richwater··on Our approach to EU text provenance rules
Just make the models worse for the EU. Don't accept this nonsense that's holdingg back actual work and progress.
richwater··on Redditor buys used CPU, turns out it was banned on Valorant and they are SoL
Then don't download the game. Or run linux and skip the ability to run any online games. I don't know what to tell you.
richwater··on Redditor buys used CPU, turns out it was banned on Valorant and they are SoL
Everyone here is talking about how games shouldn't have the ability to do this while not understanding that without it, most online games (PVP specifically) turn into a cheaters paradise and ruin it for all paying customers.

Riot Vanguard has all but eliminated cheaters in Valorant (sporadic instances and DMA hardware can still be used), but the vast (99.9+%) of games are clean because of what they did. Customers place serious value in that.

richwater··on The new Firefox design is here
It's edge case, but I think it's an example of how Firefox is not keeping up with demand for more functionality. Firefox is slowly becoming obselete and Mozilla won't acknowledge it.
richwater··on The new Firefox design is here
Firefox needs to start adding actual embedded functionality improvements rather than constantly tweaking the UX. Chrome's integration with Googgle Pay for example (which lets you generate virtual card numbers on the fly) is what allowed Capital One to replace their browser agnostic extension. Now I cannot use Capital One virtual card number generator in my checkout workflow if I don't move to Chrome.

DynamoDB is really a fantastic product for the 99% percentile of workloads that need a particular kind of super low latency read operation at large scale.

The simplicity of using it and the lack of operations is really why most people tend to reach for it over a relational option, although over the years the burden of managing an RDMS has consistently gone down.

Alluding to sexual assault as a punishment is disgusting.
richwater··on I'm being cyberattacked by Tesla, Inc
I would assume the fastest way to actually make this stop would be to setup a bunch of honeypot exploits, trigger their detection and someone will figure out what they did wrong.

Other than not, with these huge companies you have 0 recourse.

How many of those 20 year old projects had to go through an architecture change that the manufacturer no longs supports? Come on man be reasonable.

richwater··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
This doesn't stop our politicians from completely ignoring the 2nd amendment so whats the difference
richwater··on France reaches 94.9% fiber coverage in 2026
State sanctioned and encouraged anti trust behavior will do that

Why do you support a nanny state that tells adults what content they are allowed to consume?

What business model do MIT licensed projects even have? If you want to offer support contracts and actually make people use them, don't use MIT. You can't have you cake (accepting public contributions and free labor) and eat it (sole profiteering) too.

There is already a healthcare program run by the US government and it's called Veteran Affairs. Veterans can't even access the care they need resulting in almost twice the risk of suicide.

I'll pass on mandated, outlaw-private-insurance government healthcare, thanks.

> which multi-model switching doesn't increase

Given model A with cache C(a) and model B with C(b)

Isn't this not true because the moment you switch models from A to B, you need to provide C(b) the latest conversation diff since C(b) last updated, say many turns ago?

richwater··on FlightAware Sues Kalshi over Flight Cancellation Prediction Markets
Absolute degenerates betting on anything they can.

This will go down as a societal scourge worse than smoking

richwater··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
Why are we applauding under-funding the public pension system for temporary TikTok points? If that's folks' definition of bare minimum the city is in for a lot of pain.
richwater··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
Anyone can balance a budget by just delaying pension contributions. It's not impressive.

What happens next year?

richwater··on How Golden Is Silence, Actually?
As we continue to devolve into a lower and lower trust society, the problem will get worse.

If people want to live in a shoebox surrounded by thousands of other people in a shoebox, I wont stop them but I"m not going to normalize it either.

Thank you for the response. Good luck on your endeavor!
richwater··on GitHub Actions and Pages are experiencing degraded availability
Gotta wonder what they're up to over there.

Is the AI slop that bad? Culture change?

These switches remind me of the butterfly switches on previous generations of Macbooks....not a great memory
richwater··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
I think most people on this board would agree with the thesis. However the real problem is when the owner of the restaurant looks at profit and loss statements and decides to keep less chefs on the payroll because customers are willing to pay for (just) edible steak.

The reduced expectations of steak, the desire for the perfect steak, are all fading to the background because "just passing satisfactorily" is better for business.

richwater··on US beef prices have soared but farmers aren't making more money
The article specifically talks about how some of those huge meatpacking companies are losing money on cattle. I don't think it's them to blame in totality here.
richwater··on Beating GPT-5.6 Sol on retrieval with 100x cheaper open models
Thanks! I think those could all be good heuristics.
richwater··on Beating GPT-5.6 Sol on retrieval with 100x cheaper open models
One thing that plagues [insert current FAANG] is the large amount of corpus knowledge that is outdated/misleading or just plain wrong. I'm curious how this addresses that if it's deriving the reward function from the corpus itself.
richwater··on International Revenue Share Fraud (IRSF)
This is quite the claim (and I'm not saying you are wrong from making it).

I just would have expected some of these institutions to be better.
