robert_foss··on Replacing the old battery on rechargeable bike lights
The Ravemen CL200 does. And it's cheap. Doing a 2000km ride with it currently.
robert_foss··on Interrail: 6,379Km and 13 Countries over 7 weeks
It is predictably bad. I think I'm 5/5 for my last few trips with big delays or even cancellations of legs.
robert_foss··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
Can confirm, starting and running a business in Germany is miserable.

The processes are all non-digital, and have many steps like Notaries for example.

robert_foss··on The Future for Tyr, a Rust GPU Driver for Arm Mali Hardware
I thought Tyr was the Norse god of War & Justice.

Considering that the Mali GPUs were developed by ARM Norway, and this driver is Just, I would say this is one aptly named driver.

robert_foss··on The Sovereign Tech Fund invests in Scala
Very on brand for Germany to invest tech 15 years past its prime.
robert_foss··on Scott Adams has died
He treated his cancer with the anti-threadworm medication Ivermectin.
robert_foss··on Making Magic Leap past Nvidia's secure bootchain and breaking Tesla Autopilots
Sounds really interesting. CCC is an amazing event.
robert_foss··on OBS Studio Gets a New Renderer
Sure, it's happened before but it is not in Apples customers interests, just Apples corporate moat building interests.
robert_foss··on OBS Studio Gets a New Renderer
This quite clearly shows the cost of Apple preferring to build a software ecosystem moat, than using the Vulkan API which every other OS supports.

Vulkan support was introduced in OBS Studio 25.0 in March 2020, 5.5 years ago.

robert_foss··on Adafruit: Arduino’s Rules Are ‘Incompatible With Open Source’
Arduino is a tiny market, and Qcom has left bigger things to die on the vine previously. They dont need Arduino to succeed in any way.
robert_foss··on Germany's train service is one of Europe's worst. How did it get so bad?
I can confirm. While there is a fair amount of train infrastructure, it is horribly unreliable. Plan for being delayed for 30-50% of the scheduled travel time.
robert_foss··on The Death of Arduino?
Qcom is a lawnmower, if you stick your hand in, it'll chop it off.
robert_foss··on Qualcomm to acquire Arduino
Qcom is a corporate behemoth, much like Oracle. In the immortal words of Bryan Cantrill, it is a lawnmower and if you stick your hand in it you'll get it chopped off.
robert_foss··on Calling Their Bluff
Very true, if only more sanity was brought.
robert_foss··on FCC Chair Brendan Carr is letting ISPs merge–as long as they end DEI programs
American institutions are truly being gutted and weaponized.
robert_foss··on France Endorses UN Open Source Principles
I don't think I agree with any part of this take, other than postmarketOS having a bit more money would be nice.
robert_foss··on VMware perpetual license holders receive cease-and-desist letters from Broadcom
I just set up my first Incus machine, and it was a joy.
robert_foss··on Closing the Chapter on OpenH264
It really is too bad AV1 hasn't had a successor yet. x264 and x265 are patent ridden scourges and should be avoided wherever possible.
robert_foss··on America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
Reagan taking away collective bargaining rights for ATCs seems to be what have led to the shortage and the helicopter accident last week.
robert_foss··on "A computer can never be held accountable"
Based on exactly what should the computers make management decisions?

Reports filed by humans? Or meaningless automated metrics?

robert_foss··on Show HN: Rust Web Framework
@levkk How do you thing it compares to loco.rs, I'd like to understand the differences.
robert_foss··on The state of GNU/Linux and a case against shared object libraries
Security + build time isn't the issue, but security + dev/testing time is.

Maintaining a secure package of zlib takes linearly more time with more versions of it used.

All distros are manpower limited.

robert_foss··on Reverse engineering ESP32 Wi-Fi driver: the road ahead
The ESP32 is 802.11n over 2.4ghz with no MIMO, so the bandwidth will always be bad.
robert_foss··on Israel shuts down local Al Jazeera offices
Isreal has funded Hamas directly too.

robert_foss··on RedHat employee bans Hyprland creator from FDO
Almost every FDO member is an employee of a corporation. Some are required to use their corporate email for upstream contributions. This is all very normal.
robert_foss··on RedHat employee bans Hyprland creator from FDO
Yes, I read it.

No one is owed FDO membership.

FDO is a community, and having people be treated with respect is crucial for maintaining this community. Letting people with a history of not respecting others be a part of that community is a problem, even if that behavior was displayed elsewhere.

robert_foss··on RedHat employee bans Hyprland creator from FDO
FDO has a code of conduct and this person wasn't behaving in a manner permissible by the CoC.

Not agreeing with the CoC is one thing, but FDO is a community and it needs to be able to create a safe and inclusive space for its members.

I'm a FDO member and I see no problem here, the CoC existing and being upheld is a good thing.

robert_foss··on How much faster are the Gnome 46 terminals?
guake
robert_foss··on ActivityPub/Nostr/At-Bluesky Compared
What about Matrix? I think the protocol would compete well against the others in this list.
robert_foss··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
From what I heard the cut the public funding for Digitalization by 90% last year. It truly is like going into a a -20yr time machine living here.

Soon you'll be able to use a credit card in most shops even!
