush off all comments of fake news -- isn't it funny that 95% of all "valid news sites" are left-wing? So by removing all fake news sites, we have completely factual (biased, selective) news leaning heavily in one direction.
robinj6··on Ask HN: Do you develop with the lights off?
Interesting, I never thought about that. For some reason, I don't mind the contrast.
robinj6··on Update on Bitcoin Cash
So people who had 10 million in BTC just made about 2.5 million dollars?
robinj6··on Update on Bitcoin Cash
Dumb question:

Supposing BCC eventually becomes of comparable value to BTC, does this mean everyone's fortune was just doubled?

robinj6··on AD – A Javascript implementation of common Active Directory tasks
You would download and run this on a Node server. It then uses LDAP to talk to Active Directory, and exposes a Javascript library to make that talk simple.
robinj6··on AD – A Javascript implementation of common Active Directory tasks
Reading it wrong. Any application needs to use secrets, it's up to the developer to pass them in properly. For example, you can use environmental variables, command line args when running the process, or a config file. This isn't a client-side library.
robinj6··on Mailit: A Tiny Drop-In REST API to Send Emails
No, it's not. It's its own thing.
robinj6··on Plastic Micro-Particle Patch Bigger Than Mexico Found in Pacific
This is a misleading title regularly used by the media. TLDR: This area has a higher concentration of micro-particles. It is not visible to the naked eye.
robinj6··on Postage – A fast replacement for pgAdmin
Your comment made me so happy. I was asking myself if I was crazy, surely I was missing something for it to be this bad.

I really wish they would get it right, Postgres is such a powerful tool, it doesn't do it any justice.

robinj6··on Happy Sysadmin Day
:tada:
