rixed··on GPU World
Since the dawn of industry, people have been amazed by the new possibilities and how that would affect society once it's evenly distributed. Technical progress has been going on, percolating in every places and down to every person. Yet it's never been "evenly distributed".

What would happen when every one would have access to Internet? How different will the world be when everyone carries a computer in their pocket? Can communicate with anyone regardless of location and language, with no intermediary? Those were questions we used to ask ourselves not so long ago. Turned out: not much have changed.

For the future to be evenly distributed, much bigger changes will have to happen than large scale manufacture of efficient GPUs. Otherwise, tech will just be used to make sure progress and knowledge stays unevently distributed. That's the whole game of herding humans, after all; It's called "organized scarcity".

rixed··on Fastpotify
Yes sorry, fixed. Thanks!
rixed··on Fastpotify
Another site tricking users willing to look at the code into starring the repo instead.

How desperate do you need to be to resort to this?

rixed··on Separating logic and language
Did you write more about that experience somewhere?

This seems to corroborate my feeling that aptitude with language is a very poor proxy for intelligence, although it's often used as one. My own experience is that I'm less struggling to find the right words and sounds more clever at the times when my brain is actually empty and I'm "not there", and at the contrary the more "self-aware" I am and the more I struggle to articulate my thoughts, as if my brain (or ego?) was stepping in the way and slowing me down by trying to supervise what I'm saying too closely, making me sounds dumb.

rixed··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
The issue is not that Linux lacks a central authority that holds some encryption keys and controls what software you can run. The issue is that you should not run any software from a source that can't be trusted. When we used to run only software from community distros or that we compile ourselves, launching a malicious program was a non issue.
rixed··on New MCP Roadmap
Interesting, thank you. Are you aware of any quantitative data to back up the claim that llms are more performant in code mode than mcp mode? Not that i doubt it, but I'm curious about how big of a difference it can make.
rixed··on The New MCP Roadmap
What do you mean "as code mode"?
rixed··on Detecting scraper bots through scroll behaviour
Very few "user facing" applications will have to deal with real users any longer. From an author's point of view let's admit that it will make things easier.
rixed··on Companies promote incompetent employees to management tolimit damage they can do
Companies do not promote anyone. People do. For all kinds of reason that are more personal/politics as the organization gets larger.
rixed··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
The use case they have in mind may be screenshots triggered by another app, not by the user.
rixed··on A shell exclamation mark is not for yelling. Be lazy
If you find this interesting, don't wait for a random blogpost to appear by chance on HN, go read some manage today!
rixed··on Confessions of a Long-Distance Sailor
Something I've read on HN once, and that nailed it for me: in the middle of the Pacific you are further away from any possible rescue than if you were on the ISS.
rixed··on Unexpected events and prosocial behavior: the Batman effect (2025)

  > culturally, you might be almost embarrassed to offer your seat
Haha exactly, but what's worse: the old person might think "damn! Another kid who believe I'm too old to stand up. Let's pretend I'm thankful to not embarrass him " :)
rixed··on How LLMs accelerated Cloudy development? not by typing code for me
An observation from my own workflow: the gain from doing what I know how to do already is nothing compared to the gain from redefining what a modern app has to be.
rixed··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
You don't measure tooling quality with devs' enjoyment, though, but with what the tools make possible.

Technical merit is not correlated to popularity, after all.

rixed··on Stateless MCP has recaptured my interest
why is MCP a pain in Macos?
rixed··on Bonsai: Janestreet's UI Library
Did you maybe confuse bonsai with a CSS library? How to build web UI != How to style HTML. Bonsai solves a different problem.
rixed··on Bonsai: Janestreet's UI Library
What do you mean? What's the connection with the product teams? Why would product teams care what low level web framework is used?
rixed··on Bonsai: Janestreet's UI Library
The docs directory happen to be missing, therefore the links to the quick guide and to "thinking in bonsai" pages from the readme are broken.

Also, I'm wondering how does bonsai-web update the DOM, is it via direct modification of the changed elements, or via some DOM differ? I'd say from direct update from a quick look at the source, but I'm unsure.

rixed··on Why Book Corners won't sync contributions back to OpenStreetMap
I wouldn't use gmap as a benchmark for up to date POIs, at least in some European countries. And I'm not talking about inaccurate opening times; but about places that closed during Covid but are still on the map.
rixed··on F*: A general-purpose proof-oriented programming language
What do you mean "express calling"? You mean calling the former C versions of the functions not yet ported, while asserting their behavior?
rixed··on F*: A general-purpose proof-oriented programming language
No indeed I'm not a fan. I find it brittle and arbitrary for data values especially; that also makes automatic code generation and edition harder, for no good reason. But that's not an important consideration either way.
rixed··on F*: A general-purpose proof-oriented programming language
I'm the opposite: when landing in a programming language site I want to know the user case the authors had in mind, the memory model, the type system, the compilation targets, the data layout, the control structures, and only at the end just check that the syntax is not indentation based.
rixed··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
"Bureaucracy" has been an entire field of study for more than a century at that point. But WMF is not bureaucracy any more than the FIFA is bureaucracy. It is curruption; That of the stated ideals of the origin: non profit, decentralisation and democracy.
rixed··on Elena, a library for building Progressive Web Components
Step back, and think about the fact that in 2026, the most regarded news site in tech is featuring a tool to build the simplest of UI elements.
rixed··on Four Time Scales for Technology Development and Deployment
I don't see AI deployed much outside of text production (which includes code). I believe AI could, as of yesterday, already replace or supplement most of decision taking all across the org chart, but that's not what I'm seeing. It is less surprising if you consider the economy as a social game of work appropriation rather than a process to make production more efficient, though.
rixed··on China begins producing advanced chipmaking deep-ultraviolet lithography machines
Also: "Oh my god some economic development!?! We need urgently to think of a way to hamper it!"
rixed··on Teach yourself programming in ten years (1998)
True! But it is also true that you learn better by doing yourself. The knowledge acquired by chatting endlessly is vast but shallow, that acquired by researching yourself and practicing is deep but narrow. We should be equally afraid of both.
rixed··on Superlogical
Meta, won't comment on the site, won't click. I'm fed up with this category of click baity titles that are designed to be enigmatic rather than informative.

The guideline do not mention this, apart maybe from:

If the title includes the name of the site, please take it out, because the site name will be displayed after the link.
I'd prefer HN if we made it a habit to editorialize such titles consisting solely of a Domainname or a single word.
rixed··on New HIV vaccine shows unprecedented success in preclinical study

Perhaps road accidents, or at least fatalities, can be reduced more than you realize.
You are talking past each others. The exemple of Australia (or was it new Zealand?) shows that accidents can be lowered, as much as thé exemple of south Africa shows they can't.

I've always found this misunderstanding fascinating; it touches on the physical reality of sociological laws, the origin and purpose of morality, as well of course as supporting in part the modern political divides.
