rkk3··on Tell HN: I was permanently banned from eBay in one hour
>> They collected a ton of my sensitive information (address, phone, bank account, etc)

> Yep. OP's only real recourse is to just try again in 6 months or a year or whatever and hope that their ML algorithm evaluates their data differently.

And what change their identity? They already have their PII and banned them for life.

rkk3··on After the first tech job
> but I don’t imagine a barber needing to study haircuts on his off hours to stay relevant. Coding isn’t like that

Because the fashion industry never changes ???

rkk3··on Why is every consumer startup selling me what I already own for 10x the price?
> if it were real, the company would be getting signed off by the EPA

Lots of things aren't regulated by the EPA, the FDA etc. Major cosmetic companies used lead in lipstick until fairly recently...

And ironically enough, a lot of the toxicity from Mattresses and furniture etc is caused by the government regulation because it's from requiring them to be treated in Fire Retardants

rkk3··on Ask HN: How does one make an effective pitch without 'giving away' the proposal?
So you have an idea for a system/process for how some large business could operate better and you wan't to pitch them to buy it and execute it?

Companies don't buy ideas... they buy; teams, products or businesses. Fit into one of those buckets.

rkk3··on US man wins $450k lawsuit after unwanted office birthday party
He won $450k after being fired by his employer... because of an anxiety attack from an unwanted office birthday party
rkk3··on Managing mental health while running a startup
These things sound like quirks (door desks) or early stage un-funded/little funding company issues. There are lots of people playing "entrepreneur" and there are businesses that puffer-fish to pretend they are bigger than they are.

If you actually raise VC you receive millions of dollars. What do you think happens to all that money? It gets spent on salaries.

rkk3··on Managing mental health while running a startup
Ramen profitability is a stage in the startup lifecycle, but it's associated with very early stage (tens or hundreds of thousands in investment) & specifically with the accelerator that runs this website... it is not associated venture capital funded businesses, they have different problems
rkk3··on Managing mental health while running a startup
> VCs are a substantial part of the problem here with their decisions to use a power imbalance to get founders to take little to no salary for as long as possible to extend the runway of the company.

This might be true with some Accelerators or Angel Investors not VCs. When A16z or other VC's write a 10mm dollar check they don't pressure their founders to have poverty line wages... if anything they try to get the founders to go buy a Ferrari they can't afford.

rkk3··on Single mom sues coding boot camp over job placement rates
IME best predictor of "success" is the prestige/brand of the candidates have before they entered the program. It's based on candidate selection, not ability. But with the VC model there is pressure to grow, so they lower the bar and accept people who aren't transitioning from prestige background; PHD's/name brand schools or companies... and shocker they struggle to find a job.

They are scams because they juke the stats. They hire their own graduates to up placement rates & deceptively determine there own exclusion criteria to remove data of people who didn't get placed.

rkk3··on Microplastics found in live human lung tissue
rude... Lyme disease is actually part of my life, unlike the black death.
rkk3··on Ask HN: Any Parents to “Average” Children?
Pre-school? Seems a bit early to be worried about their standardized test performance. It's a lot of theater to justify your tuition fee.

But even if they have a lower test score (than you wanted)when they are 3/4/5 years old, so what? Don't be fatalistic, they have a lot of growing to do & need your support.

rkk3··on Stanford prof calls cops on Berkeley prof who exposed her $5K/hr consulting fee
Businesses charge crazy amounts for running training. I've known significantly less credentialed people who in their 20's were being billed out at comparable rates, admittedly to the largest corps in the world - not a public school district. Also remember its $5000/hr for running a session, not for the development of it. It does seem high though.
rkk3··on Microplastics found in live human lung tissue
> Lyme disease, which is now suspected to be transmitted sexually and maybe across the placenta (speculative though that is).

