risfriend··on Motorola phones have started hijacking the Amazon app to insert affiliate codes
This is really unethical, replacing original app shortcuts breaks trust.
risfriend··on Claude for Legal
should rename to "claude for US legal"
risfriend··on Let's Buy Spirit Air
> how the major airlines now are more of a "bank that happens to have planes"

Here is a decent video explaining it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggUduBmvQ_4

risfriend··on MacBook Neo
No keyboard backlighting is itself a dealbreaker for me.
risfriend··on ChatGPT Health
I have been misdiagnosed and taken wrong medicine for 4 years for a problem by a top specialist, the doctor kept making up reasons on why I'm not getting better.

By luck I consulted with another specialist due the former doctor not being available at and odd time, and some re-tests help determine that I need a different class of medicines. I was better within months.

4 years of wrong medicines and over confidence from a leading doctor. Now I have a tool to double check what doctor has recommended.

risfriend··on India orders smartphone makers to preload state-owned cyber safety app
This is just bad PR from Indian government. Communication minister clarifies the app is optional https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/technology/tech-news/tel...

Reuters/BBC have been famous to pounce and sensationalizing.

risfriend··on How actors remember their lines
Somehow reminded me of how Michael Scott remembers things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSi41cNvmXQ
risfriend··on AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd by looking at them
This is stuff for spy movies.
risfriend··on Calendar, Not Todos (2018)
Learnt this from a cxo few years ago and this has certainly helped - to be able to make time for yourself, every workspace task should be a calendar entry.
risfriend··on Nestlé baby foods loaded with unhealthy sugars, but only in poorer countries
Not surprised that Nestle behaves unethically.
risfriend··on The Graph of Wikipedia [video]
We don't need to find out, wikipedia itself documents it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_with_the_mo...
risfriend··on Webb and Hubble confirm Universe's expansion rate
The distance was also known in 16th century as per Hindu hymn of hanuman chalisa - https://hinduism.stackexchange.com/questions/10370/did-our-a...
risfriend··on Learn to Read Korean in 15 Minutes
I've become lazy after google translate app started translating from camera directly without even taking pictures. I've purchased online some Chinese products in past with not a letter of English on them but was able to read in seconds with Translate and camera.
risfriend··on Thanks FedEx, this is why we keep getting phished
And where is this?
risfriend··on How not to bomb your offer negotiation (2016)
A strategy you can follow is - Start with not budging to tell the number in your mind. There is typically a range of salary defined for each level. Let them make the first move where the recruiter will typically start with low or mid (if you did very well in interviews) value in the range. Negotiating 10-20% higher than that can be a tactic but avoid being too pushy.
risfriend··on How not to bomb your offer negotiation (2016)
My experience has been hiring managers defer this to recruiters within the company simply because its not their job, and also may not have the authority.
risfriend··on The IRS has all our tax data. Why doesn't its new website use it?
Exactly, then I should be able to see that my tax calculations include only my salary and I can fill in rest of the things to get additional deduction. Infact everyone would be able to see what IRS knows and what it doesn't and deductions taken into account etc. How is it not better?
risfriend··on Hell is other people: performance management at Big Tech
Microsoft is manager centric. Even when they tried to move away from bell curve, it led to more power in the hands of manager by giving them the budget.
risfriend··on Why Instagram failed to become TikTok
Just saying Instagram has become relevant outside of pure entertainment as well.
risfriend··on Why Instagram failed to become TikTok
Slightly digressing, thought atleast in India, Instagram has started catering to a lot of serious businesses especially startups. If you want to market, go to Instagram.. Well Tiktok has been banned but it was never taken here as a serious platform by businesses.
risfriend··on Why does holding a key fob to your head increase its range?
Fascinated by this, going to dig deep.
risfriend··on Google Will Stop Telling Law Enforcement Which Users Were Near a Crime
Google itself today tries to get you to back up everything online to be used across its ecosystem. If I choose to pause my "Web and app activity" - https://myactivity.google.com/activitycontrols?pli=1 after which my activity stops getting backed up online, Google also stops storing any sort of history on local device - across all google apps - either allow everything or zero history. No local caching, not even my last search shows up in maps.

Will be interested to see if this behavior changes.

risfriend··on LinkedIn shelved plan to migrate to Microsoft Azure cloud
My company migrated to Azure few years back. They can give good bulk discounts but on the flip side the experience with some of their infra and AKS has been choppy at times, with the support team taking time to fix or rca h/w issues. They do come back though. Would love to know how does it compare to long term experiences with other major cloud providers.
risfriend··on Plane got to top spot in project management on GitHub in less than a year

risfriend··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
Brother provide a default unique email id with your device but you can customise it, the id has be globally unique as Brother registers it.
risfriend··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
Well you can customise it with the brother printer. Brother itself registers your unique email id against your registered device, hence it has to be globally unique.
risfriend··on I worked in Amazon HR and was disgusted at what I was seeing with PIP plans
I'm a manager and have been forced to apply similar PIP process to my team and it is truly horrible when the folks are forcefully put in the lowest performance just to satisfy the projected yearly budget. The 2-3 month improvement process is hogwash and hardly anyone survives it, PIP means they're 90% going to be axed.
risfriend··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
The best part I like is it provides a unique email address and hosts a server inside it. I can literally just email a pdf and get it printed on back-back pages, no commands, love it!
risfriend··on Auto industry executives admit electric vehicle plans are in jeopardy
EV cars need replaceable batteries so that they can be charged at home. The batteries also need to become less heavier so people can carry it to their home to plug them in. There should also be some designated spare battery storage in car so that extra batteries can be kept. Without this, EVs would remain a privilege for a select few who can afford the private infra. Charging stations can only go so far. You can carry spare liquid gas in extreme circumstances, similar capabilities are needed here, everyone wants to be prepared for worst case.
risfriend··on Bing Chat responses infiltrated by ads pushing malware
This is very tastefully done, really like it.
