roberson87··on Chinese Scientist Accused of Smuggling Samples, Amid Crackdown on Research Theft
I can surmise your post in 2 points:

1. The stolen material by these Chinese scientists were worthless and akin to a student taking home a notebook after a lecture. 2. The real issue is here is not of the rampant theft of intellectual property by rogue Chinese scientists, but that Westerners are disgusted by the mere thought of Chinese people learning science.

I didn't need to learn your name ('Zhou') to see that you are another CCP loyalist. And honestly I am quite concerned that a visiting Chinese scientist like yourself holds sympathetic views of these intellectual theft crimes by your countrymen.....

Mind sharing the name of the app?
roberson87··on Why are my Go executable files so large?
Thanks for the reply. Would appreciate if you could expand on this a little, since when? FWITW Google Stackdriver documentation [1] still states that you have to build source with those flags for version 1.1>.

roberson87··on Why are my Go executable files so large?
Are you sure this is true? Doesn't delve for example build Go source with special flags (gcflags=all='-N -l')to generate debugging symbols. I also remember having to build Go code with those flags for Stackdriver to get the correct debugging information without any optimisations.
roberson87··on Turkey unveils first fully domestically-produced car in $3.7B bet on electric
Just came back from Turkey and have to agree. The new airport is excellent and they are currently building a new metro to/from airport. I was surprised at how well run some of the government services are. Just wish more people spoke English.
roberson87··on Two Las Vegas Men Plead Guilty in U.S. Criminal Streaming Piracy Case
I think it was a typo, later in the article they mention this service had more content than Netflix, Hulu etc. I share your scepticism that two individuals could build a streaming service catering to >160m customers.
roberson87··on AMD’s Entire Ryzen 9 3950X 16 Core CPU Inventory Sold Out in Japan
I'm curious as to why these processors make it easy to debug threading issues? Is it just due to the sheer number of cores or something? not sure why that would help either.
roberson87··on India Acknowledges Lunar Lander Crashed
They were literally coerced to making the admission by lawmakers, if it weren't for them they'd still be "analysing data".
roberson87··on Wes Bos made six figures from his JavaScript beginner course today
This guy's content is legit. Not only does he have a solid grasp of what he's talking about, he's an excellent teacher AND content creator. I went through a couple of his courses a while back including the one on CSS Grid and couldn't recommend his courses enough. I will get this course for my little brother.
roberson87··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
Some of my non-white friends who haven't been blessed with forward-thinking parents such as yours, who give their children civilized names nonetheless use Western names on their resume when job seeking. So I don't think having a government 'white name' is all the beneficiary for job seeking purposes.
roberson87··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
I am thankful for being born white.
roberson87··on Tiktok User Banned for Talking About China's Uighur 'Concentration Camps'
This is probably the dumbest take on a topic I've seen on HN. TikTok is not 'for' kids anymore than YouTube. They are both 13+.
roberson87··on Show HN: PNGR – Docker-compose for a Postgres-Nginx-Golang-React stack
I also use 'golang' exclusively when searching for go related stuff :) doesn't take away my point.
roberson87··on Show HN: PNGR – Docker-compose for a Postgres-Nginx-Golang-React stack
The language is called Go not golang [1].

roberson87··on Plaid Launches in France, Spain, and Ireland
>My point was that giving away username/password is a terrible idea from a privacy standpoint

I'm sure you know well the reasons for this. It is not practical to move large amounts of money via credit card due to the fees involved.

As for your point on transaction history, you could always create a separate account specifically for these type of situations where you're passing your login. Even if they get your transaction history, it would be very limited.

roberson87··on Plaid Launches in France, Spain, and Ireland
We're going back to square one with the 'empties my account' comment. You can mitigate that but changing your password pre/post transaction so the login you use is one-time. It is inconvenient, but worth it if you do not trust the vendor and want to avoid credit card fees. If you are concerned about them getting your past transactions, you can always create a new account, or even a new bank account just for use for these type of situations. There's still some transaction history, but not nearly as much as a day to day account. I do think there's a lot of value in Plaids services but having said that, it is all a work around due to the abysmal financial infrastructure of the USA and lack of real time payments. Plaid services and requiring bank logins to do transactions does seem a bit whack, but again US payment system is even whacker.
roberson87··on Plaid Launches in France, Spain, and Ireland
If you're happy to hand out your credit card details to Plaid and trust them enough to properly secure it, personally I wouldn't be concerned about them flagrantly and illegally retrieving my past transactions. There is no such thing as trust less financial services that deal with fiat currency.
roberson87··on Plaid Launches in France, Spain, and Ireland
I would rather have entered my logins and then changed the password if I was that concerned about entering my bank logins rather than pay those credit card fees. Or change the password first, login, and change back to your old password.
roberson87··on Nebula, Slack's Open Source Global Overlay Network
Sounds like a service mesh. How is this any difference to Istio/linkerd? This library may be useful, but the stated problem it seeks to solve is hardly a unique one.
roberson87··on “Why We Sleep” Is Riddled with Scientific and Factual Errors
Wow.....super disappointed to say the least. I actually bought the audiobook the other month and was looking to listening to it. I really enjoyed his episode on Joe Rogan and was the only one I've ever listened to twice. I don't understand why he would make up facts like fabricating statements from WHO? These are amateur mistakes a smart man doesn't make, which I'm sure Walker is (?). I haven't even finished reading this article but this part stood out:

"Walker’s book has likely wasted thousands of hours of life and worsened the health of people who read it and took its recommendations at face value."

First part is dubious but second part, seriously? How can extra of sleep "worsen" the health of people?

roberson87··on How We Built a Vectorized SQL Engine
Thanks for your input. I have no exp at all on db internals, but could you expand your thoughts on the possibility of moving critical (storage layer?) parts to Rust and leave all the networking stuff/rest in Go? Similar to what TiDb have done?
