robertclaus··on Show HN: Stop paying for Dropbox/Google Drive, use your own S3 bucket instead
Feels like this is missing some of the key points of using generic bucket storage for me: 1. Archive pricing for really large old documents. 2. Cross-provider backups; especially for critical documents.
robertclaus··on Show HN: I made open source, zero power PCB hackathon badges
How much did they end up costing? We do a similar PCB medallion every year for another event and haven't been able to get quite that fancy due to cost. We usually only manage to get some LEDs and a processor in our lower budget range.
robertclaus··on Lat.md: Agent Lattice: a knowledge graph for your codebase, written in Markdown
We've been doing this with simple mkdocs for ages. My experience is that rendering the markdown to feel like public docs is important for getting humans to review and take it seriously. Otherwise it goes stale as soon as one dev on the project doesn't care.
robertclaus··on Niche Museums
If you're ever in Wisconsin - House on the Rock and the Mustard Museum.
robertclaus··on I quit editing photos
I went through a similar transition. Used to spend hours in dark table each shoot, but for a hobby it got tedious. Eventually I got my in-camera configuration right enough and haven't touched a raw in months. I'll still sort and crop; but no need to fiddle with things the camera is good enough at already.
robertclaus··on Half million 'Words with Spaces' missing from dictionaries
Isn't this the difference between a dictionary and an encyclopedia?
robertclaus··on “Nothing” is the secret to structuring your work
I think that's sort of what I got from the article - open the right tools for what you're actually working on, not everything you might need for all the tasks in your backlog.
robertclaus··on Code has _always_ been the easy part
I actually agree that the code is one of the most important things to get right at a software company. Still. I would argue very few companies win on code merit alone either though. Strategy, customer communication, market timing, etc on the business side; design, system architecture, dev velocity on the technical side. So many factors are important beyond the quality of the code.
robertclaus··on Claude Opus 4.6
Hi Ted! Small world to see you here!
robertclaus··on The coming war on car ownership?
The automotive industry is huge. It seems unlikely that they would lose lobbying efforts to startup tech companies - so it seems far more likely that cars get more expensive due to government mandated self-diving "safety" features, but just enough that Americans still buy them.
robertclaus··on It looks like the status/need-triage label was removed
Classic CI bug with a flair of LLM fun! We had something similar creep into our custom merge queue a few weeks back.
robertclaus··on Let's be honest, Generative AI isn't going all that well
Odds this was AI generated?
robertclaus··on Why users cannot create Issues directly
Shouldn't this be a discussion?
robertclaus··on Python numbers every programmer should know
I liked reading through it from a "is modern Python doing anything obviously wrong?" perspective, but strongly disagree anyone should "know" these numbers. There's like 5-10 primitives in there that everyone should know rough timings for; the rest should be derived with big-O algorithm and data structure knowledge.
robertclaus··on How uv got so fast
At Plotly we did a decent amount of benchmarking to see how much the different defaults `uv` uses lead to its performance. This was necessary so we could advise our enterprise customers on the transition. We found you lost almost all of the speed gains if you configured uv behave as much like pip as you could. A trivial example is the precompile flag, which can easily be 50% of pips install time for a typical data science venv.

robertclaus··on Apple's "notarisation" – blocking software freedom of developers and users
Apple absolutely does not manually read all the source code they notarized.
robertclaus··on Starcloud
If this math added up, wouldn't solar panels and radiators on earth solve the same problem?
robertclaus··on Starcloud
You'll never be able to do maintenance or upgrade these things. The up front cost seems extremely high given the risk of hardware failure or obselecence at data center scales.
robertclaus··on Understanding Spec-Driven-Development: Kiro, Spec-Kit, and Tessl
Plotly's new Plotly Studio product is a spec-anchored approach to building data applications. Each chart or dataset gets its own prompt/spec.

The question of how much detail to include in a spec is really hard. We actually split it into two levels - an input prompt describing details the user cares about in that component and an output spec describing what was built to allow verification.

robertclaus··on Pre-record your demos
A company I worked for switched over to pre-recorded demos and everyone talked about how clever it was for the first few larger audiences. Then they made a mistake and replayed a clip during the same session and the audience chat blew up. You could see a dip in new users for days after the demo.
robertclaus··on Why language models hallucinate
While I get the academic perspective of sharing these insights, this article comes across as corporate justifying/complaining that their model's score is lower than it should be on the leaderboards... by saying the leaderboards are wrong.

Or an even darker take is that its coorporate saying they won't prioritize eliminating hallucinations until the leaderboards reward it.

robertclaus··on Dynamically patch a Python function's source code at runtime
Concurrency?
robertclaus··on AWS European Sovereign Cloud to be operated by EU citizens
This very much confused me. Isn't the idea behind this movement that Europe doesn't want to be dependent on external companies for critical infrastructure? Won't this just be the equivalent of a shell company completely dependant on Amazon in the US for any future fixes or R&D?
robertclaus··on Shrinking freshwater availability increasing land contribution to sea level rise
Interesting second order effect of global warming.
robertclaus··on Tokens are getting more expensive
My team is debating this exact question for a new product we have in early access. Ultimately we realized the issue early on, so even our plans option would include at-cost usage limits.
robertclaus··on If you're remote, ramble
Why not a shared "Ramblings" channel? And at that point, why not re-use something like "Random" that many companies already have?
robertclaus··on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong
Quote: "I don’t see the value in discussing a “national” crisis in homebuilding oligopoly from which the 49 biggest metros are exempt."

I enjoyed most of this article, but it did slide into opinions periodically. This quote in particular stood out given the issues rural communities face regarding availability of competition in a lot of other services.

robertclaus··on Do variable names matter for AI code completion? (2025)
Nice to see actual data!
robertclaus··on Simplify, then add delightness: On designing for children
Good lessons for those of us working on adult tools as well!
robertclaus··on Show HN: Windows 7 GUI for the web
I wonder if the Microsoft "glass" look influenced the recent Apple work.
