robertAngst··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
The rest is just marketing.

Apple is very good at Marketing.

EDIT: Will someone explain what this theoretical 'non spec' thing that matters is? The Apple logo?

robertAngst··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
>buy Apple device and be sure that everything there is pretty good.

The alternative is that you spend 30 minutes of research and get a superior product cheaper.

This isnt an opinion, this is reality.

You can find a computer with better specs than Apple, cheaper. I'm not sympathetic to the 'mom' who doesn't know what RAM is, they get penalized by Apple for being an uninformed consumer.

Is there any reason for a 'Nerd' to pick Apple?

robertAngst··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
I'll list my problems, I don't expect this to go over well, but since you asked-

>Apple's podcast app was glitchy/laggy.

>Apple maps took me a 'long' way, but it didn't know traffic was bad. I give them a 50% pass.

>Apple maps telling you to turn at the last second...

>The home screen is not on the same level as Android, no widgets in 2019.

>Controls, I felt like things werent intuitive, but thats an opinion thing.

>Updates, oh my god, it seemed like every day I needed to update, and every time I needed to sign in, and enter password

>I didn't like the animations, they took too long. Maybe I could have turned them off.

I can't think of anything else about the iphone product, so I'll let everyone tell me these are 'features' that are great.

Then there is an entirely different list about Apple being 'evil', being anti-competitive, closed, hackable, anti-consumer, poor treatment of workers, etc.. I consider working and buying products from 'evil' companies bad capitalism. I don't see them doing anything to remedy these.

>Reliability issues are a problem, but that's all within reason I think.

No, when your product doesnt work, that is unacceptable.

robertAngst··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
Apple users say they like that Apple is closed, so I wouldn't put it past them.

My last company gave us iPhones, and I was excited to try an Apple product without giving Apple money.

Wow, I felt like I was using a phone that was 5 years old.

I only imagine Apple users have Allegory of the Cave effect, they don't know whats out there. Leaving the cave is lots of work, so they enjoy whats available for them.

robertAngst··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
>Even with the issues above it still has an excellent display, I like the keyboard (waiting to start having issues), and the battery life is the best I’ve ever had.

I don't understand this.

I understand not liking Linux Desktop(I hate it, but LOVE LOVE LOVE Ubuntu Server, fav OS of all time)

And... the screen is what has you sold on Apple OS?

I'm flustered at this logic. Pretty screen-> Good operating system

I only imagine you use your laptop as a facebook machine. Would a cellphone do?

robertAngst··on US halts recent practice of disclosing nuclear weapon total
To be fair, individuals are part of groups.

If a group gets a benefit(survival), people will support the best thing for that group.

Because 99% of math is basic calculations.

0.9% are 100-200 level math problems.

0.1% are beyond that, but at that point, hopefully your 200 level skills have taught you enough to learn about solving that.

In my lifetime, I only had 1, beyond 200 level problem that required research on math to understand. And technically, it was optional, but I volunteered.

Everything else was algebra.

robertAngst··on How the Boeing 737 Max disaster looks to a software Developer
>I absolutely hate sloppy engineering.

>Of course this is pure speculation

Cool ideas, people have already figured out this was designed into the system. Sure more testing can catch things, but how much money are you allowed to spend on every single feature?

There isn't a 'right' answer to these questions, engineers are literally doing cutting edge, never before jobs.

Everyone wants more time, more money, and better suppliers.

You need a call to action, not just a youtube video talking about groups not being responsible.

robertAngst··on How the Boeing 737 Max disaster looks to a software Developer
You watched the VOX video and are reposting the summery here?

They are going to fix the software with no changes to the design.

They don't need to change the design, that would be expensive overkill. Software updates are as close as we can get to Free. There is not a single company or human with infinite money to spend on anything, we can't always have the fantasy.

robertAngst··on US halts recent practice of disclosing nuclear weapon total
I wasnt even alive then, and I think this is insanely too simple.

