rip747··on Rules for Creating Gorgeous UI, Part 2
that site is a lot fluff and soapboxing with no real value.

it give examples of sites with bad contrasting, but don't show what they would look like fixed up. Rule #1: if you're going to complain about something, give me a demo of the point you're trying to get across so I can see the benefit. You should even go as far as explaining the process you used.

just directing people to a bunch of links and "read this guide" does nothing

rip747··on Z Launcher
this is why android and other mobile os needs to have read/write permissions
rip747··on Philae has landed
would rather governments subsidies science then 95% of the other crap they throw money at.

science benefits us as a whole while most subsidies programs benefit a particular group or interest.

rip747··on Microsoft takes .NET open source and cross-platform
reading that tweet brought back feeling of the whole Rails, Merb merge. Awesome to hear!
rip747··on Microsoft takes .NET open source and cross-platform
LINQ is _the_ only reason I tolerate .net
rip747··on These numbers will remind you that doing a startup is brutal
Ok... I have to ask: Why in the world would stay there for 4 years, knowing after just 1 year, that you were only going to make 20K a year?

Seriously... the only thing I can come up with in my head is greed. You told that you would eventually receive this huge payout and that clouded your judgement.

rip747··on Reqr.es
am i missing something? i can't find where it tells how to craft the response.
rip747··on Show HN: StackShare – discover and discuss software stacks
hmmm... doesn't seem to detect cfml as being used. other than that, very nice!!!

I scanned the cfwheels repo: https://github.com/cfwheels/cfwheels

picked up almost everything that we're using

rip747··on [dead]
Flagged. this site tell us nothing about how this works.
rip747··on Ad blocker that clicks on the ads
this is absolutely moronic and childish

if you don't want to see ads, use adblock and be done with it. why do you now have to be a child and "one-up" the ad agencies by sending fake clicks to the them?

you do know that legitimate businesses and people advertise on these networks and the only thing you're going to be doing is draining their accounts. if you _think_ you're hurting the ad networks themselves by use this extension, you are living in a fantasy world. i'm sure the ad networks are laughing their way to the bank with an extension like this.

rip747··on You broke the internet. We'll make ourselves a GNU one
I'm not sure what point they are trying to get across, but that page is just horrible to look at.
rip747··on Google Inbox
I'm with you. currently i have 3 emails in my inbox. the rest are archived. Like 85% of the population, my inbox is a todo list not a social engagement.
rip747··on Magic Leap Secures $542M Led by Google
read the article, visited their website, watched their video.

still haven't a clue of what they are doing. maybe i'm a moron. can someone shed some light on what _exactly_ they are getting $542M for?

rip747··on Show HN: Four numbers can predict your lifetime risk of a heart attack
This has got to be off.

"I had a 50% lifetime risk of a heart attack. Yikes!"

not for nothing, but I entered in my numbers and got 68% and I smoke about a pack of day. If that's the case, then I'm not quitting any time soon.

rip747··on Show HN: Get coached by developers for free
"There no "documenting" feature in our roadmap"

how is this better then SO?

at least http://www.airpair.com/ puts up their videos for free (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX6ZQp3RdEU_9kFNrRB-rIQ) for all to see. You might want to consider that

rip747··on Show HN: Get coached by developers for free
that's the problem. later never happens. with SO the conversation becomes the documentation.
rip747··on Show HN: Get coached by developers for free
the problem with services like this is that once that issue is resolved, where is it going to be documented? I highly doubt that someone is going to take the time to enter in the question and solution somewhere for all to reference should they have the issue.

rip747··on The Great Robocoin Rip-off: How We Lost $25,000 Buying a Robocoin ATM
So you want a pat on the head or something for finally doing the right thing?

Sorry kid, but by you letting the situation escalate to this point shows me that you have no place in the business world. I really hope your company sees how poorly you've handled this situation and removes you from it.

rip747··on iSIGHT discovers vulnerability used in Russian cyber-espionage campaign
honestly, there needs to be a blacklist for companies that do these sort of things and iSIGHT needs to be on it.
rip747··on How Exercise May Protect Against Depression
Yoga and long walks work great in fighting my depression.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I notice a HUGE difference in my attitude and motivation if I sit for too long.

rip747··on Twitter flight invite page is built in ColdFusion
Mura... solid? I think not. More like convenient. It's one of two free CMS built on CFML. The second one being ContentBox.
rip747··on Twitter flight invite page is built in ColdFusion
FYI. Just because it's a CFM extension, doesn't mean that they are using ColdFusion (which is Adobe's CFML engine). They could very well be using Railo (http://www.getrailo.org/) or OpenBD (http://openbd.org/). Both of which are free, open sourced and magnitudes faster then ColdFusion.
rip747··on Show HN: Pagerbot, a chat bot for managing PagerDuty on-call schedules
just checked out pageduty and they seems kind of expensive. $40 per month, per user. How many users are you currently in your account?
rip747··on SlackTextViewController: A new growing text input for iOS
I'm with you. I don't do iOS development at all, but I will literally sit there and go through the entire code of every iOS control submission to Hacker News just to see how they accomplish what they do. I cannot believe how much code it takes to do something I feel you can accomplish easily in javascript.

Kudos to all the iOS developers out there. I don't know how you guys manage to do it, but I'm sure glad you do and are willing to share your code with the rest of us.

rip747··on Careful with that Buffer
Every time I read something about OS/2, I'm just waiting to see one of my old friends from IBM Boca Raton names pop in there. Man I loath of those days again. What a great bunch of people to work with. I loved it there and to this day LOVE OS/2.
rip747··on Tabnabbing: A New Type of Phishing Attack (2010)
Don't try to cover up the fact that you got played as well ;) We're all friends here, you can admit your mistakes :)
rip747··on Tabnabbing: A New Type of Phishing Attack (2010)
BINGO!!!

OP doesn't understand that this kind of attack (or most attacks for that matter) aren't targeted to the sophisticated user, its targeted to the majority of the population. The majority of the population isn't running noscript, is using the vanilla settings that the browser came with (which means javascript is turned on) and doesn't think twice about entering in their credentials into a site that they trust.

rip747··on Tabnabbing: A New Type of Phishing Attack (2010)
That's not the point. 99% of the people out there have it on.
rip747··on Tabnabbing: A New Type of Phishing Attack (2010)
Man did that fool me.

I clicked on the link and started to read the story, but then had to look up an IIS error in a new tab. After my search I closed the current tab and I'm face to face with an old gmail login page. I'm sitting there like "WTF?". I refresh the page and the blog post comes back?!?!?

I finish reading the post and realized what had just happened. Kudos to the author. That really is a brilliant attack.

rip747··on PullClean: Door handles as sanitizers
there are so many articles and studies out there suggesting that we are over sanitizing ourselves.

Gels and hand washing are one things, but how about actually wearing gloves and changing them when you are about to touch a patient?
