robertfall··on Solid Queue 1.6.0 now supports fiber workers
I’m really curious about this as someone that has never tried Elixir/BEAM.

What could I stop caring about?

robertfall··on Claude Opus 4.7
As far as I understand Opus 4.7 disregards the disable adaptive thinking flag. So if you're seeing it perform well, perhaps their evals are inline?
robertfall··on Show HN: Gaming Couch – a local multiplayer party game platform for 8 players
It is Afrikaans.

It’s not so much the language as the content. Songs and pop culture that 30-60 year old South Africans would be familiar with.

I love this initiative!

I’ve spent several hours over the holidays searching for something my family can play and coming up empty.

The game that most often works is Song Pop Party on Apple TV, but non-apple phones have a second rate experience and keep disconnecting.

Ideally we’d have a trivia game as I also want to engage some older folks, but the leasing trivia game on Apple TV is way too US specific and hard for our family to enjoy.

There used to be a game show on local TV in the late nineties called “Noot vir Noot” (note by note) that had a whole bunch of games based on music that was familiar to the local market. I’ve been chasing something like that for years and not come close.

I guess the point of my rambling is that I LOVE the phones-as-controllers approach to party games, but many seem to focus on Nintendo-esque experiences, rather than quiz game like experiences.

I am aware of the Jackbox games but haven’t looked at the recent releases. They were hit and miss with the family in the past, with many of the non-english first language folks often not getting it.

robertfall··on Fiber Concurrency
It's quite exciting to see how much movement there has been in Async ruby. It's not a silver bullet for traditional Rails-like apps, but it's a whole new frontier for Ruby, and is particularly timely and helpful for LLM integrations.

It's also been done in a way that is transparent and practically colorless (in contrast to async/await), AND is competitive performance wise with the big dogs.

I expect it to gain in popularity over the coming years.

robertfall··on Nvidia announces next-gen RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs
This.

You can't get high frame rates with path tracing and 4K. It just doesn't happen. You need to enable DLSS and frame gen to get 100fps with more complete ray and path tracing implementations.

People might be getting upset because the 4090 is WAY more power than games need, but there are games that try and make use of that power and are actually limited by the 4090.

Case in point Cyberpunk and Indiana Jones with path tracing don't get anywhere near 100FPS with native resolution.

Now many might say that's just a ridiculous ask, but that's what GP was talking about here. There's no way you'd get more than 10-15fps (if that) with path tracing at 8K.

robertfall··on Show HN: Faktor – The missing 2FA code autocomplete for Chrome
1Password already has support for this. Some would argue that you're defeating the purpose of 2FA if it's stored in the same way as your password, but it is pleasant.
robertfall··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
In the EU Safari is no longer used by default. You're forced to choose a browser when setting up the phone.
robertfall··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
I hope that Apple pulls out of the EU. They're less than 10% of their global revenue. If the fines are higher than their profits why on earth would they stay?
robertfall··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
Yea, but that's not so true for the DMA. They're only targeting foreign companies using it.
robertfall··on Commission opens additional DMA investigation against Apple
To non-EU big tech that is. They are very happy to protect Spotify.
robertfall··on A first look at Europe's alternative iPhone app stores
What I don't understand is why people keep using Apple? There are already platforms that allow this. Use them!
robertfall··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2024)
You've mentioned remote... is that Global Remote or US Remote?

Sanctuary Computer looks like an awesome place to work.

robertfall··on Ask HN: To what extent have digital payments replaced cash in your country?
In South Africa, middle-income and above can be almost all digital if they choose. Some folks prefer cash and it's still accepted most places, though I'm seeing some places go cashless more recently.

This is the case even at small markets etc. Over the last two years mobile NFC machines have become widespread.

The only area where I personally feel like I need cash is with car guards (literally people who stand and look after cars in parking areas). I'm not a fan of the profession, but it's culturally common place and many folks tip in small denominations of notes or coins.

robertfall··on ChatGPT for Hardware Design
neodypsis reached out and we got to the bottom of this.

When a user visits a Flux project without being signed in we create a temporary anonymous user record for them so that they can interact with the document. These user records are populated with human-like names (which is partially to blame for the confusion here. We'll fix that.)

When a user signs up their anonymous record is updated with the details they provide but the record id remains the same so we can keep the user's interaction history.

In this case when the Github sign up failed the process stopped half way. The anonymous account was never updated with the username neodypsis provided but appeared to be someone else's account (a human name followed by several numbers).

We've verified that the account was indeed linked to neodypsis' Github profile and no-one else had ever had access to it.

We've started some work to improve the OAuth sign up process.

robertfall··on ChatGPT for Hardware Design
Hi,

I'm on call for the team this week.

We'd love to get more information here as we take anything around privacy and authentication very seriously. I'd like to get usernames of profiles involved and rule out being redirected back to a page you were visiting before signing in.

Would you be open to discussing further? You can reach me at robert.herbst@flux.ai. Being able to discuss with you directly would be really helpful.

Alternatively we actively monitor and respond to bug reports filed here: https://feedback.flux.ai/bugreports

robertfall··on ChatGPT for Hardware Design
GPT 4 is a massive improvement in this regard.

Copilot specifically asked me to provide the capacitance value for the capacitor closest to the comment pin in response to my question about optimal resistance for a resistor. Once I provided the value (by setting it in the tool, not by typing it in the chat) and asked it to try again it thanked me for the new info and gave back a good resistance value and how it arrived at it.

robertfall··on Ask HN: Do you hate iTunes?
No. I don't hate iTunes.

It could certainly be better but I wouldn't say I hate it. If they improved the loading speed of iTunes and the App Store it would be fine. It's very similar to the Steam Apps in some regards (store and library in one).

I do hate the fact that ONLY iTunes can be used to move stuff onto an iPhone though. That's the part I hate.

If they broke it up into small parts I'd be so happy though...

tl;dr iTunes is a little worse than meh. I hate the fact that it's the only think we can use.

robertfall··on Ask HN: Your best passive income sources?
This is still my go to tool for GUI request crafting. Thanks!
