rjbwork··on The story of DOGE, as told by federal workers
>I don't know who this person is

Pretty much the most important person behind what is going on in this country right now from an ideological and policy prescription perspective as it relates to the executive.

rjbwork··on The story of DOGE, as told by federal workers
Yes. They've said it even more blatantly.

“And so I come full circle on this response and just want to encourage you with some substance that we are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

These people do not believe in America as it exists or the promise of what it could be. They hate us and they want to destroy what we have to create something fundamentally different.

>You’d think shareholders would be pro-competition in the end, though—I certainly would prefer that.

The end game of capitalism is monopoly. Why would shareholders want competition that prevents them from extracting maximum profit?

rjbwork··on Cap'n Web: a new RPC system for browsers and web servers
Fork it. End of the day some guys decided they wanted to make money and the corporations profiting off their labor weren't paying up. These things don't happen in a vacuum. Does your company have a multi-thousand dollar a year budget to make sure your dependencies are sustainable?
rjbwork··on Cap'n Web: a new RPC system for browsers and web servers
It's one of the most widely used languages out there actually. But it's primarily used at buttoned up and boring SMB's/enterprise backoffices. We're not out here touting our new framework of the month to kafloogle the whatzit. We're just building systems with a good language and ecosystem that's getting better every year.

I've worked only at startups/small businesses since I graduated university and it's all been in C#.

rjbwork··on They Thought They Were Free (1955)
This is why people say that "fascism is the failure mode of capitalism." When the rich and powerful get too fat off their structural advantages and society starts coming apart at the seams, capital will align with anti-democratic, anti-freedom, bigoted, and genocidal forces to suppress change rather than relinquish some wealth and power.

They would rather rule over ashes than join us in a little bit more of an equitable society.

rjbwork··on Homeowners insurance is pricing people out in disaster-prone cities
I didn't move to Florida for a reason. They voted for this repeatedly and are still doing so. No sympathy from me, sorry.
rjbwork··on Mail Carriers Pause US Deliveries as Tariff Shift Sows Confusion
Ding ding ding! From here on out it's all fake. I expect some private firms that are able to collect somewhat accurate economic data to make a killing, given the government is about to go full China and just lie about the numbers.
rjbwork··on End well, this won't: UK commissioner suggests govt stops kids from using VPNs
It won't. It will simply allow the government to further track people and attribute "anonymous" online activity to individual citizens. It's absolutely an Orwellian program and has nothing to do with the well-being of children.

Debugger tooling is helpful here. Rider's debugger easily shows every intermediate result set in long chained LINQ method call chains.

>How come people will vehemently defend democracy as the only just system of governance at the nation state level but are perfectly OK with dictatorship at the company level?

Funny you should ask this. A co-worker was unironically glazing monarchies and suggested some books to me when we were drinking at dinner Friday. I was disgusted, tbh. But do not underestimate the desire of people to be ruled and told how to think and act.

rjbwork··on Hire People Who Care (2020)
Yup. If they won't show you a cap table or if you have different shares from the founders, you value it at zero until proven otherwise (liquidity event).

Yeah but like 23 dudes can have more money than god, so this is a moral imperative.
rjbwork··on New executive order puts all grants under political control
Well, hundreds of elected representatives and a handful of judges have had to entirely abdicate their responsibility and power for us to arrive at this point. It's not just one guy.
rjbwork··on Perplexity is using stealth, undeclared crawlers to evade no-crawl directives
How is it wrong to send my personal shopper? How is it wrong to have an agent act directly on my behalf?

It's like saying a web browser that is customized in any way is wrong. If one configures their browser to eagerly load links so that their next click is instant, is that now wrong?

rjbwork··on Perplexity is using stealth, undeclared crawlers to evade no-crawl directives
But I can send my personal shopper and you'll be none the wiser.
rjbwork··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
Frankly, I can't be arsed to watch people stumble around for 4 hours. It's an hour for my sanity and yours.
rjbwork··on Use Your Type System
Have you used this in production? It seems appealing but seems so anti-thetical to the common sorts of engineering cultures I've seen where this sort of rigorous thinking does not exactly abound.
rjbwork··on AccuWeather to discontinue free access to Core Weather API
Leveraged buying/private equity play at the scale of the nation state.
rjbwork··on AccuWeather to discontinue free access to Core Weather API
Well, there are varying opinions on that. I agree with you somewhat, but many that "voted for that" have said otherwise and either 1) didn't ever hear about said document or 2) actively dismissed it as "fake news" or 3) believed the president when he said he'd never heard of it and it wouldn't be his agenda.
rjbwork··on AccuWeather to discontinue free access to Core Weather API
We are. Just look at the current administration. What they've accomplished in just 6 months is staggering.

We've just let the wrong sort of people control our communication infrastructure, set the messages disseminated by that infrastructure, and take power in a multi-pronged attack.

There's no reason there couldn't have been an FDR-esque strongman driven emulation of China's approach.

Instead we're blowing up the national debt, cutting services, dismantling soft power, destroying our scientific and academic infrastructure, and expanding the military.

>But with the current community, I'm afraid they'll never figure this out.

I hope that remains the case. File structure inferred namespacing to save one line per file seems like a ridiculous breaking change. If you're looking for succinctness to the level that something like that matters in your line/character count, use Perl or something.

If you're looking for something like scripting without a lot of fanfare, just look at https://devblogs.microsoft.com/dotnet/announcing-dotnet-run-...

Are there any Datomic-like query layers on top of Postgres for approaches like this where you're recording immutable occurrences rather than updating mutable records?

Think of them as variables - a stand in for any given file format or modern operating system.
rjbwork··on The wire that transforms much of Manhattan into one big, symbolic home (2017)
A very silly thing to say. The Hasids of New York are some of the most prominent anti-zionists in the United States.
rjbwork··on Dystopian tales of that time when I sold out to Google
Somehow 99.999% of the world's economy takes place upon it. Is all economic activity from the advent of banks to now not to be taken seriously?
rjbwork··on Dystopian tales of that time when I sold out to Google
A combination of a persistent strain of rugged individualist libertarian attitudes and ego. Everyone thinking we're better than everyone else and if only we could be in charge everything would be better than if those other idiots were prevents the kind of solidarity needed to do co-ops or professional associations or partnerships like lawyers.
rjbwork··on Curtis Yarvin's Plot Against America
