robflynn··on Facebook is pushing back on Apple’s new iPhone privacy rules
Okay, but so could anyone. I'm not sure your point here?

They're clearly at least trying to move in the opposite direction and have been making those moves for some time now.

Maybe they won't always go that way. Maybe they will.

No one is saying they're our savior, though. No one is begging Apple to please save us.

robflynn··on Ask HN: Why YouTube suggestions are better when I am logged off?
They really should stop showing videos from your subscribed channels in the 'Home' view. They take ay too much priority there.

If you're finding that YT, when logged in, is becoming obsessed with any one topic, you can go into your YT history and remove some of the entries related to that topic.

That'll remove those from consideration and your home screen recommendations will change.

It has gotten to the point that I have trouble discovering new interesting things -- unless I already know what I'm looking for I probably won't find anything to watch that I haven't already seen.

robflynn··on TeXmacs 1.99.14 released. Take a look at this research paper exported to HTML
Yup, this was my first thought. I think the generated page looks great but it definitely has a11y problems.
robflynn··on Grubhub sued for listing restaurants without permission
Same here, my area's energy company increased their rate sto build a new nuclear plant, spent some of the money, and then never finished it... Years later I think I got a check for $2.67 for that.
robflynn··on Google Shuts Down the Google Feed API
Pipes was shut down in fall of 2015.

robflynn··on Apple Introduces the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus
You can take the "estimated monthly cost" that they showed and multiply by 24. i.e. $36/mo = $864. $32/mo = $768. It may not be exact but it should be close.
robflynn··on Grooveshark co-founder, 28, found dead in home
Yup. I know this all too well. When I was younger, my best friend was a soccer player and in great shape. He woke up one morning, went to take a shower before school, and just dropped dead in the shower. There was nothing anyone could do.

Undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

robflynn··on Mongo BSON Injection: Ruby Regexps Strike Again
I think you mis-parsed the response. You said "hats off" and elcct was making a joke based on that re: white hats. I don't think there was any accusation intended.
robflynn··on Jump – Experiences like you're actually there
How does something like this compare? I would like to try it:

(The bit with the spider webs especially registered with me as something that might be a trigger for making your brain go wonky.)

robflynn··on Ceres RC3 Animation: Bright spots revealed to be composed of many smaller spots
I believe so. They have (if I recall) viewed them with both visible and infrared spectrums.

robflynn··on So Your Company Has Been Found Using Alex’s Photographs Without Permission
You would be surprised. I was yelled at on the regular by folks using gaim because I didn't want to add whatever random feature they were asking for.

I also had some dude, some how, figure out my cell phone number. He started calling me at 3am. He would always say that he "wanted to talk to me about his ideas."

I had to change my number to get away from that one.

robflynn··on Paul Kalanithi, writer and neurosurgeon, dies at 37
You do not know this, but you have made me introspective. There are some things I will be and am improving upon because of you.

Rest well, Paul.

robflynn··on A website that deletes itself once indexed by Google
Probably not. This happens more than you might think. I got called in to consult on a project where something similar was happening. Client would add products to their web store and the next day the products were missing.

Unsecured access and 'GET' based deletes were everywhere.

robflynn··on Are humans getting cleverer?
Are you talking their averages then scaled with current averages? I thought IQ was averaged around 100. I'm on mobile with a spotty connection right now, so I can't look much up at the moment. I am doing well to reply on my fourth attempt.
robflynn··on Signal 2.0 released with private messaging support
At some point, you have to decide if the $8.25/mo is worth the added security, I suppose.
robflynn··on Ask HN: MBP or Thinkpad
I am happy with my MBP. I used other laptops previously and they seemed to crap out on me more often than I thought they should. The MBP has been reliable for a few years now. Like others below said, YMMV.
robflynn··on Netflix Comes to Cuba
You would be surprised (maybe?) at the number of rural areas in the U.S. that do not have any real type of access. My parents, for example, are limited to ~1mbit downloads on good days. They cannot stream Netflix and really can't stream Youtube videos either. That 1mbit is with random bursts of noise/packet loss as well. It's pretty crappy. I tried to game there once and saw my latency fluctuate between 200ms and 10,000ms.
robflynn··on YouTube now defaults to HTML5 video

robflynn··on Ask HN: Remote ROR developers, how much per hour you make?
$50 - $100/hr depending on the project. Planning to increase the rate soon. 1099. My non-remote W2 salary is less than that.
robflynn··on Verizon Wireless injecting tracking UIDs into HTTP requests
I can confirm that disabling adblock allows these settings to show up.
robflynn··on Study finds reduced brain volume in expert chess players
Compared to other insects, I assume, but I found that statement ambiguous as well. I mean, compared to other creatures with similar brain sizes.
robflynn··on CDC confirms first Ebola case diagnosed in US
I found that interesting as well. If I had just returned from an area where Ebola is currently spreading and started to feel ill, my first thought would be to head immediately to the hospital as a precaution.
robflynn··on iPhone 6 Plus bending in pockets
I have a bent iphone 5. I bent it by accidentally dropping it, having the back of the phone land perfectly on the small ledge leading into the doorway of my home, and then stepping on the phone (I weigh about 200lbs.)

The phone bent, but the glass did not break and the phone is still functional. That surprised me. It's actually quite curved. I'll try to get a photo of it later, not near my computer with a webcam at the moment.

I kind of lost the point I was trying to make. Mostly just posting to say, I bent my phone but it took a lot of force.

robflynn··on US cable giants calls on FCC to block cities' expansion of high-speed internet
That happened in the town where I grew up. My parents still cannot get proper broadband. There is a cable company in the town and they have one of these exclusivity agreements with the county.

However, they refuse to provide broadband access to the entire county. It is quite frustrating.

robflynn··on Robin Williams, Oscar-Winning Comedian, Dies at 63
Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel.

Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain.

Doctor says "Treatment is simple. A great clown, Pagliacci, is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up."

Man bursts into tears.

Says "But, doctor..."

"...I am Pagliacci."

This is sadly true all too often.

robflynn··on Ask HN: What horrifying and/or terrible things have you seen in production code?
I have seen some similar code. After authentication, a parameter was passed into the URL. Basically, if you had that token, you were logged in. Some user posted a link to their page on some site and included that token.

Later, the user complained about all of their photos constantly being deleted.

Photo deletes were GET-based and did not have no-follow. Google eventually indexed their logged-in link and was happily deleting all of their photos daily.

Fun times tracking that one down. (It was a code base that I inherited.)

robflynn··on Rum Deal: America’s booze laws are terrible
That was partially it. The other part was the stores that were open during the prohibited times usually sold allowed items also (medicine, food, diapers, etc.)

As far as I know, the law has been repealed. Before I moved away I saw them implement Sunday beer and wine sales (still no sunday liquor sales) and do not remember having difficulty buying the previously restricted items on Sunday.

It was weird entering a Wal-Mart (or other large store) and seeing a large section of items roped off.

robflynn··on Rum Deal: America’s booze laws are terrible
When I lived in Columbia, SC, we couldn't buy anything on Sunday mornings before noon. There were a few exceptions, mostly stuff like food and medicine. I tried to buy a broom and some cleaning supplies at 11am and every store that I went to told me to come back in an hour.

I felt like I was being punished for not being a church goer. It was an odd experience.
