ridgered4··on The “Location Off” switch on your phone is a lie
> The phone's accelerometers will still run in aeroplane mode which can infer a surprising amount about your location.

I've heard of most of these but this one is new. How does this work? Are the accelerometers used to basically track direction and distance from a last known location?

ridgered4··on The “Location Off” switch on your phone is a lie
Really? Where do they deliver all the ads to in that case?
ridgered4··on Microsoft: Windows 10 22H2 is the final version of Windows 10
> It will reach its end of servicing in May 2024 (Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations editions) and in May 2025 (Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions).

So much for the 2025 end date I kept hearing. Only applies to the versions few people have.

ridgered4··on The Disappointment of 5G
I sometimes wonder if the dumber 5G conspiracies were seeded as part of a psyops campaign to paint anyone negative of 5G as a fringe lunatic.
ridgered4··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
Touchscreens were always just a horrible interface. Their only advantages were portability and recently cheapness. That made them the best choice for mobile devices but due to fad chasing and cost cutting they have been bolted onto every device where they have no business being in some cases with outright dangerous results.
ridgered4··on The transition from logins to cryptographic passkeys is getting messy
SMS requires a phone number which is an excellent user tracking signal. I don't know why ad companies like Google and Microsoft would want to give that up.
ridgered4··on OpenBSD: Viogpu(4), a VirtIO GPU driver, added to -current
I wish more progress was made on this feature. Vmware has had paravirtualized 3D acceleration in guests for over a decade even on their free player product and it is the one real feature I really miss.

I'd even just settle for a way to offload video decoding to the host GPU somehow.

ridgered4··on Imgur Updates TOS, Banning NSFW Content
I'm also curious on how this could work and actually be more cost effective. I just can't see the robot being a reliable method and the cost savings being there. It almost sounds like some one's pet project. The only really interesting property of bluray is that they supposedly can last a very long time unlike other media, but I'd think you'd still want some redundancy at which point hard disks seem like the way to go.
ridgered4··on Yubico is merging with ACQ Bure and intends to go public
Does anything prevent copying the token's private key to another token right now?
ridgered4··on Making a Linux home server sleep on idle and wake on demand – the simple way
2.5" hard disks actually use way less power than the 3.5" drives, but if you spin down the bigger drives they get down to about 1watt.

My server at home I actually use a 2.5" drive for the torrent scratch disk since I don't really need speed there I just need something that is always spun up with a moderate amount of space that doesn't use much power.

ridgered4··on Microsoft is using illegal bribes in the Middle East and Africa
Based on those trainings I also have to take yearly, the US has a weird carve out for "facilitation payments" that are basically just bribes to cut through red tape and delays that probably exist just to extract bribes in the first place. But I do remember the training calling out using a third party intermediary to launder your bribes isn't a defense and you're suppose to be responsible for how your money is used. I suspect the later isn't well enforced though but I couldn't say.
ridgered4··on Mass layoffs and absentee bosses create a morale crisis at Meta
That's how I read this. Facebook already had a failed facebook phone venture everyone seems to have forgotten about. Zuckerberg is trying to get to the new world first this time. Except even if VR takes off it would only be a niche compared to mobile so it doesn't really make sense. But AR could potentially and I guess VR might have been seen as a stepping stone to that.
ridgered4··on Sony backs Raspberry Pi with fresh funding, access to A.I. chips
Cannot comment on that location but I've noticed a few sellers on ebay seem too just take older 4GB ram chromebook and install linux on them before selling them for $50-75. If you're not as lazy as I am you can do the installation yourself of course.

I think the raspberry pi is mainly interesting for its small size, GPIO pins and very low idle power.

ridgered4··on Dashcam footage shows driverless cars clogging San Francisco
Anyone ever think about what a nightmare driverless cars will be if they actually work? Right now our crumbling infrastructure is loaded with traffic. Imagine if the max amount of driving a human can endure is removed entirely as a final constraint on the total utilization rate of this infrastructure and is replaced with a relentless driving machine that never tires or gets frustrated and has no fear of death.

People would commute up to 4 hours one way, napping in their cars, maybe even longer. Delivery vehicles running all hours of the night, perhaps with no one ever in them at all. People sending the cars to go pick things up or people that they otherwise wouldn't have time in their day to do.

