rkuykendall-com··on When did Google get so weird?
I typed this into Google because I expected you would be correct, and the LLM would return examples of the meme, and I wanted to see it.

Instead, the AI answered that it is "actually a famous example from internet culture used to describe how people use search engines. The phrase stems from discussions on tech forums like Hacker News regarding the differences between "keyword searching" and "natural language searching"".

rkuykendall-com··on Coyote v. Acme (1990)
You missed some really good jokes.
rkuykendall-com··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Self driving is coming to Teslas next year! [0]

rkuykendall-com··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
In Texas, you get alerts for anything the government wants to virtue-signal about. Silver for elderly, Blue for police, Amber for children, Clear for adults, and of course Camo for veterans. If a cop is shot anywhere in the 250,000+ square miles of the state, the entire population gets woken up by the same blaring noise they use for tornados.
rkuykendall-com··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or is software buggier across the board?
This was a theme in early Futurama (before it just became another Simpsons). A great example from the pilot is the Star Trek doors that keep closing on Fry.
rkuykendall-com··on Factorio 2.1 Experimental Release
It's the opposite really! On Gleba, you are subsisting on an infinitely fertile river. On one end, the resources flow for ever and ever. On the other end, the resources burn for ever and ever. In the middle, you create whatever you want, for free, for ever and ever. Do not disturb the flow, but draw from it and feed into it. This is a zen of Gleba.
rkuykendall-com··on Factorio 2.1 Experimental Release
> the best solution is just massively overbuilding all products and burning huge waste piles

Yes, you have figured out Gleba! Once you build with this mindset, you will achieve enlightenment.

rkuykendall-com··on Factorio 2.1 Experimental Release
Trains don't need to be optimal, they just need to be viable. The fun makes them optimal. I think the quality, speed, and belt improvements did enough to return them to this balance (but I have not played, so I can't say myself).
rkuykendall-com··on Waymo pauses Atlanta service as its robotaxis keep driving into floods
Take a look at `2313 NW Military Hwy # 100, San Antonio, TX 78231`

This is an intersection I myself felt daunting my first few years driving. It is within Waymo's San Antonio coverage, and they seem to be handling that just fine.

However, they had to pause them recently related to a lost car, due to, drum roll please... flooding.

rkuykendall-com··on WiiFin – Jellyfin Client for Nintendo Wii
I was going to comment "audio track names" but it appears that has finally been added, at least on web UI.
rkuykendall-com··on YouTube now world's largest media company, topping Disney
This was true of Cable as well.
rkuykendall-com··on Battle for Wesnoth: open-source, turn-based strategy game
The entire Marathon trilogy, a 2.5D Bungie FPS with a rich story, is open-source and well maintained for all platforms.

rkuykendall-com··on Coding agents could make free software matter again
I have a Synology NAS I can push docker images to. The key is to set up the docker image so it does a git pull on start, that way I just push to Github and restart it.

This was _incredibly_ hard to set up, in a way I did not expect, even with frontier models. It took me 3-4 evenings.

If someone can solve "Heroku for home server" it would open up a world of what HackerNews calls "home cooked" software.

rkuykendall-com··on What happens when US economic data becomes unreliable
CNN and MSNBC are not propaganda networks in the way that Fox is.
rkuykendall-com··on ATMs didn't kill bank Teller jobs, but the iPhone did
I am going to guess you are 30 or older. Google image search "laptop tasks millennial" to see that this is a feeling shared among our cohort but not the younger cohort.
rkuykendall-com··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
"blue bubble" here is undersold. It means Apple has anti-competitively broken the experience of speaking with loved ones on purpose if you leave their ecosystem.
rkuykendall-com··on Covering electricity price increases from our data centers
Well yeah, I agree, collective action would be actually collective. I'm not gonna try to prescribe something like taxes or infrastructure changes, but stuff like that.

You're just describing individual action, which like you said, isn't gonna do anything.

rkuykendall-com··on Covering electricity price increases from our data centers
There are people who recognize there is a problem and would support collective action to fix it, and there are those that don't. As long as you are in the first group, there's nothing else you can individually do to make a difference.
rkuykendall-com··on 2 in 5 Americans did not read a single book in 2025
I think you are fairly unique in your inability to listen to audiobooks. I talk with a lot of friends about books and have been in very long-running book clubs. Almost nothing differentiates book readers and book listeners. Mostly book readers don't know how to pronounce some character names.
rkuykendall-com··on Show HN: NukeCast – If it happened today, where would the fallout go
I appreciate San Antonio being included, but you may want to shift your exact target a bit to be more accurate. Probably over to Fort Sam Houston, but I'm no expert. Right now it looks like they just really hate the Deco District.

rkuykendall-com··on Tell HN: Bending Spoons laid off almost everybody at Vimeo yesterday
Dropout originally only used Vimeo for video distribution. They switched to Vimeo for OTT only after running their own with a team of developers and finding it to be an unexpectedly hard task. I think I learned that in the Sam Reich Hank Green Decoder interview.
rkuykendall-com··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
The Zohran model is to not pretend to be someone different, and exclusively focus on what you believe the core problem to be with a few clearly definable solutions (and no slogans).
rkuykendall-com··on Gaussian Splatting – A$AP Rocky "Helicopter" music video
I found this VFX breakdown of the recent Superman movie to have a great explanation of what it is and what it makes possible: https://youtu.be/eyAVWH61R8E?t=232

tl;dr eli5: Instead of capturing spots of color as they would appear to a camera, they capture spots of color and where they exist in the world. By combining multiple cameras doing this, you can make a 3D works from footage that you can then zoom a virtual camera round.

rkuykendall-com··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
I don't think people didn't "pick up" on it, I just don't think anyone thinks it matters. There is no smoke-and-mirrors back-room strategizing here. It looked cool on Fox News. Then the president went onto Fox News and talked about how cool it looked on Fox News. The text is text. The subtext is nonexistent.
rkuykendall-com··on 50% of U.S. vinyl buyers don't own a record player
I bought my kids all the songs on Tonie. Now I am buying them all the same songs on Yoto. I can't wait to just start burning CDs again.
rkuykendall-com··on Auto-grading decade-old Hacker News discussions with hindsight
Assuming this keeps running, I suppose we just have to wait about a year.
rkuykendall-com··on Django 6
Even before you get to the lacking Admin UI, the first thing Rails asks me to do is implement authentication. Coming from a true batteries-included framework like Django that feels like a complete non-starter.
rkuykendall-com··on Zohran Mamdani wins the New York mayoral race
Isn't it proposing running like five grocery stores to test? That's not bonkers or radical. Or even expensive. It seems like the type of experiment HN would love.
rkuykendall-com··on The hand-drawn hits that Hollywood isn't making
Not a great example. The 5th (and most recent) Shrek movie has the highest RT of the franchise and is largely considered a masterpiece.
rkuykendall-com··on Temporary suspension of acceptance of mail to the United States
> Hopefully actions like this will change voter behavior
