rkuska··on Apple's M4 has reportedly adopted the ARMv9 architecture
That’s actually a nice side effect of all the *rumors pages. The rumors of future products keep me of buying the current products. I keep on using my previous products while saving money and planet and being excited about what future holds.
rkuska··on Is my toddler a stochastic parrot?
We learned ours following: * more * all done * milk (as in breast feeding) * drink

I think it makes a big difference, both for us (parents, to have a clue what they want) and the kid (being understood, when they can’t speak).

rkuska··on Texas man sent to death row over junk science denied US Supreme Court appeal
Basically a summary of 12 angry men.
rkuska··on Diamond prices are in free fall in one key corner of the market
When I proposed I got a ring with natural diamond. But being aware of all the shenanigans around diamonds I decided to get imperfect diamond. Especially because of the artificial diamonds - I assumed they would strive for perfect diamonds and therefore would make my imperfect one more unique later. Salt & pepper one. It looks like somebody has trapped a galaxy inside it. It's beautiful and it didn't cost much (compared to pure diamonds).
rkuska··on A single line of code made a 24-core server slower than a laptop (2021)
This is exactly a reason why I like Scylla as a database. One shard per CPU. Each shard owning different partition of data. Great performance.
rkuska··on American travelers are being charged up to 3 times more for vacations
It's just a lazy price check, nothing to do with US credit card. (I worked at such 3rd party site).
rkuska··on Every web search result in Brave Search is now served by our own index
Booking.com allowed me book a room in a hotel that was closed due to renovation - which I didn't know. I learned that a week prior my trip because I messaged the property (as I had a special request) and received automatically generated reply.

Since then I book directly. Most recently I booked a hotel which had 2+1 night free. Booking.com was offering full price for 3 nights stay.

rkuska··on The Old (2018)
I would recommend you to go and watch What Owning a Japanese Public Bath is Like[0]. While the video is supposed to be about running an onsen I think it is more about love, aging, family and importance of not being idle. It is very touching.

(fyi Life Where I'm From is one of the best channels on youtube with high quality content) [0] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcPGdM76O2U

rkuska··on Dishwasher Salmon
I think at that stage the fish cared about cancer no more.
rkuska··on Dutch journalist who writes critically on China targeted in intimidation scheme
There were 2 in Czech republic, Prague. https://www.irozhlas.cz/zpravy-domov/cinske-policejni-stanic...
rkuska··on Overhead of Returning Optional Values in Java and Rust (2021)
Maybe the person missed the difference because how your numbers are formatted:

- OptionBenchmark.sumOptional avgt 5 2223,887 us/op

vs

- OptionBenchmark.sumOptionalValhalla avgt 5 572,833 us/op

At least to me after the first read it seemed like comparison of two similair 5kish values.

rkuska··on “Clean” code, horrible performance
And let's not forget that majority of CPU cycles is spent on encoding/decoding json requests.
rkuska··on Classic 50mm “Normal” Lens
My favourite portable cheap full frame lense is 40mm summicron (yeah cheap and summicron, weird right?) https://www.35mmc.com/02/04/2016/leica-40mm-summicron-review...
rkuska··on A method to promote sleep in crying infants using the transport response [pdf]
I believe the kid is unable to manipulate until they are at least year old and the crying usually means something.
rkuska··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
My favourite one is John Berger / Ways of Seeing. It's available on youtube [0]. If you enjoy photography you might enjoying this documentary as well. I think it's very much related to the recent topic https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32794757

rkuska··on Mikhail Gorbachev has died
This is how every conspiracy starts I think. Others believing that people in power have these plans laid out several decades in advance. Where in reality their plans (in democratic world) only spans several years (their active mandate).

Nobody can foresee the future. US supported Yeltsin because that was something that made sense in a given time for them. They didn't do this because they expected to make ton of money in 2022 of LNG and arms sales.

Now they were given opportunity to make some $ which also coincidence with their own interests.