>If America was able to keep that secret

There is no America, there is the United States government. Americans did not want to join in World War 2, the president did.

When the time came to drop the nuclear bomb, these decisions were made by few people, and the popular theory is that the Democrats(incumbent) would have lost elections if the war went on, Americans died, and people found out about the Nuclear Bomb later.

The best decisions for the world are not made, the best decision for individuals are made.

I wonder what will happen when Putins or Xis back are against the wall politically. What horrors will they do for self preservation?

EDIT: Don't downvote because the Democrats were in power at the time. The Republicans would have done this too.

robertAngst··on A physics master’s degree opens doors to myriad careers
I am very happy I choose to work on my own projects than peruse a PhD.

Anecdotes like yours from my peers were very helpful in making this decision.

Not to mention, both teachers seemed like they wanted me to pay to do their work.

robertAngst··on A physics master’s degree opens doors to myriad careers
Do physics students have to learn about electrical components?

In Chemical Engineering, I had to take 2 electrical classes and I learned what math I needed and what components exist.

robertAngst··on A physics master’s degree opens doors to myriad careers
But then you are an Engineer.

I love engineering, but physics is often theoretical to the point that its useless for macro application.

I imagine an Engineering Physics is an Engineer.

robertAngst··on A physics master’s degree opens doors to myriad careers
I feel like any bachelors degree in the sciences should have you capable of doing any math needed.

I am quite concerned that Doctors in the medical field have limited to no understanding of statistics. IMO, stats should be second nature to anyone with 200 level math courses.

Any pages in particular? I tried to either have the excel file on page, or leave it in an HTML table.

Btw, thats my next big overhaul. How would you want the data? Javascript HTML table?

robertAngst··on I found two identical packs of Skittles among 468 packs
Yes.

And for 'discovered' things, there is no reason to make a mistake.

However, most of the time you are working on something that is New.

>Actually seeing that effort through to the finish line can be a vivid demonstration for students of this predictive power of what might otherwise be viewed as “merely abstract” and not concretely useful mathematics.

This is how I feel about engineering.

If you design something, prove it out with logic and math. It will work.

Or you will learn where you were wrong.

robertAngst··on Fact Checking Tesla's “Impact Report”
> You've got a good product

They have a product their buyers like, but the car doesnt have buttons or a center console. "Good" is in the eye of the beholder.

Tesla has a weird situation that despite a product that breaks often and doesn't have niceties, their customers have a high satisfaction.

robertAngst··on Fact Checking Tesla's “Impact Report”
Marketing.

But its 2019, if you still believe Tesla doesn't have ethics problems, you haven't paid attention or don't care.

robertAngst··on Emissions fall in Madrid city center thanks to new traffic restrictions
Isn't it interesting how we opinions on the lives and decisions halfway across the world- Despite not living there and understanding the complexity of life.

I'm an Environmentalist, but whenever I hear about government imposed solutions, I imagine someone's life is terrible.

-Elderly folks have a significantly harder time getting necessities

-Emergency vehicles take longer due to traffic

I won't go on, because I won't pretend I understand life and culture in another country.

This reminds me of the question a Lawyer said they debated- Does the world need a Tyrant to stop Capitalism from destroying the earth, or is Freedom the way?

robertAngst··on Hollywood Upended as Unions Tell Writers to Fire Agents
At any scale bigger than 1 person, we see specialization of labor.

It only makes sense a ~0.5M dollar brand/person has a 'marketing/legal' department.

The weird part is that Hollywood has this ingrained in their culture. Could someone participate without spending the cost of an agent?

robertAngst··on Report deems Russia a pioneer in GPS spoofing attacks
I work in automotive telematics-

You can always store 'last known location', the rest is math. The military has/will have this.

However this is a non-issue at the moment for auto, and with 5G/autonomous coming out, GPS might be seeing its last useful days in my part.
