rishav_sharan··on Five Companies Produce Nearly 25 Percent of All Plastic Waste Worldwide
No, but it definitely should be in Coca Cola's charter to explore and invest in biodegradable alternatives. And the only way to hold such immense companies to their environmental responsibilities is either regulation or consumer perception.
rishav_sharan··on Amazon Makes It Harder for Disabled Employees to Work from Home
Laying off people via wfh, irrespective of their disability seems to be pretty much in the vogue right now
rishav_sharan··on Math is still catching up to the genius of Ramanujan
Can you share any links which can help me read up more on this?

Also, a cursory search on internet doesn't brings anything conclusive about Aryabhata being a Shudra.

rishav_sharan··on Phenomenal consciousness is alien to us: SETI and the Fermi paradox
Can someone ELI5? Not able to process all the heavy terms.
rishav_sharan··on Biblical plant with medicinal properties resurrected from 1,000-year-old seed
Here's how I understand it, though I am just a layperson;

As all the strands of DNA in the cells of the seed degrade in different ways, the cells can still patch up the damaged DNA.

rishav_sharan··on Show HN: Kameo – Fault-tolerant async actors built on Tokio
likely dumb question, but can this allow me to build trivial concurrent & parallel local apps? being able to parallelize the load across all the cores is important to me.
rishav_sharan··on Why TCP needs 3 handshakes
Isn't the whole point here that handshakes are cheaper compared to the actual content? If you use the content as the handshake itself, you can end up with huge content only to find out that the conversation didn't work.

That conversation can also go like;

A: Can you hear me?

B: Yes

A: What is the full unabridged story of War and Peace?

B: <...>

A: I am going to a take a nap for now, goodbye!

B: ... Goodbye!

rishav_sharan··on C2y Proposal: Essential Effects for C
Yep. Basic hash table. Spec out all undefined behaviour. Standardize abi. Etc. so many things to do with c to actually make it useful instead of c++ lite
rishav_sharan··on AMD's Radeon 890M: Strix Point's Bigger iGPU
I love how well Intel's Arc iGPU and AMDs Strix Point iGPU are doing. I am planning to get an iGPU laptop with 64 Gb RAM. I plan on using local llms and image generators and hopefully with that large of shared RAM that shouldn't be too much of a problem. But I am worried that all LLM tools today are pretty much NVidia specific, and I wouldn't be able to get my local setup going.
rishav_sharan··on Prevention of HIV
Talking of studies, from the same wiki

A 2022 study invalidated the common argument as is for high medication costs that research and development investments are reflected in and necessitate the treatment costs, finding no correlation for investments in drugs (for cases where transparency was sufficient) and their costs.[20][21]
rishav_sharan··on Passengers at EU Airports Not Allowed over 100ml of Liquids on Cabin Luggage
Its the same in India as well. Can't take any bottle with more than 100 ml of fluids in it inside the security area.
rishav_sharan··on Why Alaska Rivers Are Turning an Eerie Orange
From the article, the Cause:

The reason for the change in color was as alarming as its hue: The waters are rusting. As permafrost melts, long-stored acids and metals—including iron—are released into rivers, where they interact with oxygen, turning the water from clear blue to a milky orange, according to new research in the journal Communications: Earth and Environment.
The impact:

That cost goes deeper than the rivers’ orange, turbid surface. The contaminated waters aren’t healthy for fish and the aquatic insects they eat, which threatens fisheries that local communities and wildlife rely on.
So we are seeing more and more of the outcomes of the climate catastrophe. I don't know what it will take for regulators to make the climate change impact their primary priority. At what point will the frog know that the water is hot enough.
rishav_sharan··on How GCC and Clang handle statically known undefined behaviour
To me, the very fact that one of the most used Programming languages ever, has undefined behavior - boggles the mind. IMO It is one of the worst parts of C (other than using pointers for Arrays, its string implementation and 0 based indices).

I really don't understand why the C standards body can't just define what should be the intended failure behavior in case of specific UB cases, and then the compiler developers to onboard this spec. There should be no impact to backwards compat because

a. this will be a new C version b. No program ever should be defined around the UB behavior

But UB still exist in 2024 and will likely do till I am too old to whine on the internet about it.

rishav_sharan··on Serialization for C# Games
For simpler games with simple state which can be expressed in relationships, it is definitely a good solution. However, as games get more complex, modeling the game state in just relations is harder. Its much simpler to model state in an object like structure. At least for me.

rishav_sharan··on Veo
Now that the first direct competitor to Sora has been announced, I am sure Sora will be suddenly ready for public consumption, all it's ai safety concerns forgotten
rishav_sharan··on Cost of Living Index by Country 2024 – Numbeo
its QoL index is also remarkably low
rishav_sharan··on Cost of Living Index by Country 2024 – Numbeo
has anyone done a simple merging of the Cost of living and quality of living to get the top 10 countries with the lowest cost of living but relatively highest quality of living?
rishav_sharan··on Fired Americans Say Indian Firm Gave Their Jobs to H-1B Visa Holders
> China represents an even larger pool

I am curious why would you think that given India has a slightly larger population than China now, and larger % of those who can speak English

rishav_sharan··on Cranelift code generation comes to Rust
It sucks that there is no way to use cranelift from outside of rust to create your own toy language. I would have loved to use cranelift in a toy compiler, but I am not ready to pay the Rust price of complexity.
rishav_sharan··on Microsoft stole my Chrome tabs, and it wants yours, too
personally, I love the split tab view. Works really well during web dev where I can leave the left split to 3/4th size and the other split to show mobile like view port. With hot reloading, that makes things super nice.
rishav_sharan··on I hacked a train toilet
It's just shitty research

rishav_sharan··on Ask HN: What web development stack do you prefer in 2024?
I use vanilla js with tailwind for the frontend. Currently building on top of Cloudflare Pages and MySQL.
rishav_sharan··on Changes at Riot Games and the road ahead
December marks the end of the fiscal year for many companies, making January an ideal month for "organisational realignment and adjustment".
rishav_sharan··on Anime is a $25B industry that pays its animators pennies
The French have their own thing going on. Fortiche and Blue Spirit are making some of the most beautiful animations we have seen in western TV series. They draw from a rich heritage of art and comics.
rishav_sharan··on AI Toolkit: Give a brain to your game's NPCs, a header-only C++ library
is there a variant of such a toolkit which can be compiled into a dynamic library? I would love to use something like this, but I don't use cpp.
rishav_sharan··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
In India the price gap is far far worse.

Citroen C3 Petrol is 6.5L while the electric version starts from 13L. A straight 100% markup.

Tata Tiago Petrol starts from 6L while the electric version is 9.5L, with a 50% markup.

Despite this almost borderline stupid markup, electric care sales in India is growing 40% YoY.

I would love to buy an electric car, but I don't think we are getting a cheap one anytime soon. I'd rather wait and drive my old beat up car.