But they are not able to tell what impact will this have in another 20-30 years. They do it because it makes the most sense now. Not because they have this super masterful long term play.

rkuska··on Walking Venice
If you are withdrawing the same currency that your bank account is then yes I believe euronet is ok. But try to use them with bank account in foreign currency - it´s not really clear to the user that they are accepting such a terrible exchange rate. At least that´s my experience.
rkuska··on Walking Venice
A little advice about ATMs (I think it should be applicable within any country in Europe) - Try to always look out for an ATMs that belong to banks, they are usually “nice” in terms of being easy to choose not to impose their own currency rate.

The predatory ones are usually operated by some private nonbank subject most common being Euronet - don’t even touch these.

rkuska··on The overengineered solution to my pigeon problem
I once found pigeon nest behind my window with 3 eggs in it. I didn't have the heart to destroy the nest. Little did I know about what filth I will have to clean up once they take off. Also, they left behind some very tiny beetles that I battled with for few weeks to come. They were so tiny they managed to squeeze in through the window's sealing.

This year I found an egg again. I threw it away.

rkuska··on Ask HN: People who use different emails everywhere, who sold you to spammers?
Funny how it's always the republicans who can't get their email address right.

I have similar problem, from trump watch newsletters to random local republican party emails, also received few invitations to parties, medical results, private photos from trips and the list continues. Also when the covid started I was cced on some action group that was solving the covid problem in their area. The worst thing is the spam from dating sites that I get.

I think the problem in my case is that the person uses exactly the same handler but at yahoo instead of gmail.

rkuska··on Connecting a gaming PC to Apple Studio Display
> Unfortunately, vanishingly few desktop gaming PCs have any Thunderbolt support. And even if your machine happens to include a Thunderbolt port, it’s unlikely to be able to route frames from your discrete graphics card, which would defeat the purpose of connecting it to your Studio Display to play games.

I solved this problem with https://www.delock.com/produkt/89582/merkmale.html?g=1112 . By a problem I mean connecting my monitor (DELL) via "thunderbolt" (it's actually usb-c dp alt) to desktop. I use my monitor as USB hub and I wanted to connect it with just a single cable (usb-c dp alt transfers both video and usb utils).

rkuska··on Why dark and light is complicated in photographs
Roy DeCarava has one of the most beautifully developed prints of black people. Here is an interesting article on that subject https://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/22/magazine/a-true-picture-o...
rkuska··on Everything I googled in a week as a professional software engineer (2019)
My hometown is a small one, so I have to remember which (bigger) cities are prior to mine. Also it's not just going on a single highway to reach my destination it's a combination of 2 different highways and several motorways and even roads that lead through villages. There are also often detours because of construction and whatnot.

Maybe important to note, this is Europe. Going from one's country big city to other's country small city. It's not just straight single highway.

rkuska··on Everything I googled in a week as a professional software engineer (2019)
I think we don’t remember the things because we know they are at the reach of our fingers.

This is based on my experience with driving. I used to drive car every other week from the city where I live to my hometown (230km give or take). I did the route several times for few years - and still I never could remember which exit to take on specific places. Then I decided to drive without navigation. It took few wrong turns and one try and now I remember my route without any problems.

rkuska··on Show HN: I made a no-code tool to create animated technical papers
This is actually a really nice idea. In my current gig we write technical documentation (before implementing) that has both words/sentences and visuals in it. My co-workers have to approve the document before I (or somebody else) implements it. This would be a really great way to read such documents.
rkuska··on Why did Dostoyevsky write Crime and Punishment?
The Brothers Karamazov is probably the only book I never finished reading. I since have never tried to read anything from Dostoyevsky and was wondering whether reading his book in Slovak language (my native language which is relatively close to Russian and as such should provide a better translation) would help me (I bought english print at airport). It eases my mind a bit knowing it is difficult also in the language the book was written in.
rkuska··on Dislike button would improve Spotify's recommendations
I always understood that when you skip a song the spotify counts that as a dislike.
rkuska··on Ireland joins OECD International Tax agreement
I was born in the former Czechoslovakia, both countries (now) are small and the quality of dubbing is pretty high (just fyi).
rkuska··on Ireland joins OECD International Tax agreement
Paris is not really much of English speaking city. (I travel to Paris often)
rkuska··on Partitioning GitHub’s relational databases to handle scale
I believe they don't need 2P commits when transactions don't span multiple partitions. It's explained here https://github.blog/2021-09-27-partitioning-githubs-relation...