Source? Lyme disease is from ticks.

rkk3··on The computers used to do 3D animation for Final Fantasy VII in 1996
Chrono Trigger!
rkk3··on Ask HN: What (almost) company sinking engineering mistakes have you witnessed?
Unintentionally making sensitive enterprise information publicly accessible & indexable/searchable thru a cloud service
rkk3··on Trying to Solve a Covid Mystery: Africa’s Low Death Rates
Even if you are morbidly obese from muscle (who are we kidding) that excess weight is still putting unhealthy additional stress on all of your organs
rkk3··on Spotify and Google Announce User Choice Billing

Long hours is just 'the old lie' in a business context... Dulce et Decorum Est
rkk3··on Covid and the Heart: It Spares No One – Johns Hopkins
What was the methodology around asymptomatic covid cases and cardiac outcomes?

This seems like a sensationalist claim.

rkk3··on The conspiracy to kill Julius Caesar
Too much modern romanticization. Cassius and Brutus chose to assassinate Caesar because his consolidation of power meant they couldn't have grand political careers, it was a fundamentally selfish-act & power grab that we've projected enlightenment reasoning on.

Strongly recommend. 'Caesar, Life of a Colossus' by Adrian Goldsworthy

rkk3··on Silicon Valley's sex censorship harms everyone
> Pornhub's problem wasn't sex. It was revenge porn, authentic rape videos, and all the other content you will host if you allow anonymous uploads.

Meta/FB/Insta/Whatsapp/Messenger were & are responsible for facilitating significantly more of all of the above terrible things. Of course the problem was sex and that they are a vice company, it made them an easy moral outrage target.

rkk3··on Silicon Valley's sex censorship harms everyone
It wasn't hard to de-platform them because they are a vice company, not because of what was on there servers unintentionally. By your standard Meta/FB/Insta are much worse perpetrators of hosting child pornography
rkk3··on Silicon Valley's sex censorship harms everyone
> Which is mostly coming from the religious right who are big funders/power-holders and dislike sexual imagery and non-fundamental norms in the public eye.

The Religious Right? Nicholas Kristof of the NYT, is probably the most powerful individual sex censor - the guy singlehandedly got Pornhub financially de-platformed!

rkk3··on A better way to divide the pie
> The less discussed scenario is when a candidate aggressively negotiates a very above-average compensation but subsequently performs in a below-average manner. This is one of the most common complaint scenarios in a private manager forum that I'm part of: Managers who get wowed by people with excellent interviewing and self-selling skills who end up underperforming their lesser-paid peers later. It generates a lot of guilt and anxiety for managers when they realize they've been duped into inverting the contribution:reward relationship in their compensation structure.

Isn't this more a failure of the management? What can justify having wide disparities in starting comp for the same role? Seems like the striving candidate should be bumped up a level & you just hold them accountable to the higher bar, rather than evaluating their performance based on comp.

rkk3··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
Not the OP but presumably the 'Emotional Intelligence' book by Daniel Goleman
rkk3··on Amazon intentionally made it hard to cancel Prime subscription in secret project
I cancelled the other month on impulse, to see if I'd miss it.

The initial wording implied that by cancelling I'd be giving up the remaining duration I had already paid for. After closing that window and starting the process again, I got different wording that made it clear I would keep access until the renewal date. Scumbags.

rkk3··on P&O Ferries sparks outrage by sacking 800 workers
Had an expat US friend who was working for a UK firm try to give notice to his company. The company refused to accept his giving notice & threatened legal action against him if he didn't give it-least 12 months notice... So 0 days notice is surprising here.
rkk3··on Homelessness Is a Housing Problem
> These policy experts need to sit down with social workers, case managers, ER and psychiatric center physicians and staff.

> The most visible homeless people that are the jarring entropy in American cities are always going to be the low functioning indigent population with mental health and/or addiction issues.

The most visible homeless are also a small minority of the people who deal with Homelessness in America - which is why they are addressing housing. California had a homeless population of 150,000 in 2021 [1], most whom were not living on the sidewalk & dealing with drug and/or psychiatric problems.
