rnmwfQ3f··on Funder bars university from grant programme over white-male award line-up
So the issue isn't event that they didn't give awards to women or ethnic minorities, it's that the women and ethnic minorities weren't available for the group photo.

This response makes no sense.

The decision, announced by the Snow Medical Research Foundation on 7 March, comes after the
University of Melbourne released a picture of six white men — but no women or people of colour
    — receiving honorary degrees, one of the university’s highest accolades, in a ceremony on 28
    February

    ...

James McCluskey, deputy vice-chancellor of research at the university, says that other people,
including three women and an Indigenous man, were scheduled to receive honorary awards that day
but weren’t able to make it.
rnmwfQ3f··on A new history of Byzantium reveals the inner workings of a late antique empire
The Ottomans were already ruling most of the Byzantine empire by the time they took Constantinople.

I think the same arguments could be applied to the USA
rnmwfQ3f··on A new history of Byzantium reveals the inner workings of a late antique empire
The Ottoman Empire was the continuation of the Roman Empire, not the end of it.

If you were a Greek living in the Byzantine Empire – or as they described themselves, a Roman living in the Roman Empire – the Ottomans were just the new Roman Emperors. The Roman bureaucracy, civil institutions, and daily life changed very little.

People don't normally acknowledge it because both the Holy Roman Empire and the Russian Empire wanted to be recognised as successors to the Roman Empire, but the truth is that the Ottomans were the real successors.

rnmwfQ3f··on Understanding the War in Ukraine
According to who?

Apparently Zelenskyy thought Ukraine had a chance of joining NATO, and was actively partnering with NATO.

I don't see any reason why Ukraine couldn't join us.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021%E2%80%932022_Russo-Ukrain...:

On 14 September 2020, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved Ukraine's new National Security Strategy, "which provides for the development of the distinctive partnership with NATO with the aim of membership in NATO." On 24 March 2021, Zelenskyy signed the Decree No. 117/2021 approving the "strategy of de-occupation and reintegration of the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol."

This was a great video.
rnmwfQ3f··on Supreme Court will decide whether web designer has right to turn away gay couple

    > With the new case, “we are witness yet again to the unrelenting anti-LGBTQ
    > crusade being waged by self-described Christian fundamentalist legal groups
    > aiming to chip away at the hard-won gains of LGBTQ people by carving out swaths

It's hard for me to understand how someone doesn't see conservative Christians are on the defensive in these cases.

LGBT groups are getting massive support from governments, NGOs, corporations, etc. Acceptance is being promoted in virtually every media and you are generally considered an evil person for holding views about homosexuality that would have been normal 30 years ago.

Conservative Christians on the other hand are just praying their livelihood won't be the target of activists today.

rnmwfQ3f··on Asian Boss planted deep blue YouTuber and pretended he was a 'man on the street'
My wife is Taiwanese, so I can confirm Taiwanese and Chinese get along fine. Many marriages, friendships and business partnerships cross the Taiwan Strait.

However Taiwanese people don't use their passport to travel to China. China doesn't recognise it. They are issued a travel permit by the PRC, similar to citizens of Hong Kong and Macau.

rnmwfQ3f··on Young Dems more likely to despise the other party
Here's the question:

Would you __________ someone who voted for the opposing presidential candidate?
Where the blank is "go on a date with", "be friends with", "work for", "shop at or support the business of"...

Important to point out that stated preferences are not actual preferences. There's a pretty good change a lot of them who say they wouldn't be friends with a Republican actually would be friends with a Republican if they found themselves in that situation.

rnmwfQ3f··on Young Dems more likely to despise the other party
Of course. There's a reason why "shy conservatives" are a thing.
rnmwfQ3f··on Barbados’s long-drawn-out promise of a republic
Why is that absurd?
