rmorrison··on Startups, Fix Your "From" Field
Related: I don't understand why companies use a "noreply@..." email address. Why not make it easy for a customer to give you feedback?
rmorrison··on Request for Startups: Kill Hollywood.
It's definitely possible to kill hollywood, think about how Old Time Radio was killed by TV.

However, whatever kills Hollywood must revolve around storytelling and not just generic entertainment. People won't completely move away from story-based entertainment.

rmorrison··on Ask HN: Is there a repository of failed startups (re-usable startups idea)?
You're probably better off going after proven, successful ideas than failed ones. Friendster, MySpace, TiVo, Palm pilot, Blackberry, Alta vista, were all up and dominated their markets when a new competitor took over.

The value is more in the execution than the idea.

rmorrison··on Grit & Determination
Grit, as described by Adam, is one of the most important attributes of a successful entrepreneur. Both my cofounder and I believe this strongly, and have discussed this since the early days of founding our company. We still believe it wholeheartedly today.
rmorrison··on New York vs San Francisco in fight for tech start-ups
Even in the video, they're both talking more about Silicon Valley than NYC = )
rmorrison··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (December 2011)
Comprehend Systems (YC W11) is hiring Java developers

Our first product targets clinical trial data, which is an area where there is a lot of pain and we understand well. The software you will write will directly affect people's lives, helping to get new treatments to market faster.

The core technology itself, however, is applicable to every industry, and once we solve this problem for life sciences we're going to solve it universally.

We offer benefits, including: Free lunch and dinner, Generous equity, Competitive salary, Gym membership, Healthcare, Top of the line computer setup of your choice: Debian, OS X, Windows, etc, and Flexible vacation time

We're hiring entrepreneurial developers only! Learn about startups from the inside.

rmorrison··on Google ate my email address
I wish Google had some form of reasonable technical support. That way, HN homepage wouldn't be the only way to get their attention.
rmorrison··on Comprehend Systems (YC W11) Closes $1.2mm Seed Round
We've been working on that ever since we picked up comprehend.com = )
rmorrison··on Insights on the Y Combinator interview
Since it's only ten minutes, it's pretty hectic as the YC partners try to understand the company/team. Because of the time constraint, they interrupt you, and they even interrupt each other.

It's on the interviewee to get his or her key points across. Go in knowing the three or four main bullet points you want to convey, and make sure you get them out.

rmorrison··on NYC isn't catching the Valley anytime soon: Reflections on Startup School
I've lived in both NY and Silicon Valley. I think the best description of the difference in mentality is:

In NYC, if you can make a million dollars cool, but it's even better if you screw somebody out of a million at the same time. In Silicon Valley, if you make a million dollars cool, but it's even better if you help somebody else make a million at the same time.

rmorrison··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (October 2011)

rmorrison··on Y Combinator by the Numbers
Yes, it takes time to build a successful company. A company doesn't exit for $200 million the year it is incorporated. Come back in 3 or 4 years, and I think you'll see the hit rate has gone up!
rmorrison··on Awesome Services We Pay for at HelloFax
Our startup uses several of the products on the list, but there is a one big name missing: Hellofax

We use Hellofax several times a week and it's great! It makes signing and faxing documents extremely easy, instead of the mess it used to be.

rmorrison··on First employee of startup? You are probably getting screwed
1) You need a cofounder, for all practical purposes. So that costs more.

2) It'll probably take you longer than 1 year to make $50k/year/cofounder, so in your scenario you run the risk of running out of money after the second year.

3) In your scenario you have to wait a year to start. Plus, you run the risk of getting trapped in the job. Life happens, who knows what your circumstances will be like in a year or two.

And most importantly of all:

4) You'll be 100x better prepared after working at a real startup for a few years. All of the books and blogs are no replacement for real startup experience.

rmorrison··on First employee of startup? You are probably getting screwed
If you can start one then great, but it's difficult to get your own startup to the point where it is paying you and your cofounder's living expenses.

Most likely, starting your own company consists of working a full time job and half-assing a startup on the side. A much better first step is to immerse yourself in an existing startup, plus you'll have the added bonus of a large financial upside.

Besides the financial risks of starting a company, it's extremely helpful to learn from existing entrepreneurs, which you also get working at a startup.

rmorrison··on First employee of startup? You are probably getting screwed
This post is missing the most valuable part of working at a startup: the experience.

Sure, you can go work at ________ (big company paying fresh developers $120k+), but you're going to be pigeonholed into working on a small aspect of the product/company.

If you join a promising small startup, you're going to learn about all aspects of business, startups, selling, marketing, fundraising, etc. These skills will be extremely helpful to you throughout the rest of your career, especially if you plan to start your own company someday.

rmorrison··on AeroFS - File Sync Without Servers
Our whole company has been using AeroFS exclusively for our network drives, and it's worked extremely well! It's great because we can share files of any size, and it seamlessly updates between all machines.
rmorrison··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (August 2011)
Yes, if it's a good fit.

rmorrison··on Our Startup's One Guiding Principle
There is nothing wrong with a little swagger, or confidence. However, adopting "no assholes" isn't quite enough: a non-asshole can still let their ego get in the way of their work and their team. For example, by refusing to admit fault.

Congrats guys!
rmorrison··on Dropbox Hits 25 Millions Users, 200 Million Files Per Day
Wow, the most impressive thing here is the exponential growth: 2 million users in late 2009, 4 million mid 2010, 25 million now.
rmorrison··on Oracle gives up on OpenOffice after community forks the project
This seems like a dangerous precedent for Oracle to set for itself, especially when it's sitting on many other popular open source projects.

Not that this comparison is 100% accurate, but they could learn from why the police don't give in to terrorist demands.

rmorrison··on Infographic charting every introduction leading to AppMakr's $1MM funding round
This is awesome! I'd love to learn more about each of the datapoints involved. Here are just a few ideas of other dimensions that it'd be interesting to see:

* Type of investor/institution/etc

* How many investments each point makes per year, and the average size.

* How many communications were required for each investor. How many meetings? How many emails?

* Whether or not each subsequent investor knew about some or all of the previous ones.

There are a ton others questions. I'd love to see this for more rounds too!

rmorrison··on San Francisco Doing Everything It Can To Drive Zynga And Twitter Away
Wow. My company has been trying to decide between setting up our HQ in San Francisco or further down the bay. I think we have our answer.