Even if you don't want to live in your car that the pressure will still be exerted on you because you'll be competing with people that do. Cars instructed to circle the block in areas with no parking clogging the streets. You'll need a self driving car yourself to even get a spot since you'll never defeat all the robot vultures.

People will forget how to drive entirely of course so there will be no going back. The whole thing will feed on itself, people will need more self driving cars to get back the time stolen by other self driving cars.

ridgered4··on CAN Injection: Keyless car theft
Maybe they have felony convictions, dubious immigration status or personality problems that make traditional legal employment difficult or impossible for them. Or maybe it just pays well.
ridgered4··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
We have webex and Teams at work. Neither one of them are great but unless I'm missing something Teams lacked a precheck feature where I can test my Mic before actually joining the meeting which is easily the main reason I despise it. Teams also occasionally just refuses to work with part of my audio setup until I rejoin so it also the one that I need the precheck for most.
ridgered4··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
Interesting idea, I have the same problem with cold hands. I currently wear finger-less wool gloves but it isn't a perfect solution either.
ridgered4··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
It seems like the mistake there would be implementing the mute in the software instead of a proper hardware shutoff.
ridgered4··on 75% of the Most Played Games on Steam Are Playable on the Steam Deck
Weird, I have used the steam controller a lot and bizarrely my kids even picked them up. I find the right track pad on the steam deck smaller than I'd like and I wish they hadn't relocated the buttons. But I really wanted a d-pad on the steam controller so I could use it for emulation more seamlessly so I was glad to see that on the deck.
ridgered4··on Windows 11 KB5023778 update adds promotions to the Start menu
With eye tracking they will be able to determine your interest level to allow additional targeted advertising of things that you eye lingers on. If you saw an alcohol ad and lingered on it because you're a recovering alcoholic they'll know to really ramp up the ads on that since they've identified you as having a weakness to them. Maybe they'll even use iris scans or databases of eye movement patterns to identify you as an individual for even better user tracking.
ridgered4··on Ubuntu stops shipping Flatpak by default
Forced auto updates and a closed store mean I won't even try to like snaps. Those are the top two reasons I moved off Windows.
ridgered4··on Amazon starts flagging frequently returned products that you maybe shouldn’t buy
I've noticed several products recently that used an old product entry where the bulk of the older reviews were written in Spanish or German. Once translated you find they are gushing about a comic book they loved rather than the computer interface adapters I was looking at. Pretty sneaky since Amazon puts foreign reviews in a different bucket that you have to drill down into, I usually only do so myself when there aren't many English reviews.
ridgered4··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
Can you download and save the .apk file of the older app perhaps? This obviously would require you to know ahead of time what you were going to potentially use the device for in the future, which is ridiculous.
ridgered4··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
> I like drag-to-side-to-go-halfscreen for window management

Couldn't you do this in Windows 7 with WinKey+Left or WinKey+Right? I guess I am kind of keyboard oriented in my usage though, I mostly get frustrated with the edge of screen mouse features because I mostly enable them by accident.

ridgered4··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
> Windows Vista was good by SP1 but required 2GB of RAM. WinSxS disk usage was only fixed on Win7, though.

Was it? I remember they added a tool that claimed it would clean it up but in practice it didn't seem to do much.

I thought Windows 10 just papered over the whole mess by doing an in place upgrade of the whole OS every 6-12 months.

ridgered4··on America’s online privacy problems are much bigger than TikTok
That doesn't sound like something that powerful US corporations are that worried about so I'm surprised we talked about it at all.
ridgered4··on The FTC wants to ban tough-to-cancel subscriptions
Do you still need to use your real name and address with the virtual cards? Hearing the stories about collections it seems to me like the only logical move is to avoid these services all together.
ridgered4··on The FTC wants to ban tough-to-cancel subscriptions
Some of these services I'm interested in enough I'd be willing to pay for a few months to try them. But magazine subscriptions and comcast have trained me to avoid these kinds of relationships like the plague. They aren't usually that expensive but the potential hassle sours the whole deal.
ridgered4··on The FTC wants to ban tough-to-cancel subscriptions
Can you just change your billing address to an arbitrary location like that? CC payments require matching address at least, or zip code. I guess if you weren't receiving any mail from the entity it might not matter in practice but it seems odd.
ridgered4··on Hyundai promises to keep buttons in cars
I'm not sure if this is even possible on my car. Is there a hardware module I can remove?
