rkrzr··on PRQL – A proposal for a better SQL
I think supporting variables and functions already solves most of my composability gripes with SQL.

Another problem that I have with composing SQL is that large queries quickly become unreadable, and error messages are also often not terribly helpful. I think having a more expressive type system would help with the error messages. Do you have any plans on adding a type system to PRQL?

rkrzr··on Pgagroal: High-performance connection pool for PostgreSQL
As a long-time happy user of Postgres, I am happy to answer your questions:

> The popularity and mindshare of Postgres really puzzles me.

Why? Postgres really is "The World's Most Advanced Open Source Relational Database", just like it says on the tin.

> It’s so arcane and full of weird failure modes and gotchas.

Not really. It actually is the best-documented open source database that behaves just like they say in the manual. The Postgres manual is really quite wonderful, can be read back-to-back, like a good book.

> Why can’t we have SQL like this?

This has more to do with SQL itself than with Postgres. SQL as a standard has evolved over so many decades that the latest version of the spec has literally thousands of pages [citation needed, couldn't quickly find a link]. Implementing all of this, is an enormous task, and no relational DB implements all of it.

> I guess we do in the form of CockroachDB or Yugabyte, but Postgres has been so aggressively evangelized try selling someone on those. I know of one or two companies that use them but it’s a tough sell.

Postgres covers ~95% of all use cases of your average software company. Specialized DBs are really only useful in that last ~5% of cases.

> There are tons of overpriced Postgres managed cloud offerings and consultancies, so my guess is that there is a heavy financially motivated astroturf campaign.

Postgres is quite easy to run yourself, completely free of charge. There really isn't any "financially motivated astroturf campaign" that I can discern.

rkrzr··on Upcoming/proposed breaking changes to Haskell
Having written both Haskell and Scala professionally, I actually see Scala's dependence on the JVM as its biggest flaw.

If it weren't for the JVM Scala could make do without an Any type and without having to deal with null values. I hope that alternative runtimes like Scala Native will become more popular, since Scala could evolve away from its JVM roots then.

I'm also not a fan of JVM performance optimization, since there are too many knobs to turn, and the knobs often have (undocumented) side-effects on other knobs. This is a lot simpler with the Haskell runtime (in my experience) since you mainly need to tweak the GC settings there.

rkrzr··on It's tough being an Azure fan
> Egress feels abusive pretty much across the board. Without really a good reason. Feels like they all sat at a table and decided to fix the price there

Indeed. You can significantly lower your price for hosting static files by using an external CDN in front of S3 or GCS.

Little known fact: egress from GCS to Cloudflare is half the price than their usual egress fees. So combining the Cloudflare CDN for caching static files with this egress discount can lead to a 3-4x saving over just serving files out of GCS directly.

rkrzr··on Moving SciPy to the Meson Build System
> Really there were only two viable candidates: CMake and Meson.

Would be great to hear why those were the only two candidates that they considered (and not e.g. Bazel or Nix).

rkrzr··on Nix is the ultimate DevOps toolkit
(author here) I agree that Nix not being statically typed is one of the biggest drawbacks of the language. Having it statically typed with a strong type system like Haskell's would help solve some of the readability issues that you mention. Types of course also serve as documentation, which is another often-mentioned weak point of the language. Finally, with static types we could also have much better editor support with nice things like auto-completion.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any efforts to add (optional) typing to the Nix language.

rkrzr··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
Does Backblaze offer strong consistency for files?

The killer feature of Google Cloud Storage in my eyes is its ability to be strongly consistent, if you set the right HTTP headers. This is not possible for Amazon S3, which is always eventually consistent and makes it unusable for many use cases where you need to be able to guarantee that customers will always see the newest version of a file.

rkrzr··on SapphireDb – Open-Source Alternative to Firebase
If you are looking for an open-source replacement of the Firebase Realtime Database, you might also be interested in Icepeak (https://github.com/channable/icepeak) (full disclosure, I'm one of the authors).

Icepeak was written because we were unsatisfied with the reliability and with the (occasionally) high latency of Firebase, both for pushing updates via HTTP (>1s for some requests) and for receiving updates over websockets.

This was about 3 years ago though, so I hope that Google improved the quality of the service in the mean time.

rkrzr··on Quantum Supremacy Using a Programmable Superconducting Processor
> This result is the first experimental challenge against the extended Church-Turing thesis, which states that classical computers can efficiently implement any “reasonable” model of computation. With the first quantum computation that cannot reasonably be emulated on a classical computer, we have opened up a new realm of computing to be explored.

Note, that the "extended Church-Turing thesis"[1] says something very different than the actual "Church-Turing thesis" (and is also not due to either Church or Turing).

The original Church-Turing thesis is not challenged at all by these experiments. Indeed, it has been shown that quantum Turing machines are not computationally more powerful than deterministic Turing machines - as in: any program that can be computed by a quantum Turing machine can in principle also be computed by a deterministic Turing machine (it just might take a little/a lot longer).

The extended Church-Turing thesis is concerned with the performance of a computation and says something about the "efficiency" of the computation.

The original thesis is concerned with what's possible, while the extended thesis is concerned with what's feasible.
