rip747··on Programming languages influence network
how is CFML (ColdFusion) not linked to Java? CFML runs on top of the JVM.
rip747··on Frameworks Round 6
checking out the documentation now. is there a google group or some place I can post questions to if I need help?
rip747··on Frameworks Round 6
i would really like to see how CFML engines (Railo, Adobe ColdFusion) and frameworks (FW/1, CFWheels, ColdBox) stack up in this comparison.

FD: I contribute to CFWheels

rip747··on Pizza Compass
the last 10 seconds of the video were a little weird.
rip747··on The story around the Linode hack
i'll never understand why way back in the day, someone thought that it would be a good idea to put all the scripts for the extension tags (like cfform) under the same parent directory (CFIDE) as the administrator.

If you're on windows XP or higher, give Paint.net a try: http://www.getpaint.net/

They even have a PSD plugin: http://psdplugin.codeplex.com/

rip747··on Introduction to Position Based Fluids
honestly, after watching the demonstration video, there is nothing in the video that i haven't seen in numerous hollywood films or games before. am i missing something? would someone care to explain what i should be looking for?
rip747··on MemSQL ships 2.0, scales across hundreds of nodes, thousands of cores
why is it that every company that has a blog either, a) doesn't have a link or b) buries the link to their main product site on their blog?
rip747··on Our tiny jQuery/Bootstrap rich text editor is now open-source
ahhhh the oldest argument on the internet "If you stop supporting their browser, they'll upgrade". no, they won't, they'll just stop using your service and go else where. And yes, this would hurt your bottom line.
rip747··on The DDoS that almost broke the Internet
why not just use opendns.com? you get all of these `benefits` and more without you having to configure and maintain a DNS server.

why is it that i cannot find a link to the github repo?
rip747··on Android is dead. Long live Android.
seriously??? couldn't the title be `Android founder stepping down`?

i can't stand these `_ is dead. long live_` titles. they're absolutely childish and convey _nothing_ about what the article entails.

rip747··on How I Beat Depression
its simple. if my wife doesn't take her medication she spirals down into a deep depression. it doesn't matter if she's at (what everyone would say) the happiest moments of her life, she's going to get depressed. now flip that when she's taking her meds, she is able to handle and snap out of it if things aren't going so well like any other normal person would. She still gets sad and feels bad, but _she gets over it_, where as if she's off her meds, _she doesn't_. i'm involved with this and see it on a daily basis.
rip747··on How I Beat Depression
no... what you've saying is false. There is a HUGE difference in feeling sad about a traumatic or past event versus the chemicals in your brain not working properly.

also this conversation is about true clinical depression and the difference between it and just feeling sad; it's not about some conspiracy theory of how every doctor wants us to be on meds or the fact that flushing medication down the toilet is poising our water supply.

please stay on topic if you want to continue the converation

rip747··on How I Beat Depression
and its also important to note that just because it worked for your buddy doesn't mean its going to work for you. it also means that just because it worked one time doesn't mean its going to work the next time. the best thing to do is to be monitored by a doctor so you can get the medical help right away if you need it.
rip747··on How I Beat Depression
`and can work on its own without medication, depending on the situation`

nail on the head! many people don't realize when they need to go to a doctor and get the meds they need.

rip747··on How I Beat Depression
what you describe is emotionally based, not chemically based. There is a HUGE difference.
rip747··on How I Beat Depression
this is the biggest misconception when it comes to clinical depression... that you can or did beat it. You can never or will never beat clinical depression, only suppress it. Beating something is finite and means that it can never happen again. The author gives great advice in the article about what steps he did to suppress this bout of depression, though if he doesn't stay the course chances are it will come back. The scary thing about clinical depression is, even if you continue to do the things that worked in the past to suppress it, it can still come back.

The one piece of advice that he doesn't give (or he might have and i'm just not catching it) is realizing that you have to listen to the people around you when they tell you that you look depressed. At that point, you need to get help immediately so you don't fall further down the hole.

btw... I'm not a doctor or anything. Let's just say that I have extensive experience with clinical depression and bipolar disorder.

rip747··on Bootstrap 3 preview
i really wish they wouldn't lock form into being horizontal or inline by putting a class on the form tag itself, but rather by using the fieldset tag. The whole reason is because sometime when you are doing a large form, some sections just flow better as an inline rather then a horizontal and vica-versa. I submitted a ticket about this a while back, but it must have been overruled.
rip747··on Launchrock for error pages
I really don't understand why you would submit the site to hackernews then. You only have one shot at a first impression especially if your service is a paid one and you're trying to make a sale. By not having an explanation of what the site's purpose, functionality and benefits are, you frustrate visitors that initially go to the site and risk them just writing it off.

It's a shame because after reading the explanation you give for your service, this is something that IS extremely useful with a low bar of entry. Please update the site as I would hate to see you lose revenue.

rip747··on App.net’s new direction
maybe i'm just not `getting it`, but what benefits does the app.net platform offer _exactly_ for developers? I could be wrong, but usually when services go from paid to free, its a sign.
rip747··on Confessions of a Git Skeptic
the only thing i hear about members of our team missing from svn are using externals. one of our members would create an external in his current client project to our open source repo. now while working on his client project, if he encountered a bug in our open source project, he could fix and test in the client project, but the change would get committed to our open source project.

while git has submodules, they no way near have the flexibility of externals. if git would incorporate the idea of externals, I think it would cure quite a few people's complaints.

rip747··on Groundwork - A Responsive HTML5, CSS and JavaScript Framework
my biggest problem with all of these framework is using them on an existing site. it would be great if all of them wrapped there styles in a parent class that way it wouldn't breaking existing styling.
rip747··on LinkedIn quietly discontinues GitHub app to ‘better invest’ resources
honestly sometimes i thought i was the only dev using this. i have many dev friends on github and linked in and never saw the app integrated into anyone else's profile. personally i don't think it's that big of a deal as you can just link to the projects in your profile. also it seemed that you really had no control over the `order` in which projects were displayed though the app. why would I want my personal github displayed on top of the major open source project i'm contributing to?
