rkwasny··on 1.1B Taxi Rides Using Hydrolix on AWS
We live in a post big data world, few companies maintain datasets 10b rows+ for anything else a decent MPP database like Clickhouse.

Also beware - investing in technology that does not support standard SQL will create problems in the future, like MAPD - amazing database just there is no way to connect it to enterprise analytics software like Tableau.

rkwasny··on You don't need reinforcement learning when you have basic physics
I guess the whole idea of reinforcement learning is to "learn" how basic physics works from the observations

We can hardcode a solution in a simple example but how do you write a rule to drive a car from pure physics equations?

rkwasny··on 'I'll sleep when I'm dead': The sleep-deprived masculinity stereotype
The question is, how does sleeping less than 7 hours a day impact you health/cognitive abilities?

Also does catching up on sleep from time-to-time help?

rkwasny··on SSE code 6 times slower without VZEROUPPER on Skylake (2016)
For the enterprise software you need to support old hardware simply because clients (especially Swiss ones) often have a very old VMware environment running on Xeons without AVX. This is either because CPUs do not support AVX or there is a compatibility layer enabled for live migration that disables it.

rkwasny··on Ask HN: How do you find the energy for a side project after a 9-5 job?
I am by no means an expert in self-help, just one advice - invest in things that save time: streamlined morning routine, quick commute or no commute, outsourcing non-essential tasks like cleaning, cooking (however cooking is great to bond with family and relax if not done in a rush).

Don't worry to much about the world, just keep moving forward :)

rkwasny··on Lawsuit over online book lending could bankrupt Internet Archive
We need to put Internet Archive on IPFS or something similar, finding a single location for 50PB+ archive is going to be difficult but one can easily find 50000 people with 1TB of free space and a stable server+internet connection.
rkwasny··on Apple’s T2 Security Chip Has Created a Nightmare for MacBook Refurbishers
This is a feature not a bug, no one will want to steal a mac if it's not worth anything.

However there should a way (possibly in iCloud) to remove protection from old laptop that you gave to someone.

rkwasny··on Amazon Elastic Container Service now supports Amazon EFS file systems
EFS performance is just horrible. Running containers on it is asking for problems.

My advice, stick to EC2 + EBS, it works.
