rick_2047··on Ask HN: Hacking in real life - what do you create?
That is something I have tried, but no I don't have time for that. I catch a college bus with 1 and half hour ride (one way) at 8am and usually hack till 2am so I cannot just wake up at 6:30 to do some running even for half an hour. I come back at 6pm so that does not leave much room either.

Actually that is the whole problem, I don't have time for doing something offline.

rick_2047··on Ask HN: Hacking in real life - what do you create?
Ok people I have to face the music. I just cannot sit on the computer forever! I need suggestions for a off line hobby. I am 19 and I don't have anything apart from my computer life under my belt. I did some theatre and drama, at my last year of high school I wrote, directed, produced and acted the annual day play which was heavily applauded. But after that, nothing. I cannot continue theatre as there is no easy way to go about it, no clubs or culture in my city.

So what would be some hobby offline, something which takes me far away from my computer and the Internet. I think I can pick something up from this thread.

rick_2047··on Ask HN: Daddy, what's "tax"?
In short, They cannot just print infinite number of notes
rick_2047··on Ask HN: How HN improved your life?

rick_2047··on Offer HN: Free Proofreading and/or Editing
1) He said he is testing a market.

2) I think you do not get the concept of Offer HN.

rick_2047··on Ask HN: Daddy, what's "tax"?
I know most of the people here did not take this seriously, but in an ideal world this is how taxes would work (I am no economist so take this with a grain of salt, this is what I think should happen).

"Government needs money to run. They have to develop infrastructures and pay salary of public servants. Also they have to provide welfare to under privileged and subsidies to student communities and such. They cannot just print infinite number of notes so they have to take money from the current cash flow. The cash flow here means things like purchases, salaries, revenue, real estate etc. Now, to do that they have to decide how much to take from whom. They cannot take a fix amount as not every mode of cashflow would be viable with that fix amount. So they decide how much to pull from where. Thus on income we have income tax. But that too is not fixed. You pay depending upon the size of your income and nothing else. Thus ideally, the rich pay more and poor pay less. On the other hand, you have things like sales tax, where the government takes a fixed percentage of all the sales made by a company.

In short the government takes some amount of your money each time you make a transaction... well most of the times. But rest assured, your money comes back to you. The government gives it back in terms of infrastructure or services or carnivals or social security or things like that."

I know this is not perfect, nor is it what happens in the real world. But this is what should happen I think.

rick_2047··on Ask HN: Are any of you at X where X is some college?
This is a long shot, where long → ∞. But I am at Ganpat University, Mehesana, India. I am in the engineering college (formally UVPCE) anyone from there or any of the Ahmedabad college? Would love to meet.
rick_2047··on .42: new experimental, all numeric top-level domain
O fish, I totally missed that(I am not geek enough I guess). They should include that in the FAQ.
rick_2047··on .42: new experimental, all numeric top-level domain
Why 42. Most of the early would be hackers and geeks and a prime number would seem way better.
rick_2047··on Ask HN: I dropped out. How do I continue my CompSci education?
This alone will put you in the top half of the programming community with regards to knowledge and overall understanding.

Really? Is the bottom half really that dumb? Or people just choose to ignore things which are not immediately of there need. I completed that book and though it was a great read, I wouldn't say I know much more than a person who has a CS degree.

