rlv-dan··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
Don't know about Australia. It's available in Sweden though, so it's not only for US.

If you are looking for an alternative navigation app I can recommend giving Magic Earth a try. Simple, clear and free. Nice developers that answers your mail. It even supports Android Auto.

rlv-dan··on Ask HN: What site do you use that kept an old design?
Perhaps not "use", but the site where I publish my hobby software, still uses a design made in 1999. Slightly updated (now it uses CSS!) but still the same table based layout :-) Why? Well I guess have better things to do than constantly updating my site with the latest trends. It does its job. It's not mobile friendly, but my audience is mostly using a PC anyway. Somehow I imagine that it portrays an image that a my audience appreciates and matched my software.

Especially Twin Basic looks good IMHO. Looking forward to testing it on my old applications!

rlv-dan··on Lightweight SQLite Editor for Windows
> What arcane library does it rely on

Win32

> can't just cross-compile

Suppose that you only use a specific operating system. Even if you could cross compile, how would you verify that it actually works? How would you know the specifics of each operating system and adapt you application to work well in such situation so that user don't flame you? It's just not that easy. And don't get me started on making GUI applications.

Side note: As a Windows user, In this case I really appreciate the look and feel of the native GUI. It feels like a "real" Windows application. You would not get that if you cross compiled.

rlv-dan··on Whipper: Accurate Audio CD Ripping
Transferring from disc to system via a laser is analogue and error prone. What if there is a scratch? What if the cd wobbles?
rlv-dan··on Why SQLite succeeded as a database (2016)
How does HN feel about "open source but not open contributions"? I have several applications with source on github, but I'm not really interested in contributions. I feel kind of bad about it, but they are "my" applications. The source is not secret and I don't mind people using it. That is why I publish it. Not to get help.
rlv-dan··on Ask HN: Is your memory as bad as mine?
Yes, very bad memory with regards to details. Which makes it frustrating listening to people here rave about command line utilities and vim shortcuts.
rlv-dan··on Show HN: A little side project, a watercolor art generator
This comment make me sad. Replacing human creativity with "ai" is like we've reached the peak so no need to put any effort into life anymore..
rlv-dan··on Elevator Saga: Elevator programming game
The best thing about this is that I no longer feel an urge for another side project to make an elevator programming sim myself :-)
rlv-dan··on Trying new programming languages helped me grow as a software engineer
Not learning new languages and frameworks all the time gave me time to build actual software.
rlv-dan··on Sweden’s incoming cabinet says new nuclear reactors will be built
Hello Miljöpartiet. Still full of bullsh*t and FUD I see.
rlv-dan··on Does Company ‘X’ have an Azure Active Directory Tenant?
Exactly. I know one myself, one of the biggest companies in the world, who's tenant name has no resemblance to their company name. Security by obscurity is not a security feature but it is a barrier...
rlv-dan··on Smooth scrolling 60fps on MSDOS 286
One of the most impressive games I ever saw was Pinball Fantasies for DOS. Running at 60fps on a 286 with real music through the built in PC speaker was unheard of, like a real games console.
rlv-dan··on Winamp 5.9

rlv-dan··on Winamp 5.9
Nostalgia? I still use winamp v2 every day...
rlv-dan··on Microsoft Windows is prohibited at Gitlab
As a long time Windows user, it would take me a considerable amount of time to get used to the operating system and all applications and utilities that I need to be productive. Not saying Windows is great, but it works for me. And I'm pretty sure they don't hire people to learn an operating system.
rlv-dan··on TikTok videos leave teens thinking they have rare mental disorders (2021)
It's taboo to criticise such movements because by extension you criticise those that actually have the illness. And some movements have grown quite powerful politically. If you allude that it's problematic to let children change sex, you are painted as anti lgbtixxxx. Activism has won against science.

rlv-dan··on Japan passes revised penal code with harsher punishment for cyberbullying
Exactly. Now I'm going to write down all the correct options so there is no more arguing on what is right or wrong. Then no one will ever need to feel offended again!
rlv-dan··on Japan passes revised penal code with harsher punishment for cyberbullying
> you have freedom of expression, but it only extends as far as it doesn't infringe on another person's entitlement to a life free from discrimination & harassment

How do you determine this? If I define a common word to be offensive towards me, how would you argue against it if I really feel that way? Where do you draw the line?
