rjbwork··on 'Operation 404' Results in First Prison Sentence for Pirate IPTV Operator
Definitely too on the nose. 402 probably sits in the same boat lol.
rjbwork··on Recent 'MFA Bombing' Attacks Targeting Apple Users
>Then keep a hard copy in a safe. Been contemplating sending my parents a safe (who live several states away) with keys on a sheet of paper without context that only I have the combination too. But not sure yet.

A friend of mine who was (maybe is? he knows I'm not a fan so we don't talk about it much) big into crypto stores his secrets in similar safes with trusted friends and family around the country. I think it's a good idea for things like this tbh.

rjbwork··on Zoom added a mail feature. Tell me why?
Convergent evolution would be the general term I think. Not sure if there's a pithy technological or software -ism.
rjbwork··on The Reddits
My thoughts exactly. PG just writing a fluff piece to try to get them a lil IPO pop.
rjbwork··on Shattered Pixel Dungeon is an open-source traditional roguelike dungeon crawler
Currently hung up on CDDA. Probably the most complicated hardcore game I've ever touched. Learning curve like a brick wall. Incredibly rewarding to master though.

Really love that it's FOSS. I've got a bunch of scripts I run to scan the game files to learn things that are hard to get just from the in game menus.

rjbwork··on 900 Sites, 125M accounts, 1 Vulnerability
Correct me if I'm wrong, but 75% of sites with these vulns are still just hanging out there ready to be dumped, according to the end of this post?

Insane.

Some days I think one ought to be licensed to touch a computer.

rjbwork··on The Fed's Big Problem, There Are Two Economies but Only One Interest Rate
>stop handing out all kinds of subsidies, welfare payments and other transfers.

We can agree there as well. But unprecedented wealth accumulation at the top is not some mysterious magical force - it's what happens when we stop taxing capital accumulation the way we used to. Both are necessary to control money supply.

rjbwork··on The Fed's Big Problem, There Are Two Economies but Only One Interest Rate
The Fed's biggest problem is a gridlocked congress and a categorical reluctance to take money out of existence at the rate it needs to be (e.g. tax the rich). It's tantamount to trying to fly a hot air balloon. You might be able to keep the thing from crashing, but all you've got is one lever and you've got no real control over where it's going.
rjbwork··on Winning a hackathon, losing my sanity
I don't necessarily disagree. But you get what you pay for. These public institutions typically put out bids for projects and take the lowest one. Incentives matter and these types of organizations are incentivizing the production of cheap and poorly made software.

Yeah. At risk of making a drama/flame thread...

Please have mercy dang.

rjbwork··on Reddit's long, rocky road to an IPO
Or something like Kagi. Nobody will pay for it now because of what spez has done during his most recent tenure, but there was a point in time where I truly think turning it into a paid service was viable.

I've been on the site since 2005 and turned down the ability to buy the stock early, and intend on throwing a couple thousand dollars at shorting it. I don't trust the c-suite, admins, or devs at all anymore. Spez directly edited a user's comment in the database. Admins directly manipulated the /r/place database.

I'm still there because...the fediverse sucks, and I can still use my hacked up Reddit is Fun client and old.reddit.com, but if that set of circumstances changes, I don't anticipate sticking around.

rjbwork··on Winning a hackathon, losing my sanity
Absolutely. I'm not trying to dump on them. It may not have come through with my choice of verbiage, but there's something romantic (in the aesthetic sense) and admirable about what they've done and their attitudes. That kind of unbridled optimism and confidence of youth that can be hard to cultivate as we get older.
rjbwork··on Winning a hackathon, losing my sanity
Cool project and write up.

An aside - while I love the snark and making fun of these "legacy" systems, it has given me a window into my own maturity as an engineer. I was absolutely this cavalier and cocky about poorly implemented systems I've been a user or admin of in the past. But having now spent nearly a decade and a half getting paid for this work and seeing a lot of stuff and the evolution of best practices, I have much more empathy for the organizations and authors of these systems. There are very very few programs that ever achieve something like elegance and beauty when they collide with the real world.

rjbwork··on Vehicle brakes produce charged particles that may harm public health: study
Yep. Pretty much any kind of wear and tear part that is on an EV wears worse compared to a similarly powerful ICE. It's probably a wash or better because they don't use petroleum products for propulsion, but it is definitely a thing that needs to be considered. EV's are not some kind of panacea.
rjbwork··on Boeing whistleblower found dead in US
They were actually referencing Russia, I'm pretty sure.
rjbwork··on Tell HN: NetworkSolutions.com lost the ability to update root DNS w/ custom DNS
This is fairly surprising and indeed, alarming. They've been in the game forever. If anyone should be able to do basic functions of their company, it should be them.

