ro_bit··on Randar: A Minecraft exploit that uses LLL lattice reduction to crack server RNG
Between nocom and this I'm sure at least a dozen people who had no idea about reverse engineering are going to eventually have a career in it thanks to his videos, even if I find them incredibly cheesy. His videos have a habit of reaching and engrossing all sorts of people who otherwise wouldn't really care about minecraft server exploits, and maybe that will inspire some of them to learn more

Thanks for the writeup!

ro_bit··on Rant: I'm one year in at a big tech company, and I hate it
Ah, my mistake. If it isn't entry level this is realistic. I'll edit my comment
ro_bit··on Rant: I'm one year in at a big tech company, and I hate it
While the sentiments might be popular, I think this is fake. There are only a few trillion dollar companies, and none of them are offering 250k entry level SWE (highest I see is 180, but I haven't checked thorougly)

E: This comment was made under the false assumption that the original poster was entry level. Since it's implied they aren't, it could be very real.

ro_bit··on I asked ChatGPT to write the code to print "Hello, world " as a junior developer
I don't get it. I'm only starting my career but most of the tenured/senior developers I know spend too much time in meetings to write that much boilerplate
ro_bit··on Twstalker.com as a Twitter alternative front end
Yeah this seems to be pretty sketchy, which is disappointing because I've been looking for an alternative to nitter since it went down. It's a shame that a lot of the content creators I follow use twitter to post updates and schedules and that without nitter you can't view posts in chronological order. Does anyone know an alternative to viewing twitter feeds without an account? I made an account (no vpn, no tor) but it immediately got banned and asked me for a phone number/legal identification.
ro_bit··on PaperMC/Paper: The most widely used, high performance Minecraft server
Interestingly enough, CB wasn't DMCAed by Mojang, but actually from one of its contributors, who was angry that he had been contributing free labor to a project that was secretly owned by Mojang (there was no CLA so he was legally able to take down the project by not authorizing his contributions to be used). There was a whole lot of drama and conflicting viewpoints around about this, but here's a post about it that I think stays pretty close to just the facts. https://blog.jwf.io/2020/04/open-source-minecraft-bukkit-gpl... ro_bit··on PaperMC/Paper: The most widely used, high performance Minecraft server
Pterodactyl is a commonly used one as the other comments say, but just to give some background, Pterodactyl itself, rather than being a minecraft server hosting software, is actually a generic server hosting software that can be used pretty effectively with a lot of games or even webservers. The base configuration of a pterodactyl managed instance is an egg, which is basically a docker image wrapped in a bunch of configurations[1]. This means you can run any docker container in pterodactyl and manage it all through a fairly slick web panel[2] which allows you to easily tweak things like memory allocation, send commands directly to the console, and share access with other accounts. There's lots of eggs already configured for minecraft and other games like Rust (not the programming language), so a lot of the complexity of setting up a docker container is abstracted away and for a non-advanced user its a pretty nice balance between the ease of use for a realm and the extensibility of a full server.

ro_bit··on PaperMC/Paper: The most widely used, high performance Minecraft server
Paper itself is a series of patches over the official vanilla server implementation. You can convert a vanilla server to a paper server just by replacing the vanilla server.jar file with a paper server.jar one, and converting back to a vanilla server can be done fairly easily (but a bit more difficult than dropping in)

It's much, much more performant, and able to handle a lot more players/chunks loaded/etc on the same setup compared to a vanilla server. Along with significant performance improvements out of the box, it also adds more configurations (vanilla has server.properties, but papermc adds paper.yml) which allow you to hand tune optimizations[1], from things like disabling player collisions, disabling block updates for certain laggy blocks, etc. These changes are configurable because they trade off expected vanilla behavior for better performance.

The real strength of paper though is that they do all this while also implementing the spigot API, which enables paper server owners to use a wide variety of server mods[2] that can allow you to add things like minigames, anticheat, etc while still being compatible with unmodified clients.

ro_bit··on Boeing 777 loses tire while taking off from SF, crushing cars on the ground
Why did the plane go all the way to LAX rather than landing back at SFO? It clearly seemed to be considered serious since there were emergency vehicles by the runway as a precaution. Is it easier to divert to LAX rather than land back at SFO in this situation?
ro_bit··on U.S. students will take the SAT online
I did seriously consider charging back, but considering it would probably get me banned from taking further tests and a couple grad schools I was applying to wanted the scores, I didn't pursue it.

