rnk··on Device keeps brain alive, functioning separate from body
I think we have enough resources to go around now. We just don't allocate them fairly. People and companies like making money and resist change, resist other technologies and sabotage them politically, as an example.
rnk··on Buddhist office turns to Thai cyber police over AI-generated Facebook content
Just look at news.google.com, at the end there's always a list of recent possible fake videos and photos that were investigated. There's usually a mix of results T/F.
rnk··on Seeing like a bank
When I worked at google they made all the devs in my team take the anti-money-laundering class. It was pretty basic stuff like "don't carry a suitcase full of cash across international boundaries". I remember everyone was amazed that I passed the test. And it must have been suspicious ;-)
rnk··on How did people deal with punch cards?
I used to know some jcl, those were the days. It was used in a few "advanced" classes when I was an undergrad. Was that the one that had the little hello pamplet with details, or was that yellow pamplet describing sys/360 assembly.
rnk··on How did people deal with punch cards?
My dad told me you were supposed to make a diagonal line across your cards with a magic marker incase that happened so you could put them back together.

My first year in college was the first year they didn't use punched cards at my college.

I'm not making decisions for society. I'm reporting the current reality. Consider looking at the disastrous situation in California for people with hydrogen powered cars. Typical discussion is at https://www.reddit.com/r/Mirai/comments/17md2gr/called_toyot...

I'm all in favor of alternatives for gasoline. We just need some that don't perpetuate carbon fuel use. The mirai folks end up paying way more for hydrogen than gas, way way more in that subreddit, run into unavailability of fuel, the stations break and aren't repaired. I was quite surprised when I came upon the discussions there. When or if we can create h fuel without using lots of fossil fuel and energy it would be great. Today it's primarily companies and govts perpetuating their industrial bases in Japan that seem to be pushing hydrogen.

rnk··on Google ends deal to build 15,000 Bay Area homes due to "market conditions"
And our world is without reliable 30 minute pizza delivery by mafia owned pizza chains. At least no one gets pooned.
rnk··on Google ends deal to build 15,000 Bay Area homes due to "market conditions"
The us is in desperate shape with the housing policies that we have leading to a tremendous lack of housing availability in many large cities in the west where it's harder to spread out. California but also Seattle is another city. There's a shortage of housing, the housing that exists gets more expensive because there's more competition to get in, people are pushed farther out, the high prices push many to eventually living in cars, there's no place for low income people to go. This contrasts with Chicago where there's apparently a lot of low income housing.

This high price of living is also another cause of lower birthrates among young people today, because everything is harder and more expensive.

rnk··on Verizon, AT&T customers sue to undo T-Mobile merger
yields of course layoffs. Tmobile has been laying off people with the reason being overlap between the companies.
rnk··on Roman coins discovered in the waters of Sardinia
And the uk has that interesting policy where I believe the govt owns any treasure you find. Is it that way in the EU? In the us I believe you own it if you find something, but we don't seem to have as much treasure sitting around everywhere.
rnk··on Solar energy storage breakthrough could make households self-sufficient
The problem is there's no practical green hydrogen today. It comes from basically boiling/splitting water or extracted from natural gas or other fossil fuels. And the energy you could use to make the hydrogen could more efficiently just be used as electricity and stored in an ev battery. When/if we figure out how to efficiently separate hydrogen from water we can come back to it.
rnk··on Some VA. lawmakers say it's time to eliminate daylight saving time
Yes, we need to move to dst in the north but other places would prefer it too. If the rest of the continental us didn't move together, I don't think it would happen. standard time (not daylight savings time) is what we want to get out of.

The problem for northern states is the sun goes down too early. Right now, Minneapolis sun up at 7am, down at 4:54. Seattle 7, down 4:44, chicago 6:28 to 4:38.

https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/minneapolis is one way to visualize (there's a graph at the bottom showing the dst/st change). A few days ago in the northern latitudes it was sun up at 7:50p, down at 6pm. Now it's an hour earlier. It's much nicer to push sundown an hour later.

rnk··on Some VA. lawmakers say it's time to eliminate daylight saving time
The senate passed a law to move to DST, the house did not. Many states want to change to DST permanently. Some details at https://www.timeanddate.com/news/time/us-permanent-dst.html.
rnk··on No dogs were harmed in the making of this app
You are assuming it goes backwards or uphill. Better test that with a unit test.
rnk··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
He had so much working capital to play with, and he could have gotten huge amounts of more money to invest based on his crypto genius reputation, he could have probably gotten 100 million to make more of those random investments and hoped one would hit. Meanwhile, he could have paid himself a few million dollar salary. I read somehow a few of his random investments did succeed in having much larger value, maybe it was anthropic. Instead he'll be a prisoner for a long time.