I wonder how much value has been extracted in the name of efficiency that it's gotten to the point they've lost the ability to perform the basic functions of being a registrar?

rjbwork··on How to become a pirate archivist (2022)
I've seen a lot of concerts that I wouldn't have gone to if they didn't have their music on Spotify.
rjbwork··on Expanding Our Partnership with Google
Yes, this is called enshittification. It has absolutely been the game plan for the past 15 years or so.
rjbwork··on Forgetting the history of Unix is coding us into a corner
I don't think this lesson is getting lost accidentally, but intentionally. There was a brief moment in the late 00's/early 10's where companies were creating these rich web API's that would let you (and other services acting on your behalf) interact with their system in arbitrary and novel ways. But that turned out to not be very profitable (or at the very least, wouldn't let you create a walled garden that would get 100x exit for your VC's) so we've steadily moved to more locked down, less interactive, less open, less useful, but ultimately more profitable services.

Emblematic of this journey is Twitter, I think.

rjbwork··on Forgetting the history of Unix is coding us into a corner
False dichotomy. I like "T-shaped" engineers. Someone with a breadth of experience that is an expert in a small subset.
rjbwork··on IRS: billions in overdue/unpaid taxes to be collected with new funding
I don't know if this is true, but I certainly hope it is. That whole PPP thing is one of the biggest upward transfers of wealth this country has ever seen. Disgusting.
rjbwork··on jQuery v4.0 Beta
This is pretty funny because the front end team at my company decided last year to migrate from Vue to React because Vue is too complicated and it's hard to find people who know it vs React. Impossible for me to get a read on this stuff. Such a clusterfuck of an ecosystem.
rjbwork··on We might want to regularly keep track of how important each server is
I see. I guess there's two components - prioritization for loadshedding, and knowing how to actually turn things off to shed the load. You're saying k8s makes the latter very easy, and it was actually about that latter exercise of mapping workload to infra, not enumeration and prioritization of services.
rjbwork··on jQuery v4.0 Beta
>It's very hard to reason about DOM

I don't mean to be overly snarky here, but as someone who's just totally out of their depth in modern web UI - is that why people like these frameworks? Because they're very easy to reason about? I've generally found them to be mountains and mountains of boilerplate and spaghetti, but I really do not have a wide base of experience to pull from on this topic.

rjbwork··on We might want to regularly keep track of how important each server is
And what if you only have 33% of your nominal cluster capacity available because the AC goes out in your server room?

Now which containers should your cluster stop running?

You haven't actually solved anything with this, you've just changed the abstraction layer at which you need to make decisions. Probably an improvement, but does not obviate some kind of load shedding heuristic.

rjbwork··on We might want to regularly keep track of how important each server is
> the boss had the temerity to imply I had something to do with it.

What was your response? I feel like mine would be "you are now accusing me of a severe crime, all further correspondence will be through my lawyer, good luck".

rjbwork··on We built our customer data warehouse all on Postgres
In the MS ecosystem they have the SSDT data tools and unit test projects. It uses the designer functionality of VS to allow you to write your arrange, act, and teardown in pure SQL, and gives some basic condition builders for result sets tor your assert, with an escape hatch if that's insufficient.
rjbwork··on What's something difficult programmers make look easy?
Yup. When I get frustrated I just take a deep breath and then remember how relatively easy and well compensated this career is compared to just about anything else - for me, anyway.
rjbwork··on Did a 1997 merger ruin Boeing?
Seems like if you do this over and over and over again under different brands - say on like a staggered Decade schedule - you optimize your profits, milking as much out of your market as possible while severely cutting cost and quality and competence.
rjbwork··on SEC has not approved Bitcoin ETFs [fixed]
web3 is the moniker these crypto-zealots use for their crypto-currency-all-the-things efforts.

It secondarily has connotations of decentralization with stuff like Mastodon, but relatively few people care about that stuff.
