rnjesus··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
ban all the things! think of the children!
rnjesus··on Japan tested a giant turbine that generates electricity using deep ocean current
even if it does, all they have to do is just keep swimming
rnjesus··on Picasso's self portrait evolution from age 15 to age 90
his point is that the skill does not lie in the manual process of making the art, but in the process of _creating_ the art. copying something (even with a high degree of precision) is less difficult than imagining the thing in the first place.
rnjesus··on Ask HN: Is it true that any community that grows big enough, gets ruined?
>…5 people…

i must be really unique ._.

rnjesus··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
for a neat visualization of this, https://www.htwins.net/scale2/ — it’s a bit old now, so to view it on mobile the app is pretty much required. i can’t remember exactly what i paid for it on the app store, but i know it’s been worth the few dollars
rnjesus··on Eero Pro 6E and Eero 6 Review: Fast and Easy
it doesn’t need to be rebooted every month because it automatically downloads and installs updates and forces a network reboot without a notification, warning, or the ability to schedule, defer, or opt out.

more than once now, i’ve been up late doing some work and had my whole network drop out without notice or explanation. it turned out to be from the eero doing a update. they say they do this because of liability from security vulnerabilities, or something, but it is supremely annoying.

rnjesus··on Daily coffee may benefit the heart
according to wikipedia, coffee contains MAOIs, which i imagine are not the kind of drug you can just stop talking suddenly. it’d be interesting if a pharmacist could chime in with their thoughts on this

rnjesus··on Apple’s Universal Control
yeah, i can understand that. i should have mentioned that i’m using an m1 mac, and as far as i understand it, there’s no extra overhead on the developer side for enabling an ios app to be downloaded from the app store and used by someone with an m1 + macos. it’s actually something the developer has to explicitly disallow (someone should correct me if i’m mistaken).
rnjesus··on Apple’s Universal Control
i use an ios chinese dictionary called pleco that, for some reason, the developers don’t allow to be installed on macos. i primarly use my macbook to study, and before this update, i just checked definitions using the app on my phone. now, i have my ipad directly next to my macbook on a stand, and i can easily drag the mouse across and and look up entries without needing to unlock my phone and peck out or copy/paste characters. these kind of small optimizations to workflow are really helpful.
rnjesus··on China's state media buys Meta ads pushing Russia's line on war
while i was replying to you, i meant “you” in general. his point is a valid one: that most people simply take the information that’s presented to them, and, despite knowing what the source of that information is, choose to believe it at face-value. whether this news is from state-controlled media or the new york times or wherever, people ignore the known fact that their news source is likely biased in some way and, without bothering to do any research themselves, let that news shape their opinions.
rnjesus··on China's state media buys Meta ads pushing Russia's line on war
his point is, have _you_ translated these things for yourself or just relied on someone else to do so?
rnjesus··on Apple Mac Studio
gaming isn’t terrible on mac. i’ve recently played factorio, ai war 2, this war of mine, sayonara, the pathless, and some other random apple arcade and steam games without any issue on my 13” m1 mbp. i also played sniper elite 3 on it via stadia, and the experience was quite good.
rnjesus··on Russians are trying to flee – data from Google Trends
*invade finland again

i think it’s unlikely, too, but if the past few weeks have taught us anything, it’s that russia likes to repeat its past conquests

rnjesus··on A UX designer walks into a Tesla Bar
i use the caps lock key to swap keyboard languages. it’s a default option in the keys’ advanced settings, and it works wonderfully well (you can still invoke caps lock by long-pressing the key, too).
rnjesus··on Boeing 777 departing Dubai nearly had a major incident after takeoff
that really makes me curious.. so can you retract landing gear if you’re not airborne? is there not a sensor to prevent this?

rnjesus··on Apple broke up with me
maybe you wouldn’t mind me asking: but how’s your setup work exactly?

also, for everyone: i have been looking for an easy way to allow my parents to browse torrents (via an app on their phones or tv or something), then select what they want to watch, and the movies/whatever are then downloaded on a remote pc that also hosts a plex server. they could watch whatever on plex in minutes, ideally. is there something that sreamlines this kind of thing?

rnjesus··on FAA Fumbled Its Response to a Surge in GPS Jamming
curious question: can navigational computers (on planes, though maybe this can be asked about other systems as well) not take an initial position-reading from gps or radio and then compute their location then-on based on internal gyros, compasses, accelerometers, etc.? if outside navigation aids fail, are these systems not capable of internally simulating and determining their own position, or am i underestimating how much compute power this would take?
rnjesus··on It's weird that most of “Hacker” news is dominated by business news
sorry, non-native english speaker asking: what’s “a hack on elisp to cancel threads” mean here?
rnjesus··on Super Mario 64 has been ported to iOS
oh thank god. i had ben looking for this extension for ios. just bought it, and it works great — thank you
rnjesus··on Apple to face EU antitrust charge over NFC chip
you can use “what if” to create literally any scenario you want, and this is the best you could come up with? cmon, how am i supposed to be entertained by HN comments that don’t push the boundaries of creative writing :(
rnjesus··on Ocean drone captures video from inside a hurricane
about a year and a half ago i had the exact same thought, only i was watching a live stream on my phone of the iss crew doing an eva to repair a component. i was genuinely awestruck at the fact that i could see humans servicing a space station — live — whilst i was on the toilet.
rnjesus··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
you’re welcome. i’m a bit low on sleep so i missed part of your question, and don’t think the video addresses it — that is, are two [cotton] masks more effective than one. i honestly think that this is an interesting question. for most people, their intuition would be to answer “probably,” but i suspect there are some complexities that someone smarter than i am would have to address.

wearing two masks instead of one wouldn’t make things worse, though. but better? again, good question.

rnjesus··on Cannabis use and myocardial infarction in young adults: a cross-sectional study
yeah, agreed. that was the point i was trying to make to the parent comment — that this behavior isn’t exclusive to the “right” or “left.” it’s a people problem. or, more exactly, it’s a religion problem (not in the sense of spiritual faiths, but in the tendency for people to seek out and congregate around a shared system of beliefs.. and then stick to those beliefs beyond all reason).
rnjesus··on Cannabis use and myocardial infarction in young adults: a cross-sectional study
while i don’t disagree with you at all, it’s not just from the right. the whole anti-vaccination movement started on the opposite side of the political rainbow.