I mentioned it in a few other replies, but my intent was just to show that I didnt need to cheat. I really dont think GRE scores are worth bragging about and I wish I could go back and edit my comment seeing as it clearly didn't come across as intended.

ro_bit··on U.S. students will take the SAT online
You're right. I misremembered. I went back to check the reports. I ended up with a perfect score in math (which is only 96th according to the score report and 1 point off on the reading section, which was 99th.

I only brought up the scores to indicate that I didn't need to cheat. I don't think GRE scores are a valid metric of competency or anything worth bragging about. I'm sorry it was taken in another way

ro_bit··on U.S. students will take the SAT online
Ah, I misread the article. I completely missed the line mentioning that the test was still inperson, and thought that the "bring your own device" thing implied remote testing. I'm glad it's still an in-person proctored exam, since then if people have issues with their own devices they can hopefully switch to a provided one
ro_bit··on U.S. students will take the SAT online
I don't think anyone in their right mind brags about GRE scores, and I'm sorry it came off that way. I mentioned it solely because as other comments said, I have no reason to cheat.
ro_bit··on U.S. students will take the SAT online
This is a great step for accessibility, but will not go well with Collegeboard's level of incompetence. I took the GRE (administered by the same company that owns collegeboard) remotely online and as soon as I started the test their absolute spyware of a lockdown browser immediately closed. Despite me passing the system check immediately before the test, the lockdown browser thought I was cheating and immediately shut off the test without recourse. After waiting 2 weeks, they came back saying they would not refund me and despite some back and forth, the rep I was interacting with seemed convinced I was cheating and would not give me any further details on how to prevent the issue in the future or any way to further appeal my case or get a refund.

I retook the test a couple months later inperson at a testing center (where they used computers with the same lockdown browser) and got 99th percentile scores on everything, and I would recommend anyone planning to take the SAT to still take it at a testing center.

ro_bit··on Smashmallow, Silicon Valley's Failed Marshmallow Startup
> Smashmallow fired the teams who had been slabbing its product. But when the Tanis machine finally arrived at the Wolfgang facility in August 2019 and Hoj's team spun it up, the marshmallow printer failed to print.

Is this a normal practice in food manufacturing when bringing up a new technology? Why wouldn't they keep the hand production for as long as it took to get Wolfgang up? The company was making 15MM, but maybe the margins were still too slim for them to do both?

ro_bit··on Smashmallow, Silicon Valley's Failed Marshmallow Startup
I agree. The otherwise decent writing and interesting topic for the rest of the article was ruined by the breathless journalism hypewords at the beginning, and the insistent negative intonation throughout. I especially didn't like how the author lambasted Sebastian for wanting to expand his business past a regional boutique seller ("Rather than trying to blow the company up into another Krave-size winner, Sebastiani could have just … stopped.")
ro_bit··on Alaska Airlines 737 Max makes emergency landing due to depressurization
> Alaska flight 1282 left Portland just after 5pm local time on Friday when an emergency door blew out at 16,000 feet.

If this happened at cruising altitude with a higher pressure differential, would the plane survive? (I know generally the door won't open at that altitude since they open inward, but I assume the same forces wouldn't do anything to prevent a window blowout)

ro_bit··on When do "brains beat brawn" in chess? An experiment
I wonder if there would be a way to train Stockfish to be better at playing with odds. I do not know much about chess, but I doubt the AI was trained on how to play openings when starting at a disadvantage, so maybe one could see a vast improvement on AI playing with odds if the AI was specifically trained/designed to do so

ro_bit··on Man found UC Berkeley skeleton in 2021
> On Sunday evening, the contractor told The Scanner that, while he was still upset about the supervisor's apparent silence — and that UC Berkeley had not hired his firm in months despite years of collaboration — it had been a relief in January to see the police at work.

Is there any law that covers the contractors against retaliation like this? It seems like there should be an investigation into the university for not reporting this to the police immediately, but the article doesn't mention anything. To me, the contractors didn't just report a suspicious death, but also are blowing the whistle on some negligence or even a coverup by the university.
