rkomorn··on YouTube Premium price is going up $2 to $15.99/mo
Well, I didn't notice I was replying to the same person twice and I'm wearing my glasses, so... :)
rkomorn··on YouTube Premium price is going up $2 to $15.99/mo
"8 times more" ?

The price is going from $13.99 to $15.99 , that's "up $2" .

It's not going up from $2 to $15.99 .

I don't get what you mean by 800%.

It's going up $2, from $13.99 to $15.99 .

It is the more suitable replacement for bread, after all.

Too bad she never said it, though.

rkomorn··on Combining spicy foods with mint boosts anti-inflammatory effects 100x or more
Wonder if that might be related to why I wrote "but its popularity isn't due to doctors recommending it (because they don't, by and large)."
rkomorn··on Combining spicy foods with mint boosts anti-inflammatory effects 100x or more
I think the closest one ("but no cigar") might be oscillococcinum, but its popularity isn't due to doctors recommending it (because they don't, by and large).
rkomorn··on Are We Idiocracy Yet?
Why would he water plants with Coke? Coke doesn't have electrolytes, and that's what plants crave.
rkomorn··on I won't download your app. The web version is a-ok
Are you implying with your last sentence that websites are less culpable of enshittification, dark patterns, and dopamine hacking?

Or are you including the web-based properties of "modern apps" in said apps?

As someone who can vote in both "first past the post" and "50%+1" elections, I have to say the latter still has me choosing the lesser evil most of the time (edit: in the second round, usually).

Turns out when you have pluralities of garbage parties, the results are still pretty garbage.

This is spot on. He's doing what he's doing because of the support he has in the other branches.

Better than keeping gold in the tiroir.
rkomorn··on Ask HN: How do you escape golden handcuffs at FAANG?
> The big thing is learning to live within your means

I'd say it's more "learning to live within the means of a non-FAANG person."

My FAANG colleagues spending 4x what I was on their mortgages in the Bay Area were also technically living within their means, but it also meant they had no choice but to stay handcuffed.

A slither of reality sounds snaky... and I ended up googling it and Google AI convincingly says both that it exists and also that it is confused with "sliver of reality", and its examples of "slither of reality" point to pages that use "sliver" instead.

What a time to be alive.

rkomorn··on France pulls last gold held in US for $15B gain
The French part in that sentence should be the name of the region (eg Doré(e) ), not "région", and if you wanted to use the French spelling of "région", you'd have to say "région Dore".

Using the French spelling of région but the wrong word order doesn't make sense.

I'd agree with you if there wasn't a significant power imbalance that virtually always skews way more in favor of the corporation.

It is far more likely that an individual would do best to agree to a corporation's terms even if they favor the corporation than the other way around.

rkomorn··on German men 18-45 need military permit for extended stays abroad
Political representation in just about every country (including Germany) already skews pretty heavily towards men.

It also turns out that men tend to be more in favor of war than women.

So whether codified in law or not, the power structure is already how you want it to be, and it's more likely to send men to their deaths.

rkomorn··on Improving my focus by giving up my big monitor
I used to use the laptop screen as slack/mail/calendar, and really, rather than helping in any way, it was probably more of a productivity sink: all the interrupts were conveniently more visible.

rkomorn··on Improving my focus by giving up my big monitor
> There is a minor cognitive hit from switching focus between monitors for things like reading documentation, so I don't like doing that.

Do you not feel like there's a similar hit from switching full screen windows? Or is your documentation within your full screen IDE?

I gotta admit I used to think I just had a great sense of direction.

Then I moved back to Europe and realized it was a lie. It was just that the grid systems of the places I lived in the US were much easier to navigate.

Reminds me of a demo my college physics professor did in our first class (presumably to get our attention).

He had two floating balloons, one about twice as big as the other. Pointed a blowtorch at the smaller one and it (of course) popped.

"That one was filled with helium. Now, there's only one gas less dense than helium..." and right as I thought to myself "he's not gonna do what I think he's gonna do", he pointed the blowtorch at the other balloon which exploded into a much larger (and much louder) fireball.

Attention captured, for sure.

I don't think they're talking about merging on a highway?

Sounds like they're talking about the fact that at an intersection, unless signaled otherwise, the people coming from the right have right of way.
