rmbryan··on Maciej Ceglowski Addresses US Congress [pdf]
For my money, it's worth reading just for dude's tone and clarity.

Who can argue with this, from the next to last page: "For sixty years, we have called the threat of totalitarian surveillance ‘Orwellian’, but the word no longer fits the threat. The better word now may be ‘Californian’. A truly sophisticated system of social control, of the kind being pioneered in China, will not compel obedience, but nudge people towards it. Rather than censoring or punishing those who dissent, it will simply make sure their voices are not heard. It will reward complacent behavior, and sideline troublemakers. It’s even possible that, judiciously wielded, such a system of social control might enjoy wide public support in our own country."

I mean to say, agree or disagree, that's solid writing.

rmbryan··on Creating an Institution That Lasts 10k Years
hprotagonist on a Stephenson thread, glorious.
rmbryan··on When Engineers Become Whistleblowers
... by Ralph Nader

“the [engineering] profession must assert itself towards its most magnificent aspirations—for so much of our future is in your trust.”

rmbryan··on Dapps Need Dapp Services
Before I get all excited about this: https://www.dapp.com/token/Dapp_WhitePaper_en.pdf

What am I missing? Why is this a doomed, pointless, quixotic waste of time? It looks like a good fit for moving toward better things. I must be missing something important.

rmbryan··on Windows Terminal
Saving you a click: "The Windows Terminal is in the very early alpha stage, and not ready for the general public quite yet. If you want to jump in early, you can try building it yourself from source.

Otherwise, you'll need to wait until Mid-June for an official preview build to drop"

rmbryan··on Rolling your own servers with Kubernetes
The next-to-last line cracked me up: "The costs can be much lower… or much higher!"
rmbryan··on All extensions disabled due to expiration of intermediate signing cert
Update: We have rolled out a partial fix for this issue. We generated a new intermediate certificate with the same name/key but an updated validity window and pushed it out to users via Normandy (this should be most users). Users who have Normandy on should see their add-ons start working over the next few hours. We are continuing to work on packaging up the new certificate for users who have Normandy disabled.

rmbryan··on My Reverse College Application
Full disclosure, I did get into two schools in the fall which I am excited to attend.

How does that work? The whole lead in was specific about complete failure.

rmbryan··on Google Staffers Share Stories of ‘Systemic’ Retaliation

rmbryan··on A Man Who’s Going to Save Your Neighborhood Grocery Store
I love this sentence from the article: “I make my living convincing male skeptics of the power of emotions,” he says.
rmbryan··on The Most Revolutionary Philosopher Since Plato?
The answer is "No."

Peguy is not the most revolutionary philosopher since Plato.

Evidence: "It is for this reason that his stylistic response to Bergson exceeds that of the modernists: he is not interested, as with Marcel Proust or Virginia Woolf, in merely reporting the supposed “givens” of subjective consciousness and memory (which is in effect to reduce Bergsonism to phenomenology), nor in expressing pure symbolic replicas of duration that are then paradoxically timeless, as in the case of sheerly abstract art."

rmbryan··on Potato farmers cry foul as PepsiCo sues them
The heart of the article: "PepsiCo has invoked Section 64 of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FR) Act, 2001 to claim infringement of its rights. However, farmers groups cite Section 39 of the same Act, which specifically says that a farmer is allowed “to save, use, sow, resow, exchange, share or sell his farm produce including seed of a variety protected under this Act” so long as he does not sell “branded seed”.
rmbryan··on MuseNet
MuseNet will play an experimental concert today from 12-3p PT livestreamed on our Twitch channel. No human (including us) has ever heard these pieces before, so this will be an interesting showcase of MuseNet’s strengths and weaknesses. Through May 12th, we’re also inviting everyone to try out our prototype MuseNet-powered music generation tool.

rmbryan··on Bullshitters: Who Are They and What Do We Know about Their Lives? [pdf]
It's important to note that this study focuses on data from 15-year-olds taking a math test. I assert that drawing broad conclusions based on that sample is suspect and may be, in fact, bullshit itself.

rmbryan··on The yodeler who sued Yahoo
I will always pronounce "capsule" with the Jean-Luc Picard glide, and you can't stop me. Capshule-corp.
rmbryan··on Leisure Is Our Killer App
The article builds up to this: "By encouraging our minds to wander, leisure activities pull us out of our present reality, which in turn can improve our ability to generate novel ideas or ways of thinking."

Then wraps up and ends.

We don't have a killer app.
