rladd··on Physicist suggests 'quantum foam' may explain away cosmic energy
Most interesting quote:

Carlip suggests instead that in a spacetime foam scenario, energy would exist everywhere in a vacuum—but if you took a much closer look, you would find Planck-sized areas that have an equal likelihood of expanding or contracting. And under such a scenario, the patchwork of tiny areas would appear the same as larger areas in the vacuum—and they would not expand or contract, which means they would have a zero cosmic constant. He notes that under such a scenario, time would have no intrinsic direction.

Google is equally horrible about adwords (and probably most other customer service related issues).

They terminated our adwords account saying that there was something wrong with the site it was advertising and giving a list of 12 extremely general things which might be the problem, none of which seemed to apply.

They also provided no way to respond or get in touch with anyone at all. Their advice was "fix whatever you think may have been the problem and try again".

This wasted a huge amount of time as we tried everything possible to fix the issue to no avail: they never said anything had been fixed and never sent more information.

Finally I got a contact at Google. They looked at our account, said it seemed to be a glitch, and reenabled it.

That's no way to do customer service and is one reason why I think Google should be broken up, if only so that each part is smaller and feels the need to be more accountable.

rladd··on Amazon creating a for-profit national surveilance system
I received a petition to sign protesting this: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/amazon-ring/

On the one hand, I'm all for catching criminals. On the other hand I'm all for limiting Big Brother. It's a paradox to some extent.

But having surveillance pass through Amazon to do with what they will seems like a really bad idea.

rladd··on Most internet service providers are gone – Sonic has survived and thrived
What you're saying is the reverse of the situation I'm complaining about.

I'm not saying that they should specify how soon fiber is coming. Yes, then they'd have a support issue as you describe.

I'm saying that they should admit it when they know that fiber definitely isn't going to come any time soon at all, so that people can make an informed decision not to waste their time waiting for it to come.

rladd··on Most internet service providers are gone – Sonic has survived and thrived
Sure, there are all kinds of problems and all kinds of things that could/should be done to fix them. Micro-trenching would be wonderful.

None of that excuses withholding information from customers to prevent them from being able to make an informed decision.

By the way, the "crowded utility pole" issue was the problem on my block. The way I worked around it was to get PG&E to admit that they were also overloaded even for the wires they were already supporting. Then, when they are replaced the new pole has more capacity for some extra fiber.

rladd··on Most internet service providers are gone – Sonic has survived and thrived
I used to be a big support of Sonic for years, but have changed my mind as of late.

They skipped my block for fiber, and I thought there could be some issue (like the fact that a Muni electric line runs down it) that might make it impossible for them to install it. So I asked their tech support if it was going to someday come, or never come.

Sonic would not give me any information. They wouldn't confirm or deny that they'd ever be able to install fiber. They said it would probably happen eventually, but refused to provide even a ballpark figure like "next month, next year, 2 years, 5 years or 10 years".

I finally got a response saying that there were overloaded utility poles on my block and the next block, and that was what was preventing them from stringing fiber. They even sent a map showing which poles were at fault.

So I went to the PUC and worked with them to get the poles replaced, all while sticking with Sonic's slow and expensive ADSL.

Once the poles were replaced, I went back to Sonic and they still refused to say if or when they'd be able to install fiber. Finally (several years have gone by now) someone from the responsible department said that there would never be fiber on my block because of the Muni electric line. What? That's what I asked in the 1st place!?!

After that someone else replied and said that they could actually do it on Muni electric blocks now, but they again refused to give me any semblance of a timeframe. Finally, someone else at Sonic admitted that it could be a very long time, perhaps more than 7 years, because "it's as time consuming to do permitting for a block as it is for a neighborhood" and my block wasn't a priority.

That's all fine, but if so why didn't they say so in the first place rather than giving me a run-around for 3 or 4 years? Wait, I think I know the answer: if they admit that fiber isn't coming any time soon (if at all) people might go to a competitor for faster service!

Pretty cynical, and not what I'd hope for in an ISP committed to transparency. But there you have it: as far as I'm concerned, Sonic just isn't as cool as they seemed.

TL/DR: If Sonic skips your block, they ain't coming back any time soon, if at all, even if the issue that made them skip is corrected.

rladd··on Shopify and the Power of Platforms
Yes, but Amazon brings traffic and a customer base to the picture. Shopify doesn't.

Shopify is competing with any other shopping cart software, and for companies concerned with performance there may be a case for hosting your own.

rladd··on Shopify and the Power of Platforms
Another point about hosted platforms: if they run slowly, there's not that much you can do to fix it. Here's a GTMetrix report for the aforementioned site: https://gtmetrix.com/reports/sockfancy.com/gSNvns6s

Fully Loaded Time - 7.8s

Not sure anyone would think this is an acceptable amount of time to wait for a page to load.

rladd··on Shopify and the Power of Platforms
Here are some excerpts from my recent conversation with Shopify support:

Q: noticed that sockfancy.com is using shopify? is there a way to set things up like they do: user checks off the options they want and then they go directly to a single-page checkout for their subscription?

A: A subscription is a recurring order. For recurring orders they are using Recurring Orders & Subscription Box App by Bold, and Recurring Orders Enterprise, which is only available to Shopify Plus merchants.

Q: how about the single page checkout?

A: The single page checkout is also a feature of Shopify Plus plan, which starts at $2000 per month. They are also using cashier by Bold.

Q: It looks like those Bold plugins add commission costs of about 3% or more per sale?

A: I don't know the details of that, but again they are available only for Shopify Plus.

Yes it's true that you can set up a generic site cheaply, but for a site that actually works well and has single page checkout, etc. you get into some very big bucks, and also some very large sales commissions.

Fun fact: WordPerfect was written in assembler for (I think) the Data General minicomputer. Every other version was cross-assembled to the given platform.

This was told to me by Alan Ashton, the CEO and founder of WordPerfect, in around 1986. I instantly thought that their days were numbered.

So let's say we did this way back in time, when only 100 humans had been born. They could have been in the 1st half or the 2nd half. In either case, this would seem to predict that no more than 100 more would be born, which is clearly absurd.

Hi Roneil

It looks very cool. Just skimming the documentation, there isn't anything on how to perform actual wallet functions, or whether encrypt/decrypt data using public/private keys is available (which is something I'd find super useful!). Am I missing it, or is it just a matter of looking through the code?

Thanks for making something as cool as this open source!

rladd··on Starlink – SpaceX’s broadband internet system
So wait, we're sending entire server states from one satellite to another every few seconds, rather than routing the data to the satellite when needed? Seems like it would be a trade-off that would be worthwhile only for a small number of edge cases where there's a small server size, a fast start-up time, and a huge amount of very local traffic. In which case, put the server on the ground near the traffic? Or alternatively, move just a bit of the data (caches and some processing) around.

rladd··on One whole-body MRI could replace multiple cancer scans
There are others that are less expensive if you do some searching, like https://radiologyassist.com/ (depending on where you live).

Also, if you call independent MRI centers they will usually give you a much lower cash price (but then insurance won't reimburse).

Another point to consider is that hospital MRIs can cost 10x (ten times) more than independent MRI centers.

And while we're talking about MRIs, it's important to mention that the safer contrast agents are the macrocyclics. Avoid the linear agents if you are concerned about possible gadolinium deposits in your brain and other organs, and potential kidney damage.

What I understood him to mean by that is that, because the software of the vehicle will be updated with more capabilities, the value of the car, perhaps not in monetary terms but in terms of utility, would increase over time.

Of course the use of the term 'asset', since it is typically used for financial value, is confusing if that was his intended meaning.
