ripply··on Parler CEO Says Service Dropped by “Every Vendor” and Could End His Business
Yea all of this had already happened to gab with gab pivoting to activitypub a year or so ago to get around App Store bans. That the CEO didn’t plan for this is really a failure of leadership at Parler.
ripply··on Employees are leaving Facebook and torching the company in departure notes
If you were to truly believe fraud and impropriety occurred in the election you could rephrase your comment like this.

One faction actively did everything they could to undermine an election through fraud and impropriety, everyone else didn’t.

That is the divide.

This is what gp is talking about, both sides believing they are righteously just while they consume media in their bubbles.

ripply··on [dead]
Censoring people doesn’t magically solve anything, it just pushes those views and discussions elsewhere. That’s all that’s happening with Parler.

As to why the left doesn’t feel the same need, they are not censored as much on the major platforms as the major platforms are left leaning.

The catalyst for the recent Parler traffic was the Hunter Biden emails in which the New York Times were locked out of their Twitter for over a week for publishing a story. A lot of people viewed that as outright censorship that crossed the line so they went looking for somewhere where they could talk about it. That kind of censorship just doesn’t happen to the left because the right generally is more libertarian regarding free speech and permissive of speech in general.

ripply··on A 73-year-old Japanese artist took YouTube by storm
It really is a lot for Japan, if you ever visit ニコニコ動画 (https://nicovideo.jp) and look at the top videos, views pale in comparison to anything on Youtube. Nico video is #28 on Alexa in Japan (Youtube is #2) and is very very popular, it is a Japanese only Youtube site. It is so popular the Nintendo switch app to view the site came out a year before a Youtube app did (7/2017 vs 7/2018).
ripply··on Comcast will start charging Xfinity customers fees for exceeding their usage cap
Unlimited data with Comcast is only $30/month on top of your bill, having the overages upper limit be 3x the price of unlimited data though seems a little extreme.
ripply··on YouTube will now show ads on all videos even if creators don’t want them
This also works on iOS and you can even get a shortcut to let you bypass PIP being disabled and by pausing the video 2-3 times in picture mode you bug it out and can play the video with the screen off - not very convenient for short videos but longer ones it works well with.
ripply··on SEC raised the limit on Regulation Crowdfunding from $1.07M to $5M
This limit is for less financially savvy people (those who are not an Accredited Investor per the SEC) to invest money into startups. The idea is to put an upper limit on funding from mom and pop to reduce the potential harm - think the ICO bubble of 2018. During the bubble, it was almost impossible to invest in a SEC compliant ICO as an unaccredited US investor and a lot of that was due to this limit existing and putting an upper limit ($1M) on money invested by the less financially savvy. Overseas, ICOs boomed due to the lack of international regulation and there were a lot of outright scams and pump and dumps happening which US investors were pretty much barred from investing in due to SEC regulations.
ripply··on Apple building search engine to take on Google, report claims
It still uses CalDAV (not sure about CardDAV), it is just difficult to get the URLs as it involves watching network requests on the iCloud webapp.
ripply··on Nine in ten adults think buying latest smartphone is waste of money
To add to this, all the major phone carriers in the states engineer their plans to force you to buy new phones either through discounts or "free" bonus phones from them in order to get good value for what you are paying. It is almost always cheaper to go with a cheap MVNO plan and pay for your phone outright, you will come out ahead instead of paying $80-$100 a month with a major carrier while getting a "free" phone with the caveat you have to stick with them for 2 years. Its all engineered to get you to spend more money, if you look at the prices on MVNOs you will realize you are getting scammed - I pay $10/month for my minimal cellular plan through redpocket and getting more data only costs tens of dollars more, it doesn't come close to tmobile's prices.
ripply··on Netgear Firmware Requires Online Registration
I'm assuming it uses Bluetooth, if thats the case location access is required by Android to search for Bluetooth devices because Bluetooth devices don't move around very much and its possible to get your location if the app has access to a Bluetooth location database.
ripply··on Searching for 'VK' shows only a single result on DuckduckGo. Why?
It seems to have been fixed, I refreshed the tab I had open when this first popped up on hn (that had empty results) and the results look normal now (US).
ripply··on A Keyboard with Blank Keycaps Made Me an Expert Typist
With blank keycaps there's no way to cheat, it forces you to learn everything on the keyboard you use regardless of how often it is used. I have touch typed most of my life and switching to blank keycaps 5 years ago forced me to master all of the keyboard, specifically the less used keys.

Its also fun watching people try and type on your blank keycaps - they are all almost instantly lost at how to even start typing.

ripply··on Woman who was shot while pregnant is charged in fetus's death
The person who pulled the trigger was deamed to have acted in self defense and is not being charged. Getting a manslaughter charge when acting in self defense is what shouldn't make sense.
ripply··on Patreon Bars Anti-Feminist for Racist Speech, Inciting Revolt
An interesting view point on this, if there was collusion between Patreon and Paypal over what subsequently happened to subscribe star, it could violate anti-trust law.

ripply··on Libp2p – A modular network stack
It is what IPFS is built with, essentially they built out IPFS and made everything modular. It is being used in a lot of blockchain projects since it is so easy to develop with and write your own protocols.

Developing with the library essentially comes down to protobuf serialization logic inside a router with the path being the name of your protocol, just like you would in rails or node, everything else is handled by the library. To talk to a peer over your protocol you just need their address on the network (public key), your protocol name and to serialize your protobuf data to be written over the network, the libraries handle dialing/routing through connected peers if its not possible to directly connect to the peer.

ripply··on Show HN: Ethereum Canvas – Draw on the blockchain
For anyone not familiar with some of the proposed scaling features for Ethereum, quadratic sharding could alleviate this problem by having hundreds of Ethereum universes that can talk to each other and commit their root merkle hash to the main chain