His parents are charged too, will they end up in prison?

rnk··on Pix2tex: Using a ViT to convert images of equations into LaTeX code
Good suggestion, but maybe shooting too high. Checks off the "in the mountains" part of my fantasy life. But a place that has seminars for grad students and working physicists and has many Nobel laureates who attended as students may be above my intellectual grade.
rnk··on Pix2tex: Using a ViT to convert images of equations into LaTeX code
Looks like a horror show to me. Makes me feel embarrassed at leaving my math bs behind and going into cs. I have an insane retirement idea of retiring to some fun mountain town and going to grad school in physics. Where's the best place to go skiing with a college that takes old washed up programmers as students?

I'm a software engineer & a swing dancer. Triple step! Unclear how in demand the combo of these capabilities are, but it's low.
rnk··on Apple unveils the new MacBook Pro featuring the M3 family of chips
That's a complicated story. No one really wants surveillance capitalism. I don't think google copies what I'm doing on my chromebook, but almost every website has google tracking. Chrome has google tracking. You can use non-chrome browsers on chrome os, they are all there via the linux subsystem. You can also run the android ones.
rnk··on How to Use Raspberry Pi Secure Boot [pdf]
The url with the doc is actually https://pip.raspberrypi.com/categories/685-whitepapers-app-n.... That original link is some kind of xml doc.
rnk··on Atari Video Music
The 70s were the age of 8 bit tech glory. I wish I could go back then and experience (again) all the new things that became ubiquitous, the glorious age of video game saloons, the use of that technology in movies and tv at the beginning. I was just the right age to experience star wars, video games, early home computers and it's when I started programming in atari basic and then hand assembled 6502 assembler. I even had that basic programming atari video game cartridge.

Those were the days!

rnk··on Apple unveils the new MacBook Pro featuring the M3 family of chips
They are in use by the millions in schools. I have one and I really like, can run android apps, chrome web browser, and in the crostini linux system I can run any apps, dev tools, web browsers, emacs, and it is native. I like it better than raw linux because of the built in android support.

I gave chromeos laptops to my family because they aren't trustworthy. Now they have reliable laptops and don't get virus infections or os problems.

Those two first things have sure been tried, over and over as everyone knows. I said the obviousness of banning monero next was separate from whether it's a good idea.
rnk··on Return To Office is all about power
That's how it usually ends up. I worked at a company where devs had their own private offices, it was heaven. Now I work at home where I have a private office instead of a shared office space with no privacy, loud noises, and and nothing of mine is there because no one owns an office.

Best comment of the year. Maybe she's hoping to be rescued if she can get her old job back without so much conflict ;-)
rnk··on Return To Office is all about power
The point that I think you are missing is that I don't want to work in an office if I can avoid it, and it's not because the office or company is evil. I just choose not to do that if I have that choice; I have worked in offices in cities around me for 20 years. I am making different choices, today there's no shortage of work without in-person. I have been looking for a new job and every company with rto has kind of defensive recruiters, please tell us before you go ahead with an interview loop if you won't rto. I almost feel sorry for them. If you paid me lots more than wfh I might consider them, but that's not what they are doing.

I was talking with one of the top 3 cloud provider companies. They said you must rto but everyone you'd be working with is in another city 1000 miles away. You can work in any of our 3 local offices because you'll just be in online meetings with them, it doesn't matter because there's no one to work with here. That's the crazyness and endless complaints about some RTO. It's great that you respect your workers, that is appreciated and not universal.

rnk··on Return To Office is all about power
I understand your point, of course everyone is not evil and whatever. But you also sunk money into your office, maybe you signed a long term lease or own office buildings. Even if you don't own it, you put time and effort into it and don't want to give it up. As a potential employee, I don't care if the company put money into their office, I don't want to ride the bus both ways and suffer a half hour or more each way to go there. I'm only taking work from home jobs. I'm switching and interviewed with a big company and medium companies. The big company insisted on 3 day a week in office time, I got an offer for similar money and said no. Actually I got two offers for wfh companies, I just stopped waiting on other big co to get through their interview process.

Yes, that's where I think financial regulators are heading. And anyone who thinks for one second of course sees that these are also problems with cash that drug cartels deal with by sending bales of $100 bills around. And so we added kyc and discourage cash.

I don't think you can ban people doing crypto entirely, but you can make the financial exchange points where cash goes in and out ever more difficult.

rnk··on Mysterious bylines appeared on a USA Today site. Did these writers exist?
When you thought something could be automated by ai, were you thinking soon? Like say adjusting memory and gc settings for java in a running app? I just don't see ai solving problems that I run into like that in the next few years. I do see ai helping people write much more code maybe, work in domains that they don't understand well (I want to add new php functions to do blah to extend my company's website, but i don't know anything about php).

So write me prototype code to do something that I can describe in brief, but skeptical of doing things that are futzing with per-application use case cloud settings. I don't want to have to learn how you adjust foo or bar or baz on google cloud and aws and azure and ... - automating that is useful. I'd like to automate say java memory changes, but making the gc system do it without me needing to change flags is even better.

rnk··on Intel Is Counting on AI Inference to Save the Xeon CPU
My tl;dr is Intel datacenter revenue declined so much that it has lost most of the previous huge profits. GPU workloads don't look like they will save them from amd and nvidia competition. They have time and money and new products coming that they think will save them.