rick_2047··on Using Maxima Output in Octave
I was just wondering if there is a MATLAB compatible library for Control Toolkit in octave so I can use the code I write at school for learning at home.
rick_2047··on Google algorithm change launched
Ironically, now this post ranks at number 1 for the query. World works in a strange way it seems.
rick_2047··on Rethinking 99 weeks of unemployment
I live in a country with no such guarantee and people have managed to live.
rick_2047··on Rethinking 99 weeks of unemployment
Really, 99 weeks is just too much. If you cannot get rehired in a year or so, do you really think you will get hired at all? If you were good enough or lucky enough you would get a job in 1 year or else you seriously need to rethink your "career"
rick_2047··on The wrong kind of sharing: Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page hacked
If facebook was a public company, zuck would have seen the stocks go through the roof about now.
rick_2047··on Ask HN: What would you do if you couldn't use a computer ever again?
Considering that most of the world is run through computers and you cannot use computers, how do you plan to do this?
rick_2047··on Apple.com gets a redesign
I agree with that. I have seen apple.com a few times when I want to drool and this seems strikingly similar. But one thing is, when you have such a minimalistic design, the change in menu bar is a major change.
rick_2047··on Ask HN:Is there a dedicated hacker icon?
Even the hotlink is down now.
rick_2047··on Pirate Bay working on a mysterious new site
Wouldn't it be funny if this was just a large bag of nothing? I mean, there will be all the fearing in record executives and all the press and all that and they just upload one lousy image or better yet a propaganda?
rick_2047··on [dead]
Who said anything about your karma? I never look at anyone's karma before judging. What you wrote was crap and go downvoted. Thats all there is to it.
rick_2047··on [dead]
sure! you find it useful. But why? If you would have explained all this instead of saying "Great Group!", you wouldn't have been downvoted.

You see, on HN we try to explain what we are saying and don't take much on face value. Also a two word comment is usually replaced by an upvote.

rick_2047··on Ask HN: Tips on research paper presentation at a technical conference.
I am in the middle of making the slides (I know, I know I am very late but the speech is almost ready I am reworking the slides in beamer as I suck with power point). Maybe I will email them to you and you can look at it? See if they are too elaborate?
rick_2047··on [dead]
Because they are not telling why this is a great group. There must be some basis on which there comments rest. If they cannot express that, better just upvote the story.
rick_2047··on [dead]
Why should we judge?

When you submit something to HN, it is judged, no matter what. HN people are analytical and like to break things and analyse the system.

rick_2047··on [dead]
While agree fully with your point that we should not judge things by the medium they are using, I cannot fail to see how most of the comments violate the guidelines of HN (take my comments with a grain of salt, I used google translate to look at ~10 conversations).

1) There is no karma system so there is no ranking based on quality. You can say that the number of likes can be considered as karma, but that does not rank comments or links.

2) Though people there can be considered civil, not all of the comments are particularly interesting. I come to HN as 80% of the conversations make me go "OMG, I never thought of it that way". That didn't happen here. But again I just looked at a small sample.

3) I don't care how many members you have, you may have 10 or 10,000 the question is, how many of them are actively contributing at least mediocre quality content. Judging by the profile pics I see, it cannot by more than 40 and that too is a conservative count.

rick_2047··on Ask PG: Would you accept donations towards buying a monster server for HN?
If you didn't know, that does not have some updates that pg makes on the fly. I have been managing hackerstreet.in, which uses that source, and I can tell it is outdated. Please actually see links before you are linking.
rick_2047··on Ask PG: Would you accept donations towards buying a monster server for HN?
but first I have to release a more current version of the code.

Please do that, some people are dying to see some of the stuff that goes under the hood. Of course things like hell banning may not be released, but some of the ranking and "ask" page stuff would be awesome to look into.

rick_2047··on Octave: An Alternative to the High Cost of Matlab
Does it have something like simulink?
rick_2047··on What is a Rockstar Programmer?
On a slightly off topic note, rockstars need a lot of skills to be successful. As you said it isn't only about music (I beg to differ that it does not relate to music at all), but a lot of different stuff. A rockstar has to catch the attention of millions of people and that is a skill which not everyone can master. This actually relates a lot to college professors. You might have noticed that there are some professors which just fail at catching your attention even though they might be expert in there subject while there are some which may not be the best in content but just catch attention of a huge student body in a lecture hall.
rick_2047··on For what are the Windows A:\ and B:\ drives used?
Interesting. After the first few thoughts like "This can't be happening I am only 19" and "this guy is either dumb or 6" my next thought was "What would be the question that would make me feel really old when I am in my 50s"?

The effect this question has on people is because they remember some information which most of the users today don't know as they have never used that technology. So what technology of today will become so obsolete that you would remember your age?
