Mandela and Castro are murderers. Why are they even included on your list?
I suppose it's like someone that lives in North Korea: They don't know the freedoms they are missing because they've never had them.
" Summers were usually spent playing a lot of video games and going on boring camping trips with various relatives. At the time I loved the break, but I can hardly remember a summer where something really interesting and eventful happened."
Most of my favorite childhood memories happened during summer vacation. The thing is, once you are older..you can't ever re-create that time of complete freedom because you have life responsibilities. I don't want to take that a way from kids.
More money is demanded from the protesters, yet when developers and musicians have a problem with people downloading their hard work without any compensation, the answer is: "you aren't guaranteed a profit".
Well occupiers, now it's my turn to say the same thing when you tell me you have a $50,000 student loan debt and you can't find a job or when you want a government-sanctioned wage increase for not doing anything more.
I feel like people that are successful are being attacked here. I've seen it time and time again with the protesters. They try to silence anyone that even has a hint of success.
The president was a coder and always wanted to work on features that had a strict deadline for our clients. He would give us the code a few days before and we would have to break our backs to fix it.
He also refused to check anything into SVN.
"Stop believing lies and anecdotal evidence and your failed assumptions from living far away from the city itself."
These aren't assumptions. By continuing to deny the problems with Detroit, it will never get better.
This is exactly what has been happening for years. The population continued to deny that Kwame was nothing but a corrupt thug and the city suffered as a result (in crime and people leaving).
"Did you know that downtown Detroit proper has a lower crime rate than basically every other major city in the US?"
Like I said, right downtown is fine. You go even a mile outside the main strip, and it's worse than almost any city in the US. I know, I've been there many times in the last year.
You can't safely live and work in a city like this.
This is why you should partner up with someone with connections, money, or both if you are developer. Otherwise, they will not bring enough to the table.
I lived 10 miles from Detroit for 20+ years. It's not a stereotype, it really is an armpit. Did you know that there are no grocery stores in the city? This is mostly because they got robbed so many times.
Downtown near the casino is probably the only place you can go safely. The problem is that if you venture even a few miles out of your way, it's dangerous. I know at least three people that got carjacked in the past year in Detroit..and all were just returning to their cars in a parking structure.
"Until then, we dont really care to pay a whole lot of credence to what the "Arm Chair Experts" have to say about Detroit and the surrounding area, because they couldn't be more wrong."
I know Detroit and the surrounding area. They aren't wrong. This isn't a recent thing either. Detroit has had rapidly increasing crime rates since the 70s. I wish it was a better city, like Chicago or New York, but it just isn't. It's sad.
Aside from the liberal government doing things like cutting 20% of the police force and investing in a $500,000 art installation, Ann Arbor isn't a bad city for your startup.
over half are from the Ann Arbor area and a few are in California (and other states) with a few remote offices in Ann Arbor.
They really should be pushing for Ann Arbor to be a tech center, not Detroit.
Not really, because clipping coupons won't ever make you enough to retire.
I already looked. $3000 deductible, no lifetime limits, and it covers major surgery, doctor visits are $40. If you want prescription coverage, there are plans less than $200 (in the $190 range) that cover 80% of prescriptions.
Cable costs this much. I'm not saying this guy should pay for this, but many people that claim they will go bankrupt can easily get a plan like this and not.
Entitlement is entitlement. Your argument is that of a child: he's doing something wrong, so I am too. Why can't they be above it?
"If you're a tax payer, you're entitled to good government. You're entitled to be treated fairly and equitably. You shouldn't be short changed just because you're only middle class."
You're right. I wish my taxes were lower for me. Maybe I should go protest?
My problem with the whole thing is the level of entitlement that everyone seems to have.
I started seeing it a few years ago with the downloading of movies, software, advertising (just look at the adblock community) and games online. When questioned, many people say that nobody deserves a living (I've even seen it here on HN). This level of entitlement has now moved onto: a job, a college education, health care, and a home.
"He appears to have no empathy for people who lost everything by doing the safe thing: buying a house, working a job, and living the dream."
How is buying a house the safe thing? A house is an investment and there is risk associated with all investments. If you aren't willing to take those risks, you shouldn't buy a house. Renting is still a viable option.
"Wall Street getting a bailout while average people are told it's unpatriotic and un-American to ask for help"
So two wrongs make a right? By wanting help you are just legitimizing the bailouts.
