rkwasny··on Ask HN: Which feature would make you switch away from Google search?
I switched to brave search, it just works like google, no problems
rkwasny··on Bolt founder on Stripe/YC
"A number 1 ranking on Hacker News gets millions of views"

Yeah, anyone who got to #1 knows this is not true.

rkwasny··on I got pwned by my cloud costs
I guess all Microsoft PR and Marketing departments are now on the phone trying to get this guy a refund and take down this post :)
rkwasny··on Free Postgres databases for small projects
On thing I'm missing, is there an object store that works well with fly.io?

Where do you store user uploaded content?

rkwasny··on How IPFS is broken
The main problem with IPFS is chunking, if file is uploaded 2 times into IPFS it can result in two different hashes.

It would be really great if we could just access ipfs://[sha256_of_file]

rkwasny··on UK’s largest flow battery energised
5 MWh = 370 tesla powerwalls - for a grid energy storage this is a small POC
rkwasny··on The Navy's $9B Stealthy Super Destroyer Is Covered in Rust
Even US Navy is migrating to Rust? ;-)
rkwasny··on Debunking Cloudflare’s recent performance tests
Popcorn time ;) Let's wait for @jgrahamc to wake up

Simple solution is for Cloudflare to change TOS to allow benchmarking and for 3rd party to publish a reproducible benchmark suite.

However TBH benchmarking a distributed system like Cloudflare/Fastly is going to be REALLY HARD. There are 1000s of servers involved and reproducing the results might be impossible.

rkwasny··on AWS Fargate for Amazon ECS Powered by AWS Graviton2 Processors
"AWS Announcing AWS Fargate for Amazon AWS ECS Powered by AWS Graviton2 AWS Processors"

Fixed, not enough AWS in the title :)

rkwasny··on An “incident” with the James Webb Space Telescope has occurred
They dropped it?
rkwasny··on ClickHouse vs TimescaleDB
It's really quite easy, if you don't need DELETE ClickHouse wins every benchmark.
rkwasny··on Comparing ClickHouse to PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB for time-series data
Ah so the tests you have used are not the ones in https://github.com/timescale/tsbs ?
rkwasny··on Comparing ClickHouse to PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB for time-series data
Also this queries are different? order by "time" vs order by "created_at"

There is some creative engineering going here :) have a look:

rkwasny··on Is the world economy entering a wage-price spiral?
Well, obviously no, unless you work in a coal mine you are not getting a bonus.

This inflation is the worst kind, energy prices go up = no one wins.

rkwasny··on Solar Panels on Half the World’s Roofs Would Power the Planet
Yeah, just not in Europe, clouds are a serious problem.
rkwasny··on UK National Space Strategy
I wonder how they plan to launch from Europe.

It's not that French guys wanted to build a spaceport in the middle of nowhere in Guiana, just it's easier to reach geostationary orbit from the equator. Also if things go wrong you really need a large uninhabited place to the east.

rkwasny··on iOS 15 iCloud Private Relay Vulnerability Identified
Honestly, I have no clue how this was not identified in testing
rkwasny··on The Tesla Semi Is an Engineering Failure
It all depends if a fully loaded truck is going up or down the hill, regen of electric semi will be crazy good
rkwasny··on http://ai/
.ai registration is managed by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vince_Cate very interesting story there
rkwasny··on End of the line for Uber?
Well, Uber created a lot of value for initial shareholders and riders, now even if it dies mutual funds and ETFs will foot the bill.
rkwasny··on New Laptop: Thinkpad P14s
TBH my Macbook Pro does the same, really annoying when going on holidays and not using a laptop for few days.
rkwasny··on I built a business that lets me live on the beach full time
Still looking for laptops with better screen brightness so I can actually work from the beach :)
rkwasny··on Generating JSON Directly from Postgres
Don't do this.

It will create various problems when next engineer adds some business logic, another one adds some stored procedures....

rkwasny··on OpenFlights – airport and airline data
In the past I wanted to build a system that checks flight paths and will tell you what kind of plane noise you can expect in the area where you want to buy a house.

Anyone build it yet/ needs something like this?

rkwasny··on $ ssh sshchat.hackclub.com
If you ssh into a host and use ssh-agent + `ForwardAgent Yes` - host can get your PRIVATE key.
rkwasny··on $ ssh sshchat.hackclub.com
Do not run it if you use ssh-agent!

Remember agent will forward all of your ssh keys to the untrusted server.

rkwasny··on Dropbox's San Francisco HQ is selling for a record-breaking $1.08B
I wonder how this will impact startup scene, most projects start with few people having a discussion over a beer about an interesting topic.
rkwasny··on Map of my personal data infrastructure
This is an awesome idea for a startup!

Camera integrated with glasses that you can wear for 8 hours without charging + home box that post-processes this into useful archive. I have a Vuzix Blade (https://www.vuzix.com/products/blade-smart-glasses-upgraded) that could work for MVP.

rkwasny··on Wait, WTF?: I saw that you spun up and Ubuntu image in Azure
How would they know the contact details?
